Washing Away the Night

Cassia Rowe.

The heavy, suffocating darkness of the meeting hall pressed down on me as I forced my bruised, trembling body off the hard wooden desk. My legs shook beneath me, threatening to buckle and give out with every tentative step I took across the thick carpeted floor. I fumbled in the pitch-black space, my frantic hands brushing blindly against the polished wood of the furniture until my fingers closed around my torn clothes. The sticky, slick wetness of the stranger’s hot semen mixed with my own fresh blood on my inner thighs. The crushing weight of my actions crashed down on me as I rushed frantically back to the silent, imposing mansion. I was a married woman, yet I had just surrendered my sacred virginity to a faceless stranger in the dark.

The cold night wind bit sharply into my raw, exposed skin as I slipped through the shadowed back entrance of the grand estate. The gravel crunched softly beneath my unsteady feet, each sound making me flinch in fear of being discovered by a patrolling guard. The massive hallways of the mansion were dead silent, offering a brief, hollow reprieve from the chaotic nightmare I had just endured. Every desperate step I took sent a sharp, tearing pain radiating through my sore core. I reached my bedroom, slipped inside the familiar space, and locked the heavy oak door behind me with a loud click. I leaned my spine against the solid wood, gasping for air as my chest heaved. The overwhelming scent of the man—dark, musky, and dominant—clung stubbornly to my hair and skin. It was a vile, undeniable brand of my unfaithful, traumatic secret.

I pushed myself away from the door and stumbled directly into the bathroom. I reached into the glass enclosure and turned the shower dial all the way to the coldest possible setting. I did not wait for the water to warm. I stripped off the ruined, soiled shreds of my clothes, letting them drop to the floor in a sad pile, and stepped directly under the freezing spray. The icy water hit my bruised flesh like a physical blow, making my breath hitch in my tight throat.

I grabbed a coarse bath sponge and a hard bar of soap. I scrubbed my skin raw under the freezing cold shower. I dragged the rough sponge mercilessly over my arms, my chest, and my thighs, desperate to wash away the memory of his heavy hands, his intoxicating smell, and the sticky fluid still leaking from my aching vagina. The burning friction of the rough sponge clashed against the freezing water. My pale skin turned angry and red under the harsh treatment, but the effort brought no relief. I felt filthy. I felt broken. Shaking with profound shame and confusion, I let my trembling legs fold beneath me. I sank to the wet ceramic tiles and let the merciless water beat down on the crown of my head.

I wept openly to the Moon Goddess. I tilted my head back against the glass wall, my hot, bitter tears mixing seamlessly with the freezing water streaming down my face.

"Why, Moon Goddess? Why did you let this happen to me?" I cried out, my voice cracking and echoing in the steam-less room.

I had carefully saved myself for my true fated mate. I had guarded my body and my heart through endless years of neglect, bullying, and abuse. I was brutally forced into an unwanted marriage with Darius, trapped in a miserable life of cold indifference and strict rules, but I had still held onto the fragile, innocent hope of finding my chosen mate. And now I was subjected to this traumatic violation. My virginity was gone, stolen on a hard desk in the dark by a man whose face I never even saw.

The freezing water numbed my trembling limbs, but the agonizing pain in my chest only grew sharper. I sat huddled on the shower floor for what felt like hours, staring blankly at the silver drain until my tears finally stopped falling. Exhausted and emotionally drained, I forced my battered body to stand. I dried my skin, wrapped myself in a thin cotton robe, and crawled into my empty bed. The silence of the room offered zero comfort, but my body had nothing left to give. I finally let the heavy darkness of sleep claim me, pulling me under into a dreamless void.

I was jolted awake by the shrill, blaring sound of my alarm clock cutting through the silence. I gasped and sat up, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I turned my head and looked at the digital numbers on the nightstand. They glared back at me, showing exactly 4:30 AM. Panic flooded my system. I was running late.

