The Perfect Distraction
***Milena***
"Think, Milena, think." I muttered the frantic words under my breath, chewing relentlessly on the edge of my thumbnail as I paced the sprawling expanse of the master bedroom.
The suffocating silence of the morning did nothing to quell the anxious storm brewing in my chest. Sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting long shadows across the polished hardwood floor, but my focus remained locked on a single, desperate objective. I needed a viable way to swipe that silver key pendant from Rafael’s neck. The window of opportunity was shrinking by the second, slipping through my fingers like grains of sand. He would be leaving for the syndicate office soon, heading out to manage his dark empire. Once he stepped out of this house, my only chance to uncover the dangerous secrets hidden behind that locked door would vanish with him. My mind aggressively racked through every possible scenario, discarding each flawed plan as quickly as it formed. Stealing from a mafia boss was practically a death wish, but I was out of options. I had to act, and I had to act fast.
The faint sound of heavy, measured footsteps echoed from the distant hallway, steadily growing louder. I froze in the middle of the room, my pulse hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Rafael was approaching. I could hear the low, commanding timber of his voice mingling with Alessio’s softer, agreeable tones as they parted ways outside the study. Panic flared hot and sharp in my chest. I hurriedly spun around, my frantic gaze darting across the pristine bedroom in search of a distraction. An anchor. A weapon. Anything to buy me just a few precious seconds of close proximity.
My eyes landed on the silver breakfast tray resting upon the dresser. A half-empty glass of cold orange juice sat neglected next to a folded linen napkin. Without a second thought, I hatched a desperate, reckless plan. I rushed over and grabbed the damp glass, the condensation chilling my trembling fingers. I positioned myself just behind the doorframe, leaning close to the thick wood, tracking the steady rhythm of his approaching gait. *One. Two. Three.*
I took a sharp breath to steady my racing heart, stepped out from my hiding spot, and deliberately collided with his solid frame. The impact jarred my shoulder. The cold juice erupted from the rim of the glass, flying through the air in a vibrant arc before splashing in a messy spread over his crisp white shirt and expensive navy suit jacket. The sticky liquid soaked instantly into the pristine fabric, leaving a glaring, ruined mess across his broad chest. The glass slipped from my grip, thudding softly against the thick carpet.
"Oh my God! I am so sorry, Rafael. I can be such a klutz sometimes." I gasped loudly, letting my mouth fall open in exaggerated mock horror.
I widened my eyes, staring at the spreading orange stain as if I had just committed an unforgivable sin against his wardrobe. Rafael tipped his head down slowly. His jaw clenched tight as he assessed the sticky ruin of his tailored clothing. When his dark gaze snapped back up to meet mine, his expression was a terrifying mix of shock and a deep, intimidating scowl that could have frozen water.
"Do you just walk around with your eyes at the back of your head?" he scolded strictly, his voice a dangerous, gravelly low tone that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Let me help you with that." I feigned playful innocence, forcing my trembling hand to reach out toward his chest.
This was my moment. Under the guise of wiping away the spilled drink, I aimed my fingers directly for the hollow of his collarbone, desperate to feel the cold metal of the key hidden beneath his damp collar. He stepped back swiftly before my fingertips could even brush the wet fabric. He swatted my hand away with a rigid brush of his arm, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"I cannot deal with this right now. Not with a highly important syndicate meeting looming in twenty minutes." His tone left zero room for argument.
He stalked past me, radiating intense irritation, and headed straight for the far side of the massive bed. I turned slowly, watching his broad back as he began to dismantle his ruined attire. He yanked off the stained navy suit jacket and tossed it carelessly into the woven laundry basket near the corner. Next came the silk tie, pulled loose with a rough jerk and discarded onto the floor. Finally, his large hands gripped the edges of the sticky white shirt, unbuttoning it with rapid, frustrated movements before peeling the ruined fabric off his shoulders and tossing it aside to join the jacket.
As his bare, sculpted body came fully into view, the breath hitched painfully in my throat. I stood frozen by the doorframe, unable to tear my gaze away from the imposing sight of him. My eyes involuntarily traced the fine, rigid lines of his ripped abs, the deep V-shape tapering down past his waistline. Faint, jagged scars marked his golden skin, telling silent stories of brutal survival in a merciless underworld. His taut, powerful muscles flexed and shifted with every minute movement he made. An unexpected, suffocating heat flushed entirely through my entire body, starting from my chest and spreading rapidly to the tips of my fingers. My pulse accelerated, drumming a chaotic, deafening rhythm in my ears.
