The Alpha Stepbrother

POV Cleo.

My frozen fingers grip the rough nylon straps of my heavy duffel bag. I tip my head back, staring up at the towering, opulent wrought-iron gates of the Maple Ridge estate. The biting autumn wind whips my wild red curls across my face, but I do not blink. I force myself to look at the sprawling mansion hidden behind the ancient oak trees. It has been two full years since I last stood on this pavement. Two years since I left my mother’s home to live with my grandmother in a cramped, drafty apartment in the neighboring city. During that time, I ran with the Blaze pack, keeping my head down and focusing on my studies. But now my grandmother is gone, my bank account is drained to the last penny, and I am back at the territory boundary of the Ember pack. Returning here feels like walking straight into a steel trap, but I have no other choice.

"You can do this. You have to do this." I whisper the desperate words into the frigid wind, desperately trying to build the courage to walk inside.

I am broke. I have nothing left to my name except the clothes on my back and an acceptance letter to a prestigious local college. That early acceptance cost me every dime of my meager savings. Living in the human dormitories on campus is a dangerous, foolish gamble for a shifter. We need the woods. We need the space to let our wolves run free under the full moon. If I stay in a tiny human dorm, the risk of blowing my cover during a midnight shift is far too great. This grand estate, with its sprawling private acres of dense forest, is the perfect sanctuary for my college years. It is the only logical place for me to live.

My mother lives here because she recently married Arthur Vance. Arthur is a wealthy, powerful Lycan from the Ember pack. When they first announced their union, every single member of the pack was sent into a state of deep shock. Werewolves and Lycans rarely mix in romantic relationships. The biological differences are just too vast. Werewolves, like my mother and me, shift into large four-legged wolves. We are bound by lunar cycles and pack bonds. Lycans are a different breed altogether. They are monstrous, bipedal beasts of myth, towering over us even in their human forms. They possess raw, untamed strength and a primal dominance that makes ordinary werewolves submit on instinct.

Despite the shocking nature of their marriage, I actually have no problem with Arthur. He is a gentle, accommodating man who treats my mother with respect. He provided this luxurious estate and offered me a room without a second thought. The mansion itself is a fortress of wealth and security.

However, there is a massive, terrifying flaw in this plan. His son.

Dorian Vance.

Just thinking his name makes my stomach churn, sending a bitter wave of nausea up my throat. Dorian is the devil incarnate. Back when I still lived here in Maple Ridge, he was my relentless bully. He was the popular, untouchable athlete placed on this earth for the sole purpose of destroying my life.

It started with a naive, foolish mistake on my part. At the beginning of middle school, I harbored a deep crush on him. I thought he was the most handsome boy I had ever seen. He played football with a lethal grace that mesmerized the entire school. It baffled me how he could suppress his immense Lycan strength, restraining his raw power just enough to play against human and werewolf teenagers without breaking their bones. He was a prodigy on the field. As his self-proclaimed number one fan, I showed up to every single game. I sat in the cold metal bleachers, cheering until my voice went hoarse, hoping he would look my way.

I was a fan of Dorian, but he was far from a fan of me.

I was a late bloomer, slightly chubbier than the other werewolf girls in my grade. I had round cheeks, a smattering of dark freckles, and a soft build. To a supreme athlete like Dorian, my devotion was nothing more than a pathetic joke. His teammates noticed my constant presence in the stands. They teased him mercilessly, mocking him for having a fat, obsessive fan. I thought he would ignore them. I thought he would see my loyalty.

I was wrong.

I remember the devastating Friday night with crystal clarity. The stadium lights were blazing, casting long shadows over the damp turf. The smell of sweat and freshly cut grass hung heavy in the air. The game had just ended in another crushing victory for Maple Ridge. I stood by the chain-link fence, clutching a plastic bottle of water I had bought for him. Dorian broke away from his celebrating teammates and marched straight toward me. My heart soared into my throat. My naive mind convinced me he was coming to thank me, to finally acknowledge my unwavering support.

He stopped on the other side of the fence, his imposing frame blocking out the stadium lights. He looked down at me, an arrogant, mocking smirk carving a permanent scar into my memory.

"Look, Pug Cleo, I appreciate that you’re a fan, but if you think you have a chance with me, then you’re delusional. I don’t date fat chicks. Please stop watching me on the field. It’s embarrassing seeing you cheer for me." He delivered the cruel words with effortless malice, his voice carrying over the post-game chatter.

