The Brutal Truth

The heavy doors of the Sterling estate swung open, revealing the suffocatingly familiar foyer.

Valerie, Marcus’s second wife, had lost her biological daughter years ago before adopting Maya. Three years after Declan's own mother passed away, Marcus formally brought Valerie into the household. From the very moment she arrived, she had utterly despised me, treating me like an unwanted intruder in my own home solely because of Maya's presence.

"Dad, Mom," Maya called out as we entered, her voice dripping with manufactured sweetness.

Marcus’s stern gaze snapped instantly to Declan. "You ungrateful fool, so you finally decided to show your face," he roared, his harsh voice echoing loudly off the polished marble floor. "You've embarrassed the Sterlings beyond repair!"

Just yesterday, right as Declan and I were standing at the altar preparing to exchange rings, Maya had called claiming severe chest pains. Declan bolted from the venue without a single backward glance, leaving me standing alone in my gown as the city's newest spectacle of ridicule.

Maya immediately rushed up to Marcus, her large eyes shining with well-timed tears. "Dad, this is entirely my fault," she cried softly. "I genuinely thought my heart was giving out and I panicked and called Declan. I never intended for things to end up like this."

She grabbed his sleeve, looking up at him pitifully. "If you need someone to punish, please just blame me. Don't be mad at him."

Valerie stepped forward and gathered Maya fiercely into her arms. "Maya only suffers from this fragile heart condition because Serena maliciously shoved her into the freezing water all those years ago!"

She shot a bitter glare across the room. "Besides, the in-laws haven't even raised a complaint yet. Why are you making such a fuss? Maya, sweetheart, it's alright. None of this is your fault."

This exact scene had played out on repeat over the past two years. Whenever Maya and I clashed, Marcus would make a brief fuss but ultimately let it go. In the end, Maya always walked away with the apologies and advantages, leaving me with nothing but bitter isolation.

Declan scanned the massive living room, clearly not finding who he was looking for. "Dad, where's Serena?" he asked.

"How dare you even mention her!" Marcus erupted, his aging face flushing a dangerous crimson. "Yesterday, you abandoned her at the altar to face all the humiliation alone. She stayed behind, managed the furious guests, claimed she was going to change out of her gown, and then completely vanished."

Marcus pointed a trembling finger at him. "She protected the Sterling family's reputation, while you ruthlessly dragged her dignity through the mud!"

The arrogant, unbothered confidence finally slipped from Declan's features. "You say she hasn't come back? But where could she have gone? She sent me her location last night!"

He pulled out his phone, his long fingers going rigid against the illuminated screen. "The police called me today saying they found Serena's wedding dress at Crystal Coast..."

A hollow laugh escaped my ghostly lips. It took him this incredibly long to realize I was dead?

"Where did she go? How should I know!" Marcus yelled back. "Did you spare a single thought for her when you ran away from the wedding? Now, what are you pretending for?"

"Dad, I'm going out," Declan declared abruptly, turning on his heel.

"Declan, I'm coming with you," Maya insisted, quickly matching his pace.

Watching his broad, visibly panicked back hurry out the door, I found the entire display morbidly amusing. Wasn't it a bit too late to be playing the concerned husband now?

Inside the sterile, brightly lit police station, Declan marched aggressively up to the front desk and cut straight to the point. "Officer, what exactly happened?"

"Mr. Sterling," Sheriff Victor Adler began, his voice an even, practiced monotone. "This morning, a wedding dress was spotted drifting on the river. A jogger thought it was a body and reported it. After retrieving the garment, we confirmed it was the exact high-end dress your wife wore at the ceremony."

Maya immediately stepped in, cutting the officer off. "Was there anything else found besides the wedding dress?"

"No," the sheriff replied, glancing briefly at her.

"Officer, Serena wouldn't have thrown her own wedding dress into the water just to upset you, would she?" Maya asked, directing the manipulative question pointedly at Declan.

She then turned her innocent gaze back to Victor. "Serena often plays these kinds of dramatic games, but we really don't have the time to indulge her right now."

Sheriff Adler raised a thick eyebrow at her completely nonchalant attitude regarding a missing person. "And who might you be?"

"I'm Serena's younger sister," Maya answered smoothly. "Serena has always been a manipulative liar. When I was only five years old, she lured me out of the house and shoved me straight into the river, trying to kill me."

She sighed, perfectly playing the tragic martyr. "Even after I miraculously survived and made it back, she never stopped plotting against me. She's an absolute expert at playing the victim to control everyone else."

Hearing those venomous accusations spoken directly to law enforcement, my invisible form vibrated with absolute fury. I desperately wanted to materialize, to defend myself and scream that I hadn't done any of that. I had repeated the truth numerous times throughout my tragic life, but my family always viewed Maya as the perpetual victim. My desperate protests only ever sounded like mere excuses.

I fervently hoped Victor might be the one to see through her blatant lies, but his rugged expression remained completely impassive.

"We discovered heavy traces of blood soaked deep into the wedding dress," Victor stated plainly, his authoritative voice cutting cleanly through the thick tension in the room. "After conducting rapid lab tests, we confirmed the sample is a perfect match for Ms. Serena's DNA. There are also two deep puncture marks on the fabric, highly likely resulting from a sharp blade."

He held Declan's gaze firmly. "If Ms. Vance was wearing this garment at the time of the incident, she would have sustained severe penetrating injuries to both her abdomen and her back."

Victor delivered the definitive blow. "Therefore, we strongly suspect she has been violently attacked."

Declan's handsome face instantly drained of all healthy color, turning a sickly ashen gray. His large hand, which was casually gripping a small disposable paper cup of water, began to shake violently and uncontrollably. The flimsy paper crumpled loudly under his sudden, terrified grip, causing the cold water to spill forcefully over the edges and pool rapidly all across the metal interrogation table as the horrifying reality finally set in.
