The Gilded Fortress
POV: Cassia
The sleek black car sped through the night, carrying me further away from the only life I had ever known. The heavy white wedding silk pooled thickly around my legs, a suffocating reminder of the contract I had just signed under my father's ruthless gaze. I wiped the wetness from my cheeks with the back of my hand, staring blankly through the tinted glass. The hours dragged on in a painful, agonizing blur. The familiar dirt roads, the sprawling green fields, and the towering pine trees of the Dusk Pack melted away into the consuming darkness. Every mile marker we passed felt like another nail in the coffin of my freedom. We crossed the invisible border lines, leaving the quiet, humble countryside far behind.
The scenery outside the window underwent a brutal, shocking transformation. The dense forests and starry skies were replaced by massive concrete highways and heavy traffic. The soft, natural glow of the moon was swallowed by the harsh, artificial glare of neon lights and street lamps. We entered the heart of the Iron Moon Pack territory. Skyscrapers towered overhead, their massive glass windows reflecting the glittering lights of the sprawling metropolis. The city was a living, breathing beast. It throbbed with a relentless, mechanical pulse that echoed right in my chest, making my heart race with unchecked anxiety. The sheer scale of the towering buildings and the bustling, chaotic energy on the streets felt oppressive. I was a countryside girl raised among rivers and quiet woods. This concrete jungle was a foreign, intimidating world that threatened to swallow me whole.
The car navigated through the winding, busy city streets until we reached the very center of the territory. The driver turned the heavy steering wheel, bringing the vehicle toward a set of massive, imposing wrought-iron gates. They swung open silently, granting us entry into a sprawling private compound isolated from the city noise.
Darius’s estate sat at the core of the city. It was an imposing, modern fortress that exuded relentless wealth and unchecked power. The massive structure was built with sharp architectural angles, dark stone, and huge panels of reinforced glass. It dominated the landscape, a clear visual representation of his unrivaled dominance over the pack. This was not a welcoming pack house designed for community and warmth. It was a cold, sterile stronghold fit for a ruthless king.
The car rolled to a smooth stop near the grand entrance, tires crunching softly against the gravel. A group of servants waited in a perfect, straight line on the wide stone steps. They wore identical dark uniforms. Their posture was rigid, their expressions blank and disciplined. They moved with trained efficiency, reflecting the strict order and perfection that governed this territory. The silent driver opened my door. I stepped out into the cool night air, clutching the heavy silk of my dress to keep from tripping.
One of the female servants took a step forward and bowed her head in a stiff, practiced motion.
"Welcome, Miss. I am here to show you to your room."
Her voice was smooth and formal, lacking any trace of genuine warmth. The title she used struck a harsh chord in my mind. She called me Miss. Not Luna. Not Mrs. Thorne. Just Miss.
I swallowed the dry lump forming in my throat and nodded. I was too stunned by my grim reality to offer a polite response. I followed her through the massive front doors and into the grand halls of the estate. I tried to keep my gaze lowered, but the sheer scale of the interior forced my eyes upward. The floors were covered in polished white marble that echoed with every step we took. The ceilings stretched high above, adorned with modern crystal chandeliers that cast a cold, brilliant light across the empty hallways.
The mansion felt deeply sterile. There were no family portraits hanging on the walls, no warm rugs covering the stone floors, no signs of life, laughter, or love. Every room we passed was a perfect showcase of extreme wealth and power, devoid of comfort. It felt much more like an expensive museum than a home. The heavy silence in the corridors was suffocating.
We finally reached the end of a long hallway on the second floor. The servant opened a heavy wooden door and stepped aside, gesturing for me to enter.
"This will be your room. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask."
I stepped inside, my breath catching in my throat. The bedroom was exceptionally spacious. A massive king-sized bed sat in the center, covered in dark, crisp linens. A seating area with sleek leather furniture occupied one corner. Floor-to-ceiling windows made up the far wall, offering a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline.
I offered a stiff nod to the servant. The heavy door clicked shut, sealing me inside my new luxurious prison.
I dropped my small travel bag onto the floor and walked slowly toward the glass. The sprawling city stretched out as far as the eye could see. The bright lights blurred together in the distance. It was a beautiful sight in its own mechanical way, but it offered zero comfort. I was trapped in a place where I knew no one, sold to a man who was a total stranger.
The terrifying stories I had heard about the Iron Moon Pack flooded my mind, refusing to be ignored. A cold shiver raced down my spine. The pack was notorious for its iron-fisted control and unmatched wealth. Rumors painted a horrifying picture of Alpha Darius. Whispers in the neighboring packs claimed his empire was built on a foundation of dead bodies. They said he was merciless to outsiders and even more brutal to his own people. He demanded unwavering loyalty. Disobedience was met with swift death. I had heard a specific, chilling story about Darius tearing the throat out of a rogue who dared to cross his borders, doing it with his bare hands while his pack watched in dead silence.
