The Price of Salvation

***Milena***

"I'll repay whatever he owes, and you release the girl to me."

Rafael Valenti delivered the demand with cold authority. His dark eyes remained fixed on the ringleader. The men holding me shifted their weight, their boots scraping against the cracked concrete. The rigid tension in their grip betrayed their fear. They faltered under the suffocating presence of the Wraith.

"Your boss, Gaspare, is a good friend of mine. I'm sure he wouldn't mind." Rafael added. His tone held a razor-sharp edge that left no room for debate.

The goons exchanged nervous glances. Their ringleader swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. He puffed out his chest and forced a greedy smirk to mask his intimidation.

"I don't know about that, Mr. Valenti." The ringleader tapped his chin in mock contemplation. "Our overseas Chinese buyers have already placed their bids. They'll offer more than a hundred and seventy thousand euros for a pretty thing like her."

"Four hundred thousand euros."

Rafael cut him off without missing a single beat. The exorbitant number hung in the damp air.

My jaw dropped. A jolt of pure shock traveled up my spine. My mind short-circuited. Four hundred thousand. It was a fortune. An unimaginable pile of blood money for a life I considered worthless just moments ago.

I dragged my gaze away from Rafael and caught sight of Silvano. My brother stood a few feet away, nursing his bruised face. A sickening, opportunistic grin stretched across his bloodied lips. His eyes gleamed with raw greed. Even with death looming over us, all he saw was a massive payday. He couldn't hide his putrid nature.

"You've got yourself a deal, signore." The ringleader broke the silence. His arrogant facade melted into a wide, toothy smile.

Rafael offered a curt gesture to the towering bodyguard standing over his shoulder. The man gave a slight nod, pivoted on his heel, and vanished into the shadows of the street. The wait stretched out, agonizing and thick. I could hear my own heart hammering against my ribs. Minutes later, the bodyguard returned carrying two sleek aluminum briefcases.

He approached his boss and handed them over. Rafael took the heavy cases, stepped forward, and dropped them at the ringleader's feet.

The thug dropped to a crouch and popped the latches. The briefcases sprang open to reveal neat, bundled stacks of crisp euros. A low whistle escaped his lips. He ran a dirty thumb over the cash, his greedy eyes shining in the dim light. He snapped the cases shut and stood back up, nodding to the men restraining me.

Their rough hands released my arms. I stumbled forward a step, rubbing the sore spots where their fingers had dug into my skin. The goons fell into line behind their boss. Without another word, the crew melted away into the darkness. I was left behind with my pathetic brother, Rafael Valenti, and his wall of silent enforcers.

I exhaled a shaky breath. The suffocating terror of being trafficked began to ebb, replaced by a profound relief. There had been no bloodbath. No gunfire. The Wraith had bought my freedom with pocket change.

I turned my attention to the imposing man in the tailored gray suit. I took a hesitant step forward, keeping a safe distance from his terrifying guards. I needed to express my gratitude. Regardless of the horrific rumors surrounding him, he had pulled me out of hell.

I swallowed the lingering lump of fear in my throat and looked him in the eye.

"Grazie. I don't know how to thank you for stepping in. How could I ever repay your kindness?" I kept my voice low, measuring each word carefully.

Rafael tilted his head. The corner of his mouth curved into a dark, cynical smile. His eyes held zero warmth.

"Kindness? Who said anything about this being free?"

The blood drained from my face. My anxious gaze darted from his mocking expression to Silvano. My brother merely shrugged his shoulders, looking indifferent to the ominous shift in the atmosphere.

Rafael looked past me and addressed his towering bodyguard. "Alessio. Escort them."

"Wait, what?" I gasped, panic flaring back to life.

Alessio closed the distance in three long strides. Two other armed men flanked Silvano, taking firm hold of his arms. My brother didn't flinch. He offered zero resistance, letting the guards haul him toward the waiting vehicles like a compliant prisoner.

Alessio stopped right behind me. He didn't grab me. He extended a massive, gloved hand toward the exit, his posture rigid and uncompromising.

"Hold on! At least tell us where you're taking us!" I pleaded. My voice trembled as my feet moved forward under the crushing weight of their authority.

The suffocating reality of my kidnapping settled in as I sat frozen in the sprawling private study of the Valenti Villa. The estate was a heavily guarded fortress wrapped in opulent luxury. Towering bookshelves lined the dark walls. The scent of aged leather and expensive tobacco lingered in the cool air. I sat rigidly in a plush armchair, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table separating me from my captor.

A thick, formal legal document rested on the gleaming wood surface directly in front of me. The crisp white pages were filled with dense paragraphs and strict clauses.

Silvano sat in the chair next to mine, tapping his foot against the Persian rug.

Directly across from us sat Rafael. He leaned back in his leather executive chair. He brought a lit cigarette to his lips, took a slow drag, and exhaled a plume of gray smoke into the dim room.

I tore my eyes away from the terrifying paperwork and lifted my heavy head to meet his unyielding gaze.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Rafael reached forward and crushed the remaining stub of his cigarette into a crystal ashtray.

"It's written in English. Do you need a translator to help you comprehend better?" he replied, a deep scowl settling on his features.

My fear morphed into a sudden spike of anger. I squared my shoulders.

"I can comprehend just fine. I'm not blind, and I'm not stupid. What I want to know is why you're handing me a marriage contract."

Rafael rested his elbows on the table and steepled his fingers. "It's simple. You're my collateral until your brother pays back every single penny he owes me."

A sharp, incredulous laugh ripped its way out of my throat. It echoed harshly in the quiet room.

"This must be a sick joke."

Silvano let out an exasperated sigh and shifted in his seat. He leaned toward me, his face twisted in annoyance.

"Would you just sign the damn papers already, Milena? It's not that hard. You're safe now, just do what the man says."

