A Clean Break
The suffocating tension inside the central police precinct crackled like static electricity. Onlookers whispered behind their hands. Officers paused their typing at their desks. Every mocking gaze pinned Valerie Montgomery to the floor. Her face flushed a deep, humiliated crimson under the blinding spotlight of public scorn. Visible veins pulsed at Declan’s temples as he surveyed the public relations disaster unfolding around him. The silence in the room gnawed at his immense pride. Desperate to quell the humiliating spectacle and silence Phoebe Delaney’s unrelenting tongue, he turned toward Sloane. He adopted an air of exasperated generosity, preparing to open his checkbook in a figurative sense.
"Sloane, what exactly do you want to keep your friend quiet? Name your price for the compensation. Tell me the number, and I will write the check right now to smooth over your wounded feelings." Declan offered the financial olive branch with a heavy, put-upon sigh.
Sloane looked deep into the depths of his fuming, indifferent eyes. The police station's harsh fluorescent lights caught the cold, uncaring glint in his gaze. In that exact fraction of a second, the final layer of her youthful naivety stripped away. For three long years, she had foolishly believed that her quiet devotion, her endless sacrifices, and her unwavering labor could melt the ice around the heart of this arrogant man. She straightened her spine, pulling her shoulders back to their old military posture. The air around her grew frigid.
"I do not want a single cent of your dirty compensation. I want my immediate resignation from Prescott Technologies." Sloane delivered her rejection with razor-sharp finality.
Declan stepped back. His brows knitted together in deep disbelief. The concept of losing his most compliant worker bruised his fragile ego.
"Are you threatening me right now? You are weaponizing your job as a petty tantrum just because I failed to prioritize your safety over Valerie during a shooting?" Declan scoffed aloud, shaking his head in mock amusement.
Sloane stepped directly into his personal space. Her unblinking resolve forced him to hold his ground.
"I am not making an emotional threat. We are negotiating a clean, permanent severance of all professional ties. From this moment forward, the future survival of Prescott Technologies has nothing to do with me. Whatever sordid affair you choose to pursue with Valerie is beneath my concern." Sloane articulated every syllable with freezing precision.
Gideon stepped out from behind the front desk. Valerie clung to his side, seeking validation in his shadow.
"Fine. Since she wants to quit, let her walk away. It will not be long before she comes crawling back once the reality of unemployment strikes her." Declan turned his back on her, accepting her departure with cold dismissal.
Gideon snickered from the sidelines, leaning into Valerie’s shoulder.
"An orphan holding a degree from some obscure defense institution is unemployable without Declan’s corporate umbrella. Once she hits the real world, she will be waiting tables by the weekend." Gideon whispered smugly.
Valerie chuckled, hiding her satisfied smirk behind her manicured hand. Sloane ignored the pathetic display. She turned on her heel and strode out of the precinct.
The following morning, the early sun broke through the smog-choked skyline above the corporate headquarters of Prescott Technologies. Sloane strode through the glass atrium to pack her belongings. She carried an empty cardboard box tucked under her right arm. The moment she entered the research and development floor, a massive wave of distress washed over her dedicated drone research team. Engineers abandoned their dual-monitor workstations. Technicians clustered around her cubicle in a state of utter confusion. They were the only ones who truly understood that Sloane was the technical heartbeat behind the company's lucrative patent portfolio.
"Sloane, what will happen to the propulsion system project once you leave? Mr. Prescott will ruin the rollout!" The lead aerodynamic engineer pleaded, watching her pack her personalized drafting tools.
"Mr. Prescott will have someone else take over. Please return to your desks and focus on your tasks." Sloane offered them a curt nod, hoisting the box onto her hip.
She marched down the carpeted hallway and threw open the frosted glass door to the executive suite. Inside the massive office, Declan sat behind a mahogany desk. He stared down at her formal resignation letter with a scowl carved deeply into his sharp jawline.
"Are you playing these childish corporate games to elicit my sympathy? I thought you would have cooled off by now." Declan tossed the crisp document aside.
Sloane set her box on a leather chair. She looked at him with dry, mocking amusement.
"I have no interest in manipulating a man who casually throws his wife into the path of incoming gunfire." Sloane planted her hands flat on his desk, keeping her voice devoid of emotion.
Declan snatched a gold fountain pen from its marble holder. He snapped the cap off with a sharp click and slashed his signature across the release forms.
"From now on, hand over all classified technical proposals and proprietary projects to Chloe. Make sure the transition is flawless before you step off my property." Declan slid the paperwork back across the wood surface, ordering her dismissal.
Sloane took the document. She noticed Chloe sitting on the sofa near the window. Declan’s younger sister had recently graduated from an ordinary business college and wore a designer suit that looked far too mature for her petulant face.