I pressed my forehead against the cold glass of the window. My chest tightened with quiet despair. I closed my eyes and sent a desperate plea into the night.
Please, Moon Goddess. Help me survive this.
I turned away from the sprawling city view and walked into the attached bathroom. The space was a massive expanse of black marble and shining chrome. I stood in front of the huge vanity mirror and stared hard at my reflection.
I tried to recognize the girl looking back at me. My dark hair fell in long, loose waves, framing a pale face drained of all color and hope. Light green eyes, the color of fresh spring leaves, stared back with a haunting mix of uncertainty and profound fear. My defined eyebrows gave my face a faint touch of defiance, a desperate echo of the resilience I tried to cling to. My full lips were pressed into a thin, anxious line.
I looked at my shoulders, shivering under the thin fabric of my dress. My father's parting words echoed relentlessly in my mind, ringing loud and clear in the silent, cold room.
"Do your duty. Remember, you are saving our family."
A bitter, broken smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. Duty. Sacrifice. Those concepts were the heavy chains binding my wrists and ankles. My father had traded my freedom, my body, and my future to clear his massive gambling debts and save the Dusk Pack from financial ruin. The girl in the mirror was no longer Cassia Rowe. She was a bartered commodity, a token handed over to a ruthless monster.
I gripped the edges of the marble sink until my knuckles turned white. The betrayal stung worse than the fear. I was sold off like a piece of useless property, discarded by the very man who was supposed to protect me.
A sharp, sudden knock on the bedroom door shattered the heavy silence.
I flinched, my heart skipping a painful beat. I walked out of the bathroom and opened the door. The same servant stood in the hallway, though her eyes held a brief flash of tired sympathy before returning to a blank stare.
"Miss, Alpha Darius has requested your presence."
Anxiety tightened its icy grip around my ribs, squeezing the air from my lungs. This was the moment. I was about to face the ruthless Alpha King whose terrifying reputation preceded him. The man who owned my life.
I took a deep, shaky breath and smoothed my hands down the front of my dress. I stepped out of the room and followed her. Each step I took felt like I was walking toward an execution block. We navigated through a maze of lavish, endless corridors. Every hallway seemed more extravagant and intimidating than the last. My mind raced with terrifying scenarios, but I forced my spine straight. I refused to let my trembling show.
We reached a set of grand, imposing double doors made of solid dark oak. The servant knocked twice, pushed the heavy doors open, and gestured for me to step inside.
I crossed the threshold. The grand office was cavernous and dimly lit. Thick velvet curtains blocked out the city lights. The shadows seemed to cling to the dark leather furniture and the towering bookshelves lining the walls.
I scanned the room, searching for him. For a brief second, I thought the office was empty.
Then, he emerged from the deep shadows near the back of the room.
The air in the office immediately thickened. It became heavy, charged with a sudden, suffocating pressure that made it hard to breathe. His mere presence was a physical weight pressing down on my chest, a sudden bolt of lightning in the dark space.
Darius was a towering, physically imposing figure. He stood at least six feet five inches tall, easily dwarfing my five-foot-seven frame. He moved with a slow, predatory grace that commanded my attention. He was breathtakingly handsome, in a rugged, terrifying way that left me in a state of silent shock. He wore a black button-down shirt that clung tightly to his broad chest and muscular shoulders. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing thick, muscular forearms covered in intricate, dark tattoos that snaked down to his left wrist.
His dark hair was neatly pulled back, with a few stray locks falling across his forehead. His face was strikingly handsome. A straight Roman nose and full, pink lips promised both sweetness and danger. His sharp, carved jawline was covered in a layer of dark stubble, adding a raw, dangerous edge to his masculine features. But it was his eyes that froze the blood in my veins. They were a piercing, stormy gray. They locked onto me with the intense, unblinking focus of a hunter spotting its prey.
I stood frozen near the door, captivated and terrified by the sheer magnetism radiating from him. He was a force of nature, exuding a terrifying aura of power and dominance. I could feel my ears burning under his heavy stare.
He stopped behind a massive mahogany desk. He leaned his hips casually against the edge of the wood, crossing his long legs at the ankles. He folded his thick arms over his broad chest. The tattoos shifted beneath his skin under the harsh lighting.
"Please, have a seat." he commanded. His voice was a deep, rough rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
I moved on stiff legs, crossing the room and sinking into the dark leather chair positioned across from his desk. I kept my back straight and my hands folded tightly in my lap.
He stared down at me. The silence stretched, thick and uncomfortable. His gray eyes dragged over my face, stripping away my defenses with a single look.
"I loathe this marriage." he confessed. His tone was heavy with undisguised disdain. "I only agreed to it because of my grandfather."
His blunt confession hit me like a physical blow. The raw hatred in his voice was startling. He felt just as trapped in this arrangement as I did, but he held all the power.