His teammates erupted into howling laughter behind him. The sound slammed into my chest like a physical blow. The brutal nickname spread through the school by Monday morning. From that day forward, I was no longer Cleo Fairchild. I was 'Pug Cleo' or 'Toad Cleo'. Dorian weaponized my innocent feelings against me, adopting those degrading nicknames and using them at every conceivable opportunity.

The torment followed me into high school. Maple Ridge High became my personal hell. As we grew older, Dorian underwent a terrifying physical transformation. He shot up several inches, his shoulders broadening into thick slabs of muscle. His awkward teenage phase vanished, leaving behind a flawless, angelic face that masked a rotten core. The girls in the pack began to fawn over him like he was a deity. They giggled whenever he glanced their way, crowding the hallways just to catch a glimpse of him. During pack hunts in the woods, they orbited him like desperate worshippers seeking the blessing of a dark god.

While his popularity skyrocketed, I remained a lonely outcast. I had no friends, and Dorian made sure I never forgot my place at the bottom of the social food chain. He took immense pleasure in publicly humiliating me. He would casually bump into my lunch tray in the cafeteria, spilling cold milk all over my clothes while his friends roared with laughter. He orchestrated cruel pranks that left me scrubbing dirt out of my hair in the girls' bathroom.

The worst incident happened during my freshman year. He managed to steal my private diary from my locker. He stood on a cafeteria table during the busiest lunch hour and read the pages out loud. He read the names of the boys I found attractive, mocking my deepest secrets. Embarrassingly enough, his name was still written in those pages. I still harbored a twisted, lingering crush on him, unable to sever the bond my teenage heart had formed. He read his own name to the crowd, throwing his head back in roaring laughter at the pathetic reality that I still liked him. The memory of that laughter remains a sharp, rusty dagger twisting relentlessly in my gut.

My chest tightens as I stare at the heavy iron gates. My anxiety reaches a boiling point, burning my lungs with every shallow breath. I take a step back, the soles of my worn sneakers scraping against the concrete. I seriously debate simply turning around, abandoning my heavy duffel bag, and fleeing into the woods. I can find a job. I can sleep in an alley. Anything has to be better than willingly walking back into his domain.

Before I can pivot on my heel and run, a deeply unsettling, familiar voice cuts through the howling wind, freezing the blood in my veins.

"Well, hello there, Cleo. I thought I recognized your tiny little self. I just didn’t think you would dare to set foot anywhere close to this estate."

Every single hair on the back of my neck stands on end. An unwelcome, paralyzing wave of fear settles deep into my bones. My inner wolf whimpers, pressing her belly flat against the floor of my mind in instant submission.

I swallow the massive lump in my throat and slowly turn around.

There the devil stands, the source of my worst nightmares. Dorian Vance.

My breath catches in my throat, my eyes widening in sheer panic. I instantly realize he has grown impossibly larger since the last time I saw him. He is no longer just a tall high school athlete. He is a gargantuan titan. He stands at an intimidating 6'8, his massive frame completely eclipsing my small 5'2 stature. He looks like a movie star carved from granite, possessing piercing blue bedroom eyes and a breathtakingly handsome face. Thick cords of Lycan muscle strain against the fabric of his dark designer shirt. His shoulders are as broad as boulders, casting a long, terrifying shadow that swallows me whole.

I force myself to meet his piercing blue gaze, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"I… I need a place to live during my studies." I stammer nervously, hating how small and fragile my voice sounds in the open air.

Dorian glances up at the tall iron gates, an expression of profound boredom settling over his striking features. He treats my presence like a minor, irritating pest.

"Obviously. I just didn’t think you would be brave enough to return to Maple Ridge after I became the Alpha of the Ember pack. You’re brave… or stupid. I can’t decide." He drops the terrifying revelation with a casual, brutal drawl.

My lungs stop working. I stare up at him, my mind scrambling to process the impossible information.

"Y-you’re the Alpha? B-but how? Your dad was the Beta! Gideon Slater was supposed to take over!" I blurt out the frantic words, my terror temporarily overridden by sheer shock.

Dorian rolls his massive shoulders in a nonchalant shrug, though the swelling, arrogant pride radiating from his broad chest is unmistakable.