The sheer audacity of his words snapped the last thread of my restraint. My simmering fury boiled over into a blinding rage. I snapped my head toward him, glaring at the man who shared my blood.

"You have the nerve to say that to my face after trying to sell off your own sister to clear your drug debt?" I spat the words with pure venom, ignoring the dangerous man sitting across the desk. "You're unbelievable! You must think I'm clinically insane to agree to this ridiculous setup."

"Things worked out for the best, didn't they? You aren't in the hands of those traffickers!" Silvano barked back.

"I refuse to marry a total stranger to fix your pathetic mess! I'm so sick of you all tossing me around like some piece of property. You can burn in hell for all I care, Silvano. This is your problem, and I refuse to be dragged down with you."

The heavy oak doors to the study felt miles away. I wanted to run, to scream, to tear the document into a thousand tiny shreds. I would never tether my life to a mafia boss because of a degenerate addict who couldn't keep his life together.

"Enough."

The single word left Rafael's lips like a low, silencing rumble. It commanded the room, snuffing out our bitter argument in a heartbeat. The temperature in the study seemed to plummet. He fixed his grim, icy stare on me.

"You've already been dragged into this," Rafael stated, his voice devoid of any empathy. "I paid for your life. I don't give a damn about your petty family issues. I'm a business man, not a fucking philanthropist."

I gripped the armrests of my chair, my knuckles turning white. I glared right back at him, fueled by desperation.

"You stepped in on your own! You offered to help without anyone asking! Besides, he's the one who created this massive debt. Why do I have to suffer for it by marrying you?"

Rafael rose from his seat. He towered over the mahogany desk, his broad shoulders casting a long, intimidating shadow across the room.

"Let's just say this is my way of ensuring you two won't be able to run off without paying up."

I reached out and picked up the heavy document. The weight of the paper felt like a shackle. I tossed it back onto the polished wood with a loud slap.

"You're wasting your time with this marriage contract. It won't amount to anything." I pointed an accusatory finger at my brother. "Just look at him! He's a con artist. A degenerate addict. This is the man you want me to entrust my life with? He'll never be able to repay four hundred thousand euros for the rest of his miserable, pathetic life!"

"Shut up, Milena!" Silvano growled, his face flushing dark red with humiliation.

I ignored him. My chest heaved as I stared down the deadliest man in the city. My vision began to blur as unshed tears of pure frustration pricked my eyes.

"You might as well just hand me back to those goons and let me die in the streets. I'd rather die than go through with this sick madness."

Rafael's expression didn't change. He looked at me with cold, calculating detachment.

"That wouldn't be such a bad idea."

The words left his mouth with casual ease. In a terrifying blur of motion, he reached inside his tailored jacket. Before my exhausted mind could even register the threat, he pulled out a sleek, black pistol. He raised his arm, aiming the steel barrel at us.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I sucked in a sharp breath and held it, paralyzed by pure terror. The oxygen trapped in my lungs burned, but I refused to move a single muscle. Next to me, Silvano threw his hands up in the air, his eyes bulging out of his skull in a comical display of horror. He pressed himself deep into the chair.

I kept my eyes locked on Rafael. I refused to flinch, even as my throat closed up and I teetered on the verge of choking on my own fear.

Rafael maintained his aim. His thumb brushed against the side of the weapon.

The echoing sound of the safety flicking off bounced off the walls of the quiet study. It was the loudest sound I had ever heard.

"Let's try this one more time, shall we?" Rafael remarked, his tone conversational yet dangerous. "Who's going to sign first?"

Silvano lunged forward. He snatched the heavy gold pen resting next to the document. His hands shook as he scribbled his signature onto the line marked for the debtor. He didn't bother reading a single word. As soon as he finished, he grabbed my wrist, forcing my hand toward the paper and attempting to jam the pen into my palm.

I wrenched my hand free with pure disgust, leaving a tiny smear of black ink across the pristine page.

I glared at Rafael through gritted teeth. My lower lip quivered. The tears I had been fighting to hold back breached my defenses, spilling hot and fast down my cheeks. Deep down, the devastating reality crushed my false hope. There was no escaping a loaded gun. There was no walking out of this room unless he permitted it.

I reached out and took the gold pen. The cold metal felt heavy in my trembling fingers. I leaned over the mahogany desk. My chest ached with every shallow breath. I dragged the pen across the dotted line, spelling out my name. My tears dropped onto the crisp pages, leaving wet, salty patches over the ink as I signed away my life, my future, and my freedom.

I dropped the pen. It rolled across the table and bumped against the ashtray.

Rafael tucked the pistol back into his suit jacket. He reached forward and snatched the document.

"The marriage contract will remain valid until the repayment of every cent. Once your due is paid, our marriage will be annulled."

He stated the terms with formal, business-like precision as he scrawled his bold signature next to mine. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small red velvet box. He flipped it open, retrieved a heavy diamond ring, and tossed it across the table. It slid to a halt right in front of me.

"Until then, you're now legally my wife."

Without sparing me another glance, Rafael turned and walked out of the room. His footsteps were silent against the thick rug.

Silvano wasted no time. He jumped out of his chair and followed the mafia boss toward the exit. Before stepping through the heavy doors, my brother cast one final remorseless glance in my direction. Then, he disappeared, pulling the door shut behind him with a solid thud.

I was left alone in the sprawling, oppressive study.

The silence of the room crushed down on me. My strength vanished. My knees buckled, and I plunged to the floor. The impact sent a dull shock up my legs, but I hardly felt it. I clutched my aching chest, digging my fingers into my shirt as a raw, unrestrained scream tore its way out of my throat. My body shook. Heavy, unstoppable tears blinded me, leaving me gasping for air on the cold floor as the sheer devastation of my new reality swallowed me whole.
