Nowhere to Hide

POV: First Person (Marcella).

A ruthless grip clamped down on my bicep, fingers digging deep into my tender flesh. I let out a sharp gasp as I was yanked out of the bustling school corridor and dragged into a dark, empty classroom. The heavy wooden door clicked shut behind me, instantly cutting off the ambient noise of the hallway. My spine slammed hard against the cold cinderblock wall, sending a dull jolt of pain radiating through my shoulder blades. Hot tears burned the corners of my eyes. I stared up into Kaelen's terribly familiar, intense green orbs, finding myself trapped by the boy who had been my personal nightmare since the sixth grade.

He stepped into my space, boxing me in with his imposing frame.

"Are you avoiding me?" His voice was rough, deep, and heavily edged with irritation.

I pressed my back against the concrete and stubbornly remained silent. He punished my defiance without hesitation. His large hand snaked up my throat, his long fingers wrapping around my neck to deliver a firm, warning squeeze.

I flinched in sheer panic. He used the momentum to lean his body flush against mine, pinning me in place. The hard lines of his chest pressed heavily into me, offering no room to breathe. He lowered his head, jarringly nuzzling his face right into the crook of my neck. His warm breath fanned across my skin, a stark contrast to the freezing terror rushing through my veins.

"You always smell so good." He murmured the words against my collarbone.

The statement formed a terrifying blend of physical menace and a deeply twisted, non-consensual intimacy. My stomach churned. The shrill warning bell rang through the school, signaling the start of first period. I placed both hands flat on his solid chest and desperately tried to push him away.

His expression darkened into pure anger. He slammed me back against the wall with devastating force. His strong fingers tangled painfully into the roots of my hair, yanking my head back until my scalp burned.

"Did you truly think that just because our parents are getting married, anything would change for you?" He growled in my face, his green eyes flashing with malice.

I clamped my eyes shut. He sadistically twisted the metaphorical knife deep in my chest.

He boasted with a cruel sneer on his face. "This marriage changes nothing. Except that now I will get to have you all alone much more often. Your mother adores me. She will never suspect a thing, and you will keep your mouth shut."

My chest heaved as I breathed in erratic, shallow gasps. I was trembling uncontrollably, desperately choking back the tears threatening to spill down my cheeks.

"Are you going to tell your mom?" He issued the threat in a deadly, hushed tone.

I shook my head frantically side to side. He stared down at my tear-streaked face. Satisfied by my total submission, he released his punishing grip on my hair. He offered a dark smirk and casually sauntered out of the classroom. He walked away as if nothing had happened, leaving me shattered in the shadows.

I stayed glued to the rough wall. My knees felt like liquid. I waited just long enough to steady my shaking legs, taking deep breaths of the stale classroom air, before finally making my way down the hallway toward the loud cafeteria.

I pushed open the heavy double doors. The overwhelming roar of hundreds of talking teenagers washed over me. I navigated through the maze of crowded tables until I spotted my best friends near the back windows. I pulled out a blue plastic chair and sat down heavily beside them, dropping my backpack onto the linoleum floor.

"Where were you for first period?" Harper asked, her eyes narrowing as she scanned my pale complexion and trembling hands.

"Kaelen." I quietly muttered his name, using it as my only excuse for missing the morning class.

Harper gave me a lingering, knowing, protective look. She understood the gravity of that single word better than anyone else. Maya, however, simply rolled her eyes and stabbed a piece of lettuce with her plastic fork.

Maya waved her fork in the air with a dismissive sigh. "I do not understand why he does not just admit it. He is acting like a five-year-old with a massive crush. He is only harassing you because he is intensely jealous. He has been acting this way ever since you danced with Gavin at the sixth-grade formal."

I mentally and vehemently rejected this absurd idea. Kaelen did not harbor a secret childhood crush on me. He had spent years ruthlessly mocking my curves and my caramel skin. He made it abundantly clear that I was the exact opposite of his preferred type. He paraded around the school with petite girls who had blonde hair and bright blue eyes. I was nothing like them. His hatred for me was a calculated, daily routine.

I tried to shake off the lingering dread clinging to my skin. We shifted the conversation, laughing as we momentarily lost ourselves in fond memories of Gavin. He had an easy, warm smile that used to make all the girls in our grade swoon.

"I was so upset when Gavin moved away." I chimed in with a playful pout, leaning my elbows on the sticky table and trying to force a sense of normalcy into my racing heart.

Suddenly, the lingering laughter died in my throat.

"Were you now?" Kaelen's cold voice cut sharply through the cafeteria noise.

I stiffened into a rigid board. He slid smoothly into the empty seat directly beside me, snatching a french fry off my tray like he owned it. His large group of friends followed his lead, aggressively invading our quiet table and claiming the surrounding chairs. Harper glared daggers at him, her jaw ticking with raw fury.

"Leave us alone, Kaelen." She snapped at him without hesitation.

He ignored her existence. He did not even spare her a dismissive glance. Instead, he shifted his broad shoulders toward me. His large hand landed heavily on my bare knee right under the table. My breath hitched. His long fingers dug deeply and painfully into my soft skin, delivering a silent, agonizing physical warning to keep me submissive.

He loudly announced the information to the entire table, letting the heavy words hang suspended in the air. "I wanted to share the good news with everyone. Cella's mom and my dad are getting married. We are moving in together this weekend."

He dominated the space, marking his territory in public. Absolute shock rippled visibly through my friends. Maya dropped her fork with a loud clatter. Harper's face drained of color as her expression shifted from defensive anger to deep, genuine worry.

Kaelen squeezed my knee one last agonizing time, his nails biting into my flesh, before he pushed his chair back and stood up to leave. He dropped a mocking wink at me. He casually walked away with his loud entourage, leaving an icy, suffocating silence in his destructive wake.

Maya leaned across the table. "Did he hurt you?" She asked worriedly, staring at my frozen posture.

"No. I am fine." I frantically denied it, refusing to meet her gaze.

Harper's deepening, suspicious frown proved she was not convinced for a single second. She knew I would not tell her the truth in the middle of a crowded room. I stayed dead quiet and stared blindly at my plastic tray. I desperately willed my body's tremors to stop.

I repeated a desperate mantra in my head. One more year. One more year, and he will graduate and be gone.

But deep down in the pit of my stomach, a dark realization settled over me like a suffocating blanket. I knew things would never get easier. His torment was escalating, and I had no current means of escape. I had to somehow find a way to stand up to him, or the next twelve months under the same roof would destroy me.