I opened my mouth to respond, to tell him I didn't want this either.
His gaze sharpened into an intense, cutting glare before I could form a single word.
"You and your family have something to do with this marriage. I know you manipulated the old man." he accused. His voice was a low, dangerous growl laced with pure venom. "But let me make one thing clear: I have no interest in making you my wife, let alone the Luna of my pack."
I gripped the fabric of my dress. The sheer injustice of his words sparked a flash of desperate anger in my chest.
"I didn't—"
"Did I say that you could speak?" he snapped. The hard authority in his voice hit me like a physical strike.
I snapped my mouth shut and swallowed hard. The spark of anger died under the crushing weight of his Alpha aura.
He reached behind him, opened a drawer, and pulled out a thick stack of papers. He tossed the unread contract onto the desk and slid it toward me with a sharp flick of his wrist.
"Did you read all the terms of the contract before you signed it?" he asked, his gray eyes flashing with raw contempt.
I stared at the thick document. The painful memory of my father forcing the pen into my hand flooded my mind. I slowly shook my head, unable to meet his furious gaze.
He let out a harsh, mocking sneer.
"So, you didn't even bother to read the contract. You were just eager to marry me, weren't you? Desperate to become the queen and enjoy my money. A classic gold digger."
The unfair accusation burned my skin. I wanted to scream at him, to tell him about the crippling debt, about my father's cruel threats.
"No." I protested, my voice trembling with emotion. "That's not true."
"Save your excuses." he spat, silencing me with a sharp gesture. "My grandfather may have asked me to marry you, but let me make this crystal clear. This is not a real marriage. Read it."
I leaned forward with trembling hands and flipped open the heavy cover of the contract. The legal jargon blurred together.
He didn't wait for me to read. He started listing the terms himself, each rule landing like a heavy hammer strike against my pride.
"You are not allowed to call yourself Luna outside these walls. You will not use my last name. You will never act as my wife in public. You will only play the part of a dutiful wife in front of my grandfather and my parents. Nothing more."
He pushed off the desk and took a slow, intimidating step closer to my chair.
"You will not enjoy a single dime of my wealth. You will work and compensate for the money I spent to help with your family's debts. You are forbidden to sit with me, eat with me, or share the air I breathe in this house."
The rules were cold and uncompromising. They stripped away any remaining shred of dignity I had left. He was making sure I knew my place. I was a servant, a prisoner working off a debt. I kept my eyes fixed on the contract, nodding slowly. Honestly, his demand that we stay away from each other was a blessing. I had zero desire to spend time with a man who despised my existence.
He leaned over the desk. His massive shadow swallowed me whole.
"I will not mark you or touch you. I will never take you to bed or make love to you."
I froze. The explicit words echoed in the silent, dim office.
I waited for the sting of rejection, the deep pain of being discarded as a woman. But it never came. Instead, a profound, overwhelming wave of relief washed over my being. The heavy tension that had been crushing my lungs suddenly vanished.
He won’t mark me. He won't touch me without my permission.
This meant I was still free in the ways that truly mattered. I wouldn't be tied to him by a permanent bite. I wouldn't have to surrender my body to a cruel stranger. This meant I could still hold onto the quiet, lifelong dream of finding my true, fated mate one day and spending my life with him. The Moon Goddess had not abandoned me. I was genuinely happy.
I shut my eyes and let out a long, shaky breath.
"Thank you, Moon Goddess." I whispered.
As the words left my lips, I felt a drastic shift in the room. A deadly silence fell over the office. The temperature seemed to drop instantly. I felt his gaze bore into me with a burning intensity. His anger was clear even without opening my eyes.
I dared to meet his gaze once more. Darius was glaring at me with barely concealed fury. My genuine relief had deeply insulted him. His massive ego couldn't handle the fact that I was thankful he didn't want to claim me. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles ticked beneath his dark stubble.
He stepped around the desk, closing the distance until he stood right over my chair.
"Lastly, you are not allowed to leave this mansion without my permission, and no one must know about these terms and conditions." he hissed. His voice was a menacing, low growl that sent a fresh shiver down my spine.
I shrank back into the leather chair, terrified by the sudden shift in his demeanor. I nodded silently, looking away from his furious gray eyes.
"These are the rules you should follow, and breaking one means you have broken them all. I will not tolerate it. You will be punished severely if you do so." he warned, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation.
I nodded again, desperate to simply stay out of his way and survive this nightmare.
I thought the grueling conversation was finally over. I waited for him to dismiss me back to my cold, empty room.
Darius straightened up, towering over me once again. He adjusted the cuffs of his dark shirt, his expression hardening back into a mask of cold, unforgiving authority. He dropped a final, exhausting command that shattered any hope I had of resting.
"From tomorrow onwards, you will work in my company. David will take you there."