I threw the heavy covers off and rushed to the bathroom, splashing cold water on my pale face. My muscles screamed in loud protest, aching deeply from the brutal treatment of the previous night. The lingering, sensory memories of the stranger’s heavy, muscular body pressing me into the desk threatened to pull me under. I felt the phantom grip of his rough hands grabbing my hips and the searing pain of his teeth biting into my shoulder. I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing myself to push aside those haunting images as I quickly brushed my teeth. I could not afford to break down again.

I dressed rapidly in a modest, long-sleeved blouse, making sure the high collar hid the dark bruising on my skin. I hurried down the sweeping staircase and into the vast kitchen to prepare breakfast for Blaire. The routine tasks offered a small anchor of normalcy. I cracked eggs into a hot pan, fried thick slices of bacon, and arranged fresh fruit on a silver platter. The rich smell of the brewing coffee made my traumatized stomach turn, but I pushed through the nausea. Every single movement required immense effort. My core pulsed with a dull, constant ache.

When the food was perfectly arranged, I brought the delicate tray up to Blaire’s bedroom. I stopped in front of her door, took a steadying breath to calm my racing pulse, and knocked softly before turning the brass handle and stepping inside.

Blaire was already awake, lounging back against her plush silk pillows. She took one look at my tired face and greeted me with a deeply venomous, mocking smirk. Her dark eyes glinted with unfiltered, malicious joy as I approached her lavish bed.

"Did you sleep well, knowing that Darius’s true love, Nadia, is back in town?" she taunted, clearly relishing my visible unease.

The words hit me like a solid punch to the stomach. My hands gripped the edges of the silver tray tighter. Nadia. The mere mention of the woman Darius actually loved made my chest tighten with a suffocating pressure. I locked my knees to keep from swaying, staring fixedly at the intricate wood grain of her bedside table.

"Oh, look at you," Blaire continued, her tone dripping with toxic delight. "You’re nothing but a placeholder, a pathetic wallflower in his life. You took her rightful place, and you deserve all the hate for it. Nadia is here to take back what rightfully belongs to her."

Stifling my aching, bruised heart, I walked forward and set the tray carefully on her nightstand. I refused to let her see how deeply her cruel words cut into my soul.

"I am just trying to do what is expected of me." I quietly replied, keeping my gaze firmly away from her gloating face.

She laughed coldly. The sound was sharp, heartless, and cruel, echoing loudly in the spacious, sunlit room.

"You’re a fool if you think Darius will ever see you as anything more than an inconvenience. Nadia is his true love. You are just a temporary nuisance. Do not ever forget your place in this house."

I turned on my heel and walked straight out of the room. Her hollow laughter followed me down the long hallway, sinking its sharp claws into my fragile resolve. I wiped a stray, traitorous tear from my cheek. I had to survive this day.

Arriving at the towering corporate office a few hours later, I threw myself into my demanding work to drown out the emotional pain. I typed out complex reports, organized endless stacks of heavy files, and answered ringing phones with rigid, mechanical precision. The chatter of my colleagues and the hum of the printers faded into background noise. I desperately wanted to numb my racing brain. I needed to forget the heavy, demanding hands of the stranger, the freezing shower, and Blaire’s venomous morning taunts.

My fragile peace shattered into pieces when Vanessa marched up to my desk, holding a steaming ceramic mug of coffee.

"Take this to Darius right now." she ordered, shoving the silver saucer toward my chest. "He needs a fresh cup."

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. The thought of facing my husband made a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck. I was terrified he would magically discover my unfaithful, traumatic secret from last night. Darius was a powerful Alpha. His senses were incredibly sharp. What if the stranger’s dark scent still lingered on my skin, hidden beneath the soap and floral perfume? What if he looked into my eyes and saw the raw violation I had endured in the dark?

I took the tray with trembling hands. I walked slowly down the long, carpeted corridor leading to the executive suite. Every step felt like a heavy march to the executioner's block. My heart pounded a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs. I reached his grand mahogany door, swallowed the thick lump in my throat, and knocked.

"Come in," his deep, commanding voice called out from the other side.

I pushed the heavy door open and entered his grand office. Darius sat behind a massive, sleek desk. The morning sunlight filtered through the expensive floor-to-ceiling windows, highlighting his sharp, aristocratic jawline and the intense focus in his piercing gray eyes. He did not look up from his glowing laptop screen as I cautiously approached him.