An hour later, the transition meeting commenced inside the glass-walled conference room. The atmosphere dripped with Chloe’s unearned arrogance. Chloe sat at the head of the heavy slate table. She flipped through the complex, mathematically dense aerodynamic proposals with profound ignorance, skipping over crucial flight dynamic equations.
"I used to think your high-paying position was difficult, but this is laughably simple. You have merely been freeloading off my brother's hard-earned wealth for three years. Pack your junk, leave the premises, and never return to leech off our family charity." Chloe slapped the technical binder shut, tossing it across the polished table.
The project team members exchanged nervous glances. Sloane looked at the girl with unmasked pity.
"I have no desire to return here. You are the one who will soon be begging for charity once your sheer incompetence is exposed to the board of directors." Sloane adjusted her jacket, holding Chloe's furious gaze.
Incapable of enduring the calculated insult, Chloe shot up from her chair. Her face twisted into an ugly sneer. She lunged forward, raising her arm high above her head to strike Sloane across the face.
Before Chloe's palm could travel a single inch downwards, Sloane’s hand shot out like an iron vice. She clamped her fingers tightly around Chloe’s fragile wrist. Sloane squeezed. The relentless pressure ground the girl's wrist bones together until they groaned audibly under the strain.
"Let go of me! Let go right now!" Chloe screeched in blinding agony, trying to yank her arm free.
Sloane dragged the girl an inch closer across the tabletop. Her eyes burned with the lethal frost of an elite special forces operative. The temperature in the room seemed to plummet.
"I only ever tolerated your spoiled tantrums out of lingering affection for Declan. That affection is now stone dead. If you ever try to raise a hand to me again, you will lose the arm." Sloane issued her warning in a harrowing whisper.
She shoved Chloe backward with focused force. The girl collapsed heavily into her leather chair. Chloe clutched her throbbing wrist to her chest, trembling and whimpering in terrified silence. Sloane picked up her cardboard box. She walked out of the corporate tower for the very last time, leaving the stunned engineering team behind.
Days later, the rich aroma of roasted coffee beans and baked pastries drifted through a chic, upscale downtown cafe. Phoebe Delaney hosted an intimate celebration at a secluded corner booth. Sunlight fractured through the bay windows, illuminating the swirling dust motes above the marble tabletop. Phoebe stirred her oat milk latte with eager, frantic energy.
"Declan's meteoric corporate rise has been achieved by one thing alone. He spent three years shamelessly exploiting your unrecognized engineering genius in unmanned aerial vehicle design! I still cannot believe he failed to realize that without your brains, Prescott Technologies would never have gone public in the first place." Phoebe made her point loud and clear, jabbing her wooden stir stick toward her friend.
Sloane took a slow sip of her black espresso. A faint, satisfied smile played upon her lips. Walking away from that suffocating corporate environment had lifted a massive burden off her shoulders.
"I have been chasing you for this position ever since you secured your honorable discharge. Given your world-class expertise, I want you to officially take over the advanced technical division at Cobalt Technologies. You would be the lead engineer with full creative control over military contracts." Phoebe eagerly pushed a sleek, silver presentation folder across the marble table.
Sloane traced the embossed logo on the heavy cardstock. Her mind drifted back to her time at the Federal Defense University, where she had dominated global drone research competitions. Those early victories had led directly to her classified drone implementation projects within the armed forces. She had spent the last three years stifling her own immense potential just to prop up an ungrateful husband. The opportunity sitting directly before her was massive. She silently debated whether she wanted to return to active military service, diving back into the grueling covert operations of her past, or stay in the civilian sector to build an undeniable corporate empire alongside her fiercely loyal friend.
"I will give this proposal serious thought and weigh the offer tonight." Sloane promised softly, tapping her manicured fingernail against the thick dossier.
"Take all the time you need! Better you than some corporate suit taking up space." Phoebe clapped her hands together in sheer delight.
At that exact moment, Sloane's phone vibrated fiercely against the smooth surface of the marble tabletop. The sleek device buzzed loudly, interrupting the peaceful ambience of the chic cafe. The screen flashed with an incoming caller ID. It was Chloe. Taking a steadying breath, Sloane picked up the device and accepted the call.
Before Sloane could even utter a greeting, Chloe’s shrill, entitled screech burst through the receiver. The volume was deafening enough that Phoebe flinched back in her leather seat.
"If you are not dead yet, you need to drop everything and report to the central hospital right now! Have you forgotten that today is the day you are supposed to escort my mother to her ophthalmology checkup?" Chloe demanded, her furious tone echoing over the connection.