"I beat Gideon Slater in a duel. He was supposed to become the Alpha, but after seeing him lose so easily, the elders deemed me more fitting to lead. Simple as that. Gideon is my Beta now."

The casual delivery of such brutal violence makes my heart sink like a heavy stone. Lycan duels are notorious for their unrestrained savagery. For Dorian to rip the Alpha title away from the reigning heir, he must have unleashed a level of physical destruction that I cannot even begin to fathom. The terrifying realization washes over me. He is no longer just my cruel stepbrother or the high school bully. He is the supreme ruler of this territory. He holds the power of life and death over every wolf in the Ember pack.

He clearly still relishes the immense power he holds over me. I can sense the dark amusement rolling off his skin in thick, suffocating waves.

"But don’t worry, Cleo. I wouldn’t let my personal issues interfere with the management of my pack." He smirks down at me, the expression identical to the one that haunted the torturous corridors of Maple Ridge High.

My mind reels at his staggering audacity. Personal issues? He tormented me for years while I did nothing but exist in his vicinity, and he has the nerve to frame me as the problem.

"You’re quite the talk of the pack, you know? The genius werewolf who is starting college one year early. You’re only seventeen, aren’t you?" He continues, taking a slow, predatory step closer to me.

"Yes, I am." I reply, a thin thread of irritation managing to seep through my thick layer of terror.

A deep, rumbling chuckle vibrates in his massive chest. "Impressive, Cleo. Very impressive. Too bad brains can’t make up for everything else." He dismisses my hard-earned early college acceptance with a careless wave of his large hand.

"Everything else?" I ask, my voice trembling.

His arrogant smirk widens, his piercing blue eyes dropping down to scan my body with deliberate, cruel intent. He takes his time, stripping away my meager confidence with a single sweeping glance. He is deliberately trying to tear down my self-esteem, returning to his favorite twisted pastime.

"You’re still chubby and quite plain-looking. But don’t worry, I’m sure your future mate is going to be someone from the absolute bottom of the pack. They always end up together." He sneers the words, delivering a venomous taunt designed to shatter my spirit.

A wave of icy numbness washes over my entire body. I stand frozen on the pavement, the brutal insult echoing in my ears. Having delivered his crushing blows, Dorian looks incredibly satisfied with himself. He turns away from me, slapping his massive palm against the electronic keypad mounted on the stone pillar. The heavy wrought-iron gates groan in protest before slowly swinging inward. He turns his broad back and casually strolls onto the estate grounds, intending to leave me standing there like discarded trash.

Hot tears sting the corners of my eyes, blurring my vision. My knuckles turn white as I grip my duffel bag.

Is this my fate? Am I destined to endure a repetition of the agonizing past? Will I spend my college years shrinking against the walls, hiding from this arrogant monster?

Suddenly, the dam breaks. The years of suppressed frustration, the endless nights of crying into my pillow, and the boiling, toxic humiliation finally shatter my control. The numbness vanishes, replaced by a blinding, white-hot rage. Deep inside my chest, my inner wolf stops whimpering. She rises to her paws, baring her sharp teeth in fierce, unrestrained rebellion. I am tired of being his punching bag. I am tired of being Pug Cleo.

I find my voice, drawing a deep breath of the freezing autumn air.

"And I bet you haven’t even found your mate yet! The moon goddess can’t possibly decide on which poor female Lycan should be cursed with the unbearable burden of being mated to an arrogant, self-centered Alpha like you!" I shout the reckless, insulting words directly at his retreating back.

The heavy silence that follows is deafening.

Dorian freezes mid-stride. His broad back goes rigid, his massive shoulders locking into place as if an invisible force has turned him into a stone statue.

Instantly, my throat runs completely dry. The fleeting rush of rebellious adrenaline evaporates, leaving behind a cold, hollow void of pure terror. Terror seizes my chest in a vice grip. I stop breathing. My heart slams against my ribs with bruising force. I just screamed at an Alpha Lycan. I just insulted the most powerful, dangerous predator in the territory. I have effectively signed my own death warrant.

Slowly, agonizingly, Dorian turns around to face me. A twisted, incredibly dangerous smile forms on his handsome lips.

"Did Cleo Fairchild just raise her voice and speak her mind?" He whispers the words, but the low, rumbling sound carries effortlessly across the distance between us.