"Here’s your coffee, sir," I whispered softly.

I leaned forward over the polished wood and cautiously set the tray down on his desk. As I pulled my hand back, our fingers accidentally brushed against each other.

A sudden, violent jolt of pure electricity surged through my entire being.

The shock traveled up my arm, exploding into a blinding shower of sparks that set my nerve endings on fire. I gasped out loud, stumbling a step back. Thousands of tingling, warm sensations raced through my bloodstream, chasing away the cold ache of the morning. His natural scent, a crisp blend of pine woods and fresh winter air, suddenly flooded my senses, wrapping around me like a warm blanket.

Our eyes locked. For a breathless second, the entire world simply stopped. The ambient noise of the bustling city outside the glass vanished. The ticking of the silver wall clock faded into nothing. There was only Darius, his gray eyes wide and startled, staring intently back at me.

Deep inside my soul, a dormant presence stirred. My inner wolf, Raeve, who had been silent and dormant since my mother's tragic death years ago, suddenly clawed her way to the surface. She stretched her spiritual limbs, her ancient power radiating fiercely through my bones. She pressed against the forefront of my mind and whispered a single, impossible word:

*Mate.*

I froze in mind-numbing shock. My breath hitched in my tight throat. I stared at the man sitting across the desk. All this time I had silently endured a miserable life of cold indifference, strict rules, and physical mistreatment from him. He hated me. He thought I was a gold digger. And now, against all logic and reason, my long-lost wolf was confidently claiming him as our fated mate.

Darius’s piercing gray gaze lingered on my face briefly, flickering with an unreadable, complex emotion. For a fraction of a second, I thought I saw a flash of recognition in his eyes. But then, his icy, impenetrable mask slipped back into place. He blinked, tore his gaze away from mine, and coldly returned his attention to his laptop screen as if nothing had happened.

I spun around and fled frantically out of his office. I rushed down the hall and burst into the employee washroom, locking the door behind me. My mind was spinning out of control. I leaned heavily against the marble sink, staring at my pale, terrified reflection in the large mirror.

How could he possibly be my fated mate when he was so deeply entangled with Nadia?

"This makes no sense," I whispered to the empty room, splashing cold water on my flushed cheeks. "He hates me."

But the bond humming in my veins was undeniable. The Goddess had chosen him for me. Desperate for a tiny sliver of hope, I decided I had to tell him the absolute truth. I desperately wanted to believe that if he knew we were chosen mates by the Goddess, he might finally treat me with respect. If he knew the truth, maybe he would give our broken marriage a real chance. We could start over.

With newfound, trembling determination, I dried my face, squared my shoulders, and walked back toward his office. My heart hammered with a mixture of terror and fragile hope.

But as I approached the grand mahogany door, I noticed it was slightly ajar. I froze dead in my tracks. Through the narrow gap, I heard soft, intimate voices. I held my breath, took a cautious step forward, and peered inside.

I clearly saw Nadia standing in the center of the room. She was wrapped tightly and intimately in his strong arms. Darius held her close, his large hands resting gently on her lower back, a stark contrast to the cold indifference he always showed me.

"I will always do that for you, Darius. I love you." she whispered happily, her voice full of unwavering devotion.

"I love you too." Darius replied instantly.

His deep voice was tender, vulnerable, and heartbreakingly sincere. It was a tone I had never heard him use. A tone reserved only for the woman he truly loved.

My fragile heart shattered into a million jagged pieces. The physical pain in my chest felt like a knife twisting into my ribs, tearing through my newly awakened wolf. The sound of his confession echoed in my ears, shattering the freshly sparked mate bond and leaving my soul bleeding. Refusing to let my hot tears fall in front of them, I backed away from the heavy door. I turned around, fleeing blindly down the blurred, lavish corridors.

I felt like a pathetic fool for ever hoping he would give us a chance. The truth hit me with crushing clarity. I was nothing but a disposable pawn in a cruel game I simply didn’t understand.
