The Grand Charade
Vivienne’s POV
"Congratulations, Vivienne! You’re so lucky! This is a literal fairytale!"
The shrill voices of the wealthy guests echoed through the extravagant room, bouncing off the crystal chandeliers and gold-leaf ceilings. Every forced cheer, every raised champagne flute, every delighted gasp felt like a rough noose tightening around my neck. I stood beneath the glaring lights of my own engagement party, forced to play the part of the glowing, ecstatic bride-to-be. I nodded compliantly. I offered breathless thanks. I flashed a radiant smile to mask the suffocating dread anchored deep in my chest.
The massive, sparkling ring weighing down my finger was not a symbol of devotion or romance. It was a heavy, physical reminder of the forced secret contract I made with the devil. Every time the diamonds caught the light, my stomach churned.
My mother stepped up close beside me. She did not offer a warm embrace or a proud smile. Instead, her sharp gaze swept over my posture, evaluating my performance with intense, unyielding expectation.
"Smile, Vivienne. Make sure it looks real. The Sokolov family is watching. We must keep up appearances."
I stared straight ahead, holding my crystal champagne glass so tight my knuckles turned a stark white. My mother was always watching. She monitored my every move, relentlessly dragging me through this transactional marriage to Valentin simply because it was expected for our family's survival.
I pasted on another fake, empty smile. I internally hated how rapidly my life had slipped out of my control. I was supposed to be the master of my own fate, but now I was powerless, reduced to a mere pawn pushed across a billionaire's chessboard.
Desperate for a momentary reprieve from the suffocating charade, I slipped away from the loud, clinking crowd. I navigated through the sea of expensive silk dresses and tailored suits until I found a quiet corner near the floral arrangements. I spotted my best friend, Penny. She was the only person in the world who knew the dark truth about this arrangement.
Penny looked at me with wide, worried eyes. She reached out and grabbed my icy hands.
"Vivienne, are you sure this is what you want?"
I let out a harsh, defeated breath and held up my heavy ring, putting the obnoxious diamond on full display between us.
"Whether I want it or not, I have the ring and I have no choice. The ink on the contract is practically dry. The guests are drinking our expensive champagne. I am doing this."
Penny frowned, her brow creasing with deep, genuine concern. She squeezed my fingers.
"This is your life, Viv. It is not just some cold business deal you can walk away from at the end of the day. You do not have to throw yourself to the wolves like this."
I pulled my hand back and wrapped my arms defensively around my waist.
"It is not that simple, Penny. I have to protect my family's legacy. All I can do now is try to survive this for one single year. I just need to get through three hundred and sixty-five days of playing pretend."
A bitter, cynical laugh escaped my lips as I pondered the sheer impossibility of the arrangement. I leaned closer to Penny, dropping my voice to a harsh whisper so the lingering guests would not overhear the scandalous truth.
"I have no idea how the child-making part of our contract is going to work. Valentin and I cannot even stand being in the same room together without wanting to draw blood. The thought of sharing a bed with him makes my skin crawl. We despise each other. It is going to be a living nightmare."
Penny sighed, the raw pity in her expression making my chest ache. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, pulling me into a fierce, grounding hug.
"I am going to be here for you every step of the way. I promise you that."
I relaxed into her embrace, grateful for her unwavering support. For a fleeting second, I felt like I could actually breathe again.
Then my mother's sharp, demanding voice cut through the ambient noise, shattering the fragile peace in an instant.
"Vivienne! Where is your fiancé? We need to cut the engagement cake right this minute. Go and find him. The guests are waiting for the grand spectacle."
I pulled away from Penny with a heavy sigh. I dreaded the task with every fiber of my being. I plastered the fake, glowing smile back onto my face and navigated the sprawling, crowded house. I slipped out of the noisy main hall and walked down a quiet, dimly lit hallway that led to the private quarters. The party music faded into a dull hum the further I walked.
As I approached Valentin’s private study, I noticed the heavy oak door was slightly ajar. A sliver of warm, golden light spilled out onto the polished marble floor.
I pushed the door open and stepped inside, and I instantly regretted it.
Valentin was very busy. He stood in the center of the dark, leather-bound room, his large hands gripping the narrow waist of a woman. His lips were forcefully pressed against Svetlana. They were locked in a deep, heated kiss. Svetlana had been desperately trying to sleep with Valentin since our high school days. She used to brag about catching his eye in the cafeteria, and now, here she was, getting her hands all over my fiancé on the night of our engagement party.
Disgust washed over me in a harsh, nauseating wave. The sheer disrespect of his actions made my blood boil. I stood tall in the doorway and loudly cleared my throat.
Svetlana pulled away from him. She ran a hand through her disheveled blonde hair and looked at me with a smug, knowing smile. She was unapologetic and unashamed. She seemed thrilled to be caught in the act, adjusting her tight dress while maintaining eye contact with me.
Valentin did not look guilty. He did not look embarrassed. He merely raised his dark, thick brows in mild annoyance at my sudden intrusion. He turned his head and looked down at his former high school groupie.
"I will see you later."
He muttered the indifferent dismissal without a second thought, giving her backside a firm slap.
Svetlana giggled, winking at him before she strutted proudly past me and out of the study, her expensive heels clicking against the hardwood floor.
I stood in the center of the room, my hands curling into tight fists. My entire body seethed with white-hot anger. The audacity of this man was staggering. I didn't expect fidelity or romance from a man I hated with every ounce of my soul. But to bring this woman into his private study, to hook up with her right under the noses of our engagement party guests? It was a blatant, humiliating display of disrespect.
I glared at him, letting my fake smile drop to reveal the pure venom underneath.
"What the hell do you think you are doing on our engagement night?"
Valentin stood his ground. Without an ounce of remorse or guilt, he adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket. His icy eyes were cold, and the darkness in his gaze sent a sharp chill straight down my spine. He stalked toward me, his tall, imposing frame swallowing the distance between us in three long strides.
"There is no part of our secret arrangement that dictates I cannot do what I want. You do not own me, Vivienne. I suggest you do the same."
He delivered the flat, ruthless statement without a single shift in his tone. The mocking challenge hung heavy in the tense air between us, suffocating and cruel. Before I could formulate a stinging retort, he stepped forward. He brushed right past me, intentionally letting his broad, muscular shoulder solidly hit mine. The forceful impact knocked me off balance, forcing me to take a staggered, clumsy step back.
His steady footsteps echoed down the empty hallway as he walked away, returning to the grand party as if nothing had happened.
I was left standing alone in his quiet study. I pressed my hand against my throbbing shoulder, seething with blind, helpless rage. The lingering scent of Svetlana's perfume mixed with his expensive, woodsy cologne.
I stared at the empty doorway, my chest heaving with ragged breaths as a storm of questions battered my mind. Is this truly the man I am supposed to marry? Can I possibly survive a full, agonizing year without trying to strangle Valentin Sokolov in his sleep?
I was not sure of anything anymore. The glittering world outside these walls felt like a dangerous, shifting blur. But as the heavy silence of the study settled around me, one terrifying truth remained crystal clear. I was trapped.