My senses warred violently against each other, logic screaming at me to look away while my traitorous biology kept my eyes firmly glued to his chest. I hated this man. I despised everything he stood for and everything he had done to me. Yet, for the very first time, I found myself thoroughly mesmerized. The sheer, overwhelming physical magnetism he possessed slammed into me like a freight train. I was truly seeing him not just as my captor, but as a dangerously, overwhelmingly attractive man.
"Seen something you like yet? Or do I have to take off a little bit more?"
Rafael’s smooth, mocking voice snapped me violently out of my daze. My gaze jerked upward to meet his. A tiny, rare spark of genuine amusement danced in the depths of his dark eyes. He stood tall and unbothered by his half-naked state. His large, calloused hands hovered confidently over his silver belt buckle, his long fingers resting against the cool metal as if waiting for my permission to continue the show.
A deep, searing scarlet flush crept up my neck and stained my cheeks. The embarrassment of being caught blatantly staring fueled a sudden spike of adrenaline. I aggressively masked my intense nervousness with a sharp, defensive hostility, crossing my arms tight over my chest to hide my erratic breathing.
"Your little strip tease isn't going to work on me. You’re so not my type." I spat the words out with as much venom as I could muster, desperate to regain my footing.
He merely chuckled. It was a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated across the quiet room, devoid of his usual icy edge. He shook his head slowly and let his hands fall away from the belt buckle, clearly amused by my fierce reaction.
*Focus, Milena.* I fiercely scolded myself, digging my fingernails into my palms to snap my brain back to reality. This was just a biological reaction, a stupid trick of the mind meant to distract me. I needed to remember my actual prize. I snapped my gaze back up to his broad, exposed neck to claim my prize. My heart plummeted straight into my stomach, leaving a hollow, sickening void behind. The silver necklace wasn't there. His collarbone was bare. He always wore it. *Always.*
While Rafael turned his broad back to me and strode toward the massive walk-in closet to rummage through his vast collection for a fresh suit, I seized the momentary distraction. I crept swiftly on my tiptoes over to the laundry basket. Dropping to my knees, I frantically patted down his discarded navy jacket. I shoved my hands into the side pockets, the inner breast pockets, feeling nothing but empty lining. I grabbed the ruined white shirt, bunching the sticky fabric in my fists, searching for any solid lump. Nothing. Not a single trace of metal.
A heavy knot of panic tightened in my throat. I quickly concluded he must have taken it off during his earlier meeting with Alessio. He must have left it resting on the mahogany desk in his study. If I hurried, I could slip out, grab it, and be back before he finished dressing. I dropped the stained clothes back into the basket and spun around on my heel, rushing toward the bedroom door.
"Where are you going?"
His sharp, commanding voice cut through the air like a whip, freezing me instantly in my tracks. My boots halted just inches from the threshold. I squeezed my eyes shut for a fraction of a second, forcefully swallowing the rising tide of panic threatening to choke me. I plastered a tight-lipped, fake smile onto my face and turned slowly back around. He was standing near the edge of the closet, fully dressed in a fresh pair of dark trousers and a crisp shirt.
"Nowhere." I replied softly, striving to keep my tone light and unbothered.
His intense gaze lingered on my face for a long, agonizing moment. His expression remained a blank wall that gave nothing away. Finally, he turned his attention away from me. He strode confidently across the plush carpet, heading straight for the hidden bedside safe concealed behind a sleek wooden panel. He crouched slightly, his long fingers flying across the digital keypad. He inputted the passcode rapidly, the sequence a blur of motion. The heavy steel door clicked open. He reached inside the dark cavity and pulled out a thick, bound document.
Then, dipping a free hand casually into his tailored pants pocket, he drew out a long silver chain. The very key pendant I had just spent the last ten minutes desperately searching for dangled from his fingers, glinting mockingly under the soft ambient light of the bedroom.
My eyes bulged entirely out of my head. The breath rushed out of my lungs in a stunned rush. The realization that he had kept it safely tucked away in his pocket the entire time hit me like a physical blow.
"Shit." I mumbled a harsh curse under my breath, my hands balling into tight fists at my sides.
He didn't acknowledge my muttering. He deliberately placed the silver necklace inside the steel safe, resting it securely atop a stack of files. He pushed the heavy metal door shut, locking it tight with a loud, final beep that echoed through the silent room. Without casting another glance in my direction, he tucked the thick document under his arm and headed straight for the door, his heavy footsteps receding down the hallway.
Once I was alone, the heavy silence settled over me. I grabbed a fistful of my own hair, pushing the strands back in sheer, unadulterated frustration.
"Fuck." I breathed heavily into the empty room, the single syllable thick with defeat. I was close. So damn close.
