The Silent Beast
Torin recoiled as if Kaelia had backhanded him across the jaw. A collective gasp rippled through the reception hall, bouncing off the towering marble columns. The gathered warriors and omegas traded nervous glances, the silence turning heavy and suffocating. Torin stared down at her, his handsome face twisting in profound shock. He clearly expected her to bend the knee and play the part of the gracious, accommodating Luna.
"Kae, my wolf..." Torin started.
Kaelia wanted to laugh at the sickening predictability of it all. He used the exact same excuse in her previous life. Every single time he wanted to sneak off to Nadia's bed, he blamed his inner beast. He never rejected the girl like they had agreed upon in the privacy of their chambers. He turned her into his mistress while Kaelia drowned herself in pack administrative duties to numb the agonizing betrayal. That choice had led to the ruin of the pack. It led to the blood of her people spilling onto the earth.
She shifted her gaze slightly and met the eyes of her best friend, Tessa, who was standing near the grand staircase. The sight of Tessa breathing, whole, and alive sent a painful spark through Kaelia’s chest. Tessa was brutally murdered in the previous timeline, a direct casualty of Nadia’s treacherous schemes. Kaelia swore to the moon goddess she would obliterate this threat before history could repeat itself.
"I said no. We discussed this situation at length and we came to a clear agreement. We will find a respectable, distant pack to provide for her. She will not step foot within our borders. You need to execute the formal rejection right now, Torin, just as we agreed." Kaelia kept her posture rigid. She refused to let a single ounce of warmth bleed into her voice.
Torin stepped in front of the trembling redhead, shielding her from Kaelia's icy stare.
"Think about this, Kaelia. I would not ask you if it was not a matter of life and death. I am the Alpha of this territory. My wolf is going rabid for his mate. We cannot risk the fallout of severing a fresh bond while she is in this fragile state." Torin lowered his voice, trying to inject a note of desperate pleading into his tone.
Kaelia assessed the man standing before her. Why did he choose the public hall for this confrontation? It was a calculated move to force her hand in front of their subjects, banking on her desire to maintain peace.
"Our pack is one of the strongest in the country. We are not fighting any wars. You are a strong Alpha and a capable leader. I believe in your strength to overcome this primal urge. I know severing a true mate bond is painful, but you will survive it. We will get through the transition as the family we swore to be." Kaelia delivered the lines with flawless, unyielding grace.
"I just want what is best for the pack." Torin shifted his weight. His voice lost a fraction of its commanding edge.
"If you truly want what is best for the territory, then you will do it this very second. The longer you hesitate, the deeper the bond takes root in your soul. Delaying the inevitable turns this omega into a lethal vulnerability for our borders. You are already breaking your solemn vow to me on day one." Kaelia pushed forward. She hammered him with cold, undeniable logic, backing him into a corner he could not charm his way out of.
Torin let out a heavy sigh. His broad shoulders sagged in defeat. He turned his attention back to the cowering omega hiding behind his massive frame.
"I am sorry. I will make sure the pack treasury supports you from afar. You will be taken care of." Torin spoke to Nadia in a hushed, reluctant tone.
Kaelia gripped the folds of her dress to keep her hands from shaking. Was rewriting destiny really this simple? Could she prevent the impending bloodbath just by holding her ground and refusing to compromise?
"I, Alpha Torin Blackwood of the Glimmer River pack, reject..." Torin squared his shoulders, his voice echoing with ancient, commanding authority.
Nadia did not let him finish the sacred rite. She dropped to the marble floor like a puppet with severed strings. A hysterical, piercing wail tore from her throat, cutting off the Alpha's words.
"Please, no! I am still so weak! The pain of the severing will kill me right here on this floor! I will do anything. I beg of you!" Nadia threw her hands over her face, sobbing with violent, theatrical heaves.
Torin froze mid-sentence. His jaw clenched. He stared down at the weeping girl, paralyzed by the raw display of absolute agony.
Kaelia watched the hesitation bloom in his eyes. A sick, familiar sinking feeling twisted in her gut as she witnessed his resolve crumble into dust. She maintained her proud, unfazed stance, refusing to look away.
"Please, Alpha! I will be the lowest slave in the compound. I can scrub the floors until my hands bleed. I can cook the meals. I can wash the laundry. I will serve the Luna with my dying breath. Just spare my life!" Nadia cried out.
The girl scrambled forward frantically. She dragged her knees across the polished marble, launching herself across the short distance separating her from Kaelia. Nadia grabbed the delicate, woven hem of Kaelia's dress, twisting the fabric into her fists.
"My fate is in your hands, my Luna! Please do not sentence me to death! I will be your obedient servant until my final days. Spare me!" Nadia wept.
Through the curtain of messy tears and pathetic sobs, Nadia tilted her chin up just a fraction of an inch. For a fleeting second, the victim facade vanished. Kaelia caught a stark, venomous flash of pure, unadulterated hatred burning in the omega's eyes. It was the look of a predator locking onto its prey.
