Leaving Kaelen For Good
The heavy, intoxicating scent of burning sandalwood incense thickened the air, casting a warm haze over the dim yellow bedroom. Kaelen Kardos grabbed Nara Valerius by the waist and shoved her hard against the heavy oak door. His large, rough hand moved up, wrapping firmly around her throat. He pressed his thumb against her racing pulse, pinning her in place. She wore nothing but a sheer, white silk nightgown.
"Nara, you are mine tonight." Kaelen stared down at her, his voice dropping into a dark, magnetic register.
Standing at six-foot-two, he towered over her, effortlessly caging her smaller frame against the solid wood. Before she could form a single word of surrender, his mouth crashed down on hers. It was a punishing, bruising kiss that immediately stole the oxygen from her lungs. Nara tipped her chin up, opening her mouth to welcome the raw heat of his tongue. The friction of his hard body grinding against her sent a sharp rush of desire straight to her core. She dragged her manicured nails down his broad back, meeting his desperate urgency with her own.
It was their fifth anniversary. She loved this man with every ounce of her soul.
Kaelen gripped the delicate collar of her nightgown and ripped the fabric straight down the middle. The silk tore with a loud, sharp rip, exposing her bare breasts to the cool air and his heated gaze. He lowered his head, pulling a hard nipple into his mouth. He bit down just enough to make her gasp, swirling his tongue over the sensitive peak. His other hand slid down her flat stomach, dipping between her thighs to find her already slick and ready for him.
The air crackled with heavy, electric anticipation. They were seconds away from taking each other right there against the door.
Then, the shrill, cutting ring of Kaelen's phone shattered the silence.
Kaelen went rigid. A tense muscle ticked in his clenched jaw. He let out a harsh breath, stepping back to snatch the vibrating phone from the wooden nightstand. Nara leaned back against the door, her chest heaving as she glanced at the glowing screen.
*Falco.* His best friend.
Kaelen swiped the screen to answer, bringing the phone to his ear with obvious frustration.
"Kaelen, have you lost your damn mind? You—"
"Switching to Fracian. Now is not the time." Kaelen cut him off in a flat, commanding tone.
He seamlessly transitioned into the complex foreign language, expecting the barrier to give him perfect privacy. He had no idea Nara had spent the last six agonizing months secretly studying Fracian. She had spent countless late nights listening to audio tapes and reading thick translation books, all to surprise him for their upcoming anniversary trip to Aethelgard. Instead, every foreign syllable sliced through the quiet room, translating flawlessly in her mind.
"You actually married Shaya? What the hell were you thinking?" Falco shouted through the receiver in rapid Fracian, his voice loud enough to echo in the quiet bedroom. "Five years ago, you almost died street racing to save her. She ditched you! She ran overseas with another man and had boyfriend after boyfriend. She never gave a damn about you! And now you went and secretly married her?"
Nara stopped breathing.
The lingering heat on her bare skin vanished, replaced by a freezing, suffocating weight that dropped straight into the pit of her stomach. The room began to spin.
Kaelen paced toward the floor-to-ceiling window, his tone maddeningly calm and detached.
"Shaya has terminal cancer. She does not have long to live. Her dying wish was to marry me and end our story properly. She said the person she owes most in her life is me. I cannot let her die with regrets."
"And Nara? What about Nara?" Falco demanded, his voice thick with raw disgust. "After your street crash, she never left your side. She cared for you every single day and gave you everything she had. And now you want her to find out she is the other woman? How the hell is she supposed to live with that?"
"She will not find out. As long as everyone keeps quiet, she will never know." Kaelen dismissed the concern with brutal, chilling efficiency. "When Shaya is dead, I will marry Nara."
"And you seriously believe Shaya has cancer?"
"That is enough. I know what I am doing." Kaelen ended the call and tossed the phone onto the rumpled bedsheets.
He turned back to Nara, his eyes darkening with lust once again as he closed the distance between them. He reached out for her bare waist, fully ready to resume the physical intimacy, oblivious to the massacre of her soul.
Nara shoved his chest hard with both hands.
She crossed her arms over her torn nightgown, her skin pale as chalk, her slender limbs shaking uncontrollably.
"I do not feel well."
Seeing her huddled and shivering, Kaelen's expression softened into genuine, tender concern. It was a jarring, sickening contrast to the ice-cold deceit she had just witnessed moments prior.
"What is wrong? Do you need me to take you to the hospital?"
The pure sincerity in his deep voice twisted the knife deeper into her bleeding heart. He was such a flawless, beautiful liar.
Before she could force a word past her tight throat, a new notification lit up the phone on the mattress. The WhatsApp icon glowed brightly. Nara’s sharp eyes caught the preview text before the screen went dark.
*Shaya: Kaelen, I am in pain. Please come.*
Kaelen glanced down at the screen. The softness vanished from his handsome face, instantly replaced by a tight, urgent mask.
"An emergency just came up at the office. I need to handle it right away." He grabbed his tailored coat from the armchair and shrugged it on in a rush. "Try to get some rest. If you still feel sick later, call me, and I will have my personal driver take you to the hospital."
He did not wait for her response. He walked out the door, the heavy lock clicking shut behind him.
Left alone in the suffocating silence, Nara collapsed onto the edge of the large bed.
She dug her fingernails into her palms until the fragile skin broke and bled. The physical sting did nothing to dull the gaping hole ripped through her chest. The tears finally spilled over, hot and bitter, sliding down her pale cheeks.
Harrowing memories she had spent years trying to bury clawed their way back to the surface.
She had been switched at birth. For eighteen years, she lived a life of luxury and warmth in the Vance Household. Then, the real daughter returned. Shaya Vance.
The day Shaya arrived, Nara was dragged straight to hell.
Shaya despised her for stealing her privileged childhood. As twisted payback, Shaya ordered the household staff to lock Nara in a dark, damp, windowless basement. For a year, the moldy concrete floor and the suffocating darkness became her entire world. Shaya would visit her with a sick smile, lashing her bare back with a heavy leather riding crop. Every strike was brutal punishment for simply existing. Her adoptive parents turned a blind eye to the torture, eager to appease their biological child.
Nara had finally escaped with bloody, bruised feet, slipping past a careless guard and collapsing right at the boots of a visiting guest.
Kaelen Kardos.
He had scooped her broken body up and carried her out of that nightmare. He became her sole savior, swearing to protect her from the Vance family forever. Over the years, he built a massive corporate empire, and she gave him her absolute devotion.
When he defied everyone to join a lethal street race and crashed, he fell into a deep, hopeless coma. The Kardos Clan had prepared for his funeral. Nara had not. She scoured the dangerous underworld for a miracle healer. To save Kaelen's life, she sacrificed something unimaginably precious—a piece of her own body and a future she could never get back.
He survived. He became the ruthless CEO of Kardos Global. He promised her the world. He promised to marry her on this exact anniversary day.
Instead, he had secretly married the exact monster who had tortured her.
Nara stared down at the torn strips of white silk hanging from her shoulders. She wiped her wet cheeks with the back of her hand, feeling her shattered heart harden into impenetrable ice. She refused to be the other woman. She would rather die than share a man with Shaya Vance.
She reached for her own phone on the glass vanity. Her fingers were steady as she dialed the international number she had kept saved for months.
The call connected on the second ring.
"This is Nara Valerius. I am calling to officially accept the training offer from Vindex International in Aethelgard. I will be leaving immediately."
She hung up the phone, staring at her own cold reflection in the mirror. She was leaving Kaelen Kardos for good.