He closes the distance with terrifying speed. He moves with a lethal, fluid grace that betrays his massive size. In the blink of an eye, he is standing right in front of me. His imposing shadow engulfs me entirely. My 5'2 frame feels ridiculously small beneath his towering height. His steel-like blue eyes burn with an intensity that promises immense violence. He could destroy me with a flick of his wrist. He could crush my skull before I even had the chance to scream.

"Finally found your spine, have you?" He mocks, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrates right through the pavement into the soles of my shoes.

I brace myself for the inevitable pain. I stiffen my spine, clenching my jaw tight, fully expecting him to strike me down with his violent wrath. I wait for the backhand that will send me sprawling across the concrete.

But the blow never comes.

Instead, he raises his large hand toward my face. I flinch, squeezing my eyes shut. His long, rough fingers reach out and gently grip my chin. The touch is shocking. His skin is blazing hot against the freezing autumn air. He applies just enough pressure to physically force my face up, tilting my head back so I have to open my eyes and meet his intense, piercing blue gaze.

I stare up at him, my breath hitching in my throat. His face is mere inches from mine. I can smell the overwhelming scent of his Alpha aura—a heady mix of dark pine, cold rain, and pure, intoxicating danger.

He studies my face with predatory focus. His thumb brushes lightly against my jawline.

"Why do you put foundation over your freckles?" He asks the bizarre, surreal question, his tone devoid of its previous malice.

My panicked brain short-circuits. I stare at him like a goldfish hauled out of the water. My mouth opens and closes, struggling to process the surreal inquiry. Why on earth does he care about my makeup?

"Because." I manage to growl a single, defensive word through my chattering teeth.

Before my mind can analyze the situation further, a genuine, breathtaking smile breaks across his handsome face. The cruel mask slips away, revealing a glimpse of something strange and unfamiliar.

"Such a waste." He purrs the words, the sound vibrating deep in his chest. The previous mockery evaporates from his deep voice, replaced by a smooth, velvety warmth.

He steps a fraction closer, the heat radiating from his massive chest washing over my shivering frame.

"I actually like seeing your freckles. They are pretty, just like your red hair." He softly confesses, his gaze dropping to my lips for a split second before returning to my eyes.

I blink in rapid succession, totally taken aback by the unexpected compliment. There is a lingering seriousness in his voice, a strange sort of affection that he has never directed at me before. My heart stutters in my chest.

He chuckles softly, a low, rumbling sound that sends a confusing shiver down my spine. He releases his gentle hold on my chin, letting his hand drop to his side. The sudden absence of his burning touch leaves my skin tingling with cold.

In a fraction of a second, his demeanor changes again. The warmth vanishes, replaced by a wall of impenetrable ice. His tone abruptly shifts back to a cold, authoritarian warning.

"Stay entirely out of my way, Cleo Fairchild, and absolutely never raise your voice at me again. If you manage to do that, we might just get along in this house."

With that final, chilling command, he turns away. He casually strolls through the open wrought-iron gates, his broad back straight and his head held high. He disappears up the long, winding driveway toward the grand mansion, swallowed by the shadows of the ancient oak trees.

I remain standing alone on the cold pavement, entirely dumbfounded. The heavy duffel bag slips from my numb fingers, hitting the concrete with a dull thud. My mind spins in dizzying circles, desperately trying to comprehend the completely unexpected affection in his tone. Did Dorian Vance, the monster who tormented me for years, just call me pretty? Did he just gently touch my face?

A dangerous, confusing warmth begins to bloom in my chest, but it is instantly crushed.

My inner wolf snaps her jaws, emitting a stark, guttural growl of warning in my mind. She paces aggressively in the darkness, rejecting the fleeting moment of weakness.

This is Dorian. He is a predator. He is the devil who branded me Pug Cleo and laughed as I cried. There is absolutely no peace to be had in this sprawling estate. Those soft compliments and gentle touches are not a sign of redemption. They are undoubtedly just the beginning of a new, sick, manipulative game designed to break me down in ways I cannot yet understand. He enjoys holding power over me, and now he is testing new methods of torture.

Panic sets in, sharp and suffocating. I stare through the open gates at the distant mansion. This place is not a sanctuary. It is a golden cage, and the Alpha holds the key. I realize with terrifying clarity that my only real option for survival is to pack my bags, turn around, and find a college as far away from this mansion—and from him—as humanly possible.