"Let go of me. There is no need for this display. You will be well provided for in another territory. You are just not staying here." Kaelia stepped back, trying to yank her garment free from Nadia's desperate grip.
A low, guttural snarl vibrated through the grand hall, sending a chill down Kaelia's spine.
"Enough!" Torin roared.
Kaelia snapped her gaze to her husband. His irises had vanished, replaced by a pair of glowing, crimson orbs. The wolf had breached the surface, seizing control of the man. The monstrous aura radiating from him demanded submission from every creature in the room. Kaelia held her ground, refusing to bare her neck.
"Calm down, Torin." Kaelia ordered.
Another furious growl ripped from his throat. The beast was beyond reason, blinded by the perceived threat to its mate.
"I said enough! She is staying. We will find a way around the protocol!" Torin barked.
He closed the distance in a blur of motion, scooping Nadia off the marble floor and cradling her against his broad chest. He turned his back on his Luna, marching toward the sweeping grand staircase that led to his private quarters. Kaelia memorized the route. He was carrying her to the furthest guest room in the eastern wing, the same exact room he would eventually move into to be closer to his new obsession.
Nadia went limp in his powerful arms. She buried her face into the crook of Torin’s neck, pressing her lips and nose against the exact patch of skin reserved for a mating mark. Right before they vanished out of sight, Nadia peaked over Torin's massive shoulder. She locked eyes with Kaelia and delivered a smug, gloating stare.
Kaelia reached up, her fingers grazing the raised scar of her own mating mark. A creeping sensation of dread pooled in her stomach. The timeline was fighting back. Every word she said, every defiant stance she took today, ultimately led to the exact same outcome. Destiny was trying to force history back into its blood-soaked groove. Her meticulous logic meant nothing in the face of a feral bond.
"Kae! Are you okay?" Tessa sprinted across the hall, pushing past a cluster of stunned warriors to reach Kaelia's side.
Kaelia looked at the bright, spirited face of the best friend she had spent months grieving. Without a second thought, Kaelia threw her arms around Tessa. She squeezed the Beta female fiercely, burying her face into her shoulder. Hot tears pricked the corners of Kaelia's eyes, not from the sting of Torin's betrayal, but from the overwhelming, dizzying relief of holding her friend alive and breathing once more.
"There, there. It is going to be alright. He will reconsider when he is in his right mind. I know he will." Tessa rubbed Kaelia's back, trying to soothe the trembling she mistook for heartbreak.
Kaelia inhaled a shaky breath. She let go of Tessa, swiftly pulling the flawless mask of the proud Luna back into place. Displaying vulnerability in front of the pack would only fuel the gossip. She had just lost her husband to a stray omega, she would not lose her dignity on top of it.
"I am fine. Now that our Alpha is indisposed, I have to step in. The pack administration comes first." Kaelia smoothed out the wrinkled fabric of her dress.
"Work? Right now? Are you serious?" Tessa frowned, her eyes wide with concern.
"Yes. We will discuss everything another time, Tessa. I promise we are going to be fine. All of us." Kaelia offered her friend a fleeting, reassuring smile before turning on her heel and marching out of the hall.
She needed space. She needed air. She needed to process the failure of her first plan and construct a dozen new ones to keep her people alive. The stone walls of the packhouse felt like a massive, suffocating crypt closing in around her. The only thing that could clear the panic gripping her mind was the release of a shift.
Kaelia bolted out of the rear exit, her shoes tearing through the pristine manicured lawns until she hit the untamed, rugged terrain of the boundary woods. The towering pines offered a dense canopy of shadows, shielding her from prying eyes. She stopped in a secluded clearing and began stripping off her elegant clothes, tossing the expensive fabrics onto the mossy earth.
She stood naked in the crisp evening air, bracing her muscles for the familiar, bone-snapping surge of the transformation.
Nothing happened.
Her human flesh remained frozen, smooth and unchanged in the twilight.
"Umbra, are you there?" Kaelia called out into the internal void, speaking to her wolf spirit for the first time since waking up in a younger version of her body less than an hour ago.
Dead silence answered her. There was no answering hum of power, no comforting presence in the back of her mind. The mental space where her fierce, dominant beast resided was chillingly vacant.
"Umbra!" Kaelia screamed internally, panic lacing her mental voice.
The silence stretched on, vast and terrifying.
Kaelia lunged forward, sprinting through the dense thicket on her bare feet. The wind whipped past her face. She leaped over a fallen log with effortless, soaring grace, her human legs pumping with raw, terrifying velocity. Her physical senses remained razor-sharp, and her speed was unmatched by any normal human. The supernatural gifts were intact, proving her wolf was still trapped somewhere deep within the recesses of her soul.
Yet the beast was silenced, locked away by an unknown affliction that Kaelia could not comprehend. A bitter, creeping dread settled into her bones, solidifying the solitary resolve she needed for the nightmare ahead.
