The Unexpected Witness

A heavy, suffocating silence gripped the private dining alcove. Sloane's mocking proposition hung suspended in the stifling air, lingering uncomfortably over the remnants of the extravagant dinner banquet. She met Declan's tightening scowl without breaking eye contact. A dull, aching flicker of disappointment twisted painfully in her chest. It was agonizingly clear to her now. Even when she was standing directly in front of him, facing profound humiliation, he so easily dismissed his companions' vicious slanders as nothing more than harmless banter between close friends. He refused to defend her honor, choosing instead to protect the fragile egos of his wealthy peers.

"Stop it. They were just talking nonsense. You know they did not mean to hurt your feelings," Declan broke the silence, his brow furrowed in severe irritation as if she were a rebellious child ruining a perfectly pleasant evening.

Sloane scoffed darkly, the sound slicing through the tension. She took a deliberate step forward, her posture rigid with military precision. "What exactly would it take for the words of your inner circle to be considered a genuine insult? Tell me, Declan. Are you expecting me to kneel upon the polished floor, strike my own cheeks until they bleed, and beg for forgiveness for ever daring to marry you?" She paused, letting her cold gaze scrape over his tailored suit. "Do not forget the absolute truth of our past. I did not force my way into your life. You were the one who dropped to one knee in the pouring rain and begged for my hand in marriage three years ago."

The blunt reminder stripped the relaxed smugness from the room. Declan’s affluent buddies exchanged uneasy, shifting glances, suddenly fascinated by the rims of their champagne flutes. Beside him, Valerie Montgomery's complexion turned uncharacteristically pale, her pristine, sweet smile faltering under the heavy weight of Sloane's unyielding stare.

A flash of dark displeasure crossed Declan's eyes. He reached out swiftly, attempting to seize her wrist to force her into submission. "Let's not do this here. Let's stop making a scene and talk calmly at home."

Sloane violently tore herself from his grip before his fingers could secure their hold on her sleeve. She took a step back, dusting off her jacket as if he carried a communicable disease. "No. We will say every single thing right here in the open. Frankly, observing the two of you tonight, I must admit that you and Valerie make a truly immaculate match. You have a faithless, spineless cheater neatly paired with a shameless, grasping mistress. I wish the two of you an eternity of misery together."

The sheer audacity of her statement struck the table like a physical blow. The remaining color drained completely from Declan's face, leaving him looking sickly and hollow. Valerie clamped a hand over her mouth, appearing deathly pale.

Unable to bear seeing his friend insulted, Declan’s most loyal sycophant, Gideon Fletcher, leaped to his feet. His heavy wooden chair knocked sharply against the floral wallpaper. He leveled a furious scowl at Sloane. "Sloane, what gives you the right to speak ill of Valerie? Who do you think you are? In what universe do you think you can even compare to a woman of her pedigree? You are nothing more than an uncultured orphan holding a worthless piece of paper from a third-rate diploma mill. What makes you think Declan should love a charity case over someone brilliant like Valerie?"

"What a massive load of utter garbage!" Phoebe exploded in blind rage, storming forward and aggressively shoving her way past a serving cart. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Gideon’s chest. "Keep your filthy mouth shut about things you know nothing about! For your information, Sloane is a proud graduate of the highly prestigious Federal Defense University!"

The fierce declaration hung over the table for a stunned second. Then, a massive chorus of uproarious laughter erupted from the circle of scions. The young men clapped the mahogany wood, wiping tears of mirth from their eyes at the sheer, desperate absurdity of the claim.

Valerie Montgomery’s pale complexion recovered rapidly. She smiled right at Sloane, exuding a mask of patronizing pity meant to belittle and destroy. "If you are going to brag in front of high society, you should back it up openly with facts. Falsely claiming alumni status at the nation’s most secretive and elite institution will only turn you into an embarrassing clown. No one here is dense enough to believe you."

Phoebe ground her teeth together, her fists balled tightly at her sides. "Why would there be any need to lie about this? You can easily verify every single detail on the federal academic registry website right now!"

Sloane raised a slender hand, calmly halting Phoebe’s furious tirade. Her cool, unshaken gaze remained securely locked onto Valerie's smug face, entirely unfazed by the mocking laughter echoing around them. "I do not need you or anyone else at this table to judge or validate my educational background."

Valerie frowned sharply at that response. Uneasy irritation prickled beneath her skin. *Clearly, she has just been thoroughly exposed for falsely claiming her qualifications. She should be feeling overwhelming guilt and public embarrassment. Why does she seem so unabashedly calm about it? Her terrifyingly steady attitude is deeply unsettling.*

Just at that precise, tense moment, Valerie caught sight of a few figures approaching down the main corridor. They looked as though they were about to pass directly by their open private room. Among them, Valerie recognized one deeply distinguished individual. Her eyes lit up instantly with bright, opportunistic malice. Here was her chance to thoroughly crush Sloane beneath the crushing weight of undeniable academic authority.

"Professor Aldridge!" Valerie called out eagerly, rising from her seat and sweeping forward into the corridor. "It has been a while. Are you also here for a meal this evening? What a wonderful coincidence."

Wallace Aldridge, the venerable, world-renowned scholar and dean of engineering at the Federal Defense University, paused his stride. He recognized the heiress from various high-society galas. "Oh, it is you, Miss Montgomery. Yes, it has been quite a while."

Valerie gestured widely toward the alcove, her smirk growing sharper. "Professor, you are a senior dean at the Federal Defense University. Interestingly enough, someone at our table boldly claims to be a graduate from your prestigious halls. I wonder if you might identify whether the woman standing right before us is indeed an alumna or just a delusional fraud."

The others around the table, anticipating a brutal, entertaining spectacle, chimed in with eager cruelty.

"Exactly!" Gideon jeered. "Sloane, did you not just claim to be a secret genius? You must surely recognize your own professors!"

Sloane adjusted the cuffs of her dark blazer with deliberate slowness. With a leisurely, powerful stride, she moved forward into the hallway. "Professor Aldridge, it has been a while."

The scions scoffed loudly behind her.

"Wow! She really knows how to put on a theatrical show!"

"She genuinely sees herself as a graduate from the academy, doesn't she?"

"How could Professor Aldridge possibly know a beggar like her?"

The chorus of belittling and mocking words echoed stubbornly around the lavish space, but they came to a dead, abrupt halt. The smug smirks adorning the table literally withered into ash. Because, right before their disbelieving eyes, Professor Aldridge’s weathered face lit up with profound warmth. Stepping straight past Valerie as though the heiress were invisible, the academic legend reached out and affectionately patted Sloane’s shoulder.

"Sloane? By all the heavens, I did not expect to see you here today! It has been several long years since we last met," Wallace said, his eyes practically crinkling with genuine joy.

"That is right. It has been quite a few years indeed," Sloane responded smoothly. "How have you been keeping the research labs running?"

"Everything is fine, though we miss your brilliant mind!" Wallace said with a soft sigh. "I heard about the devastating matter regarding your parents, my dear. You have my deepest condolences."

"Thank you, Professor," Sloane replied softly.

Those who had eagerly planned to enjoy the spectacle were now frozen, their faces twisted into masks of grotesque shock. Valerie’s jaw dropped. Her eyes widened in panic as she stared at the interaction.

"Professor Aldridge... d-do you really know her?" Valerie whispered.

Wallace frowned at the heiress's tone. "Of course I know her. I used to teach her directly. Frankly, how could anyone at the academy not know her? Sloane is the single most brilliant science prodigy to ever pass through our hallowed halls. Her initial enrollment sparked fierce bidding wars among the country's top defense departments! They fought over her intellect."

The color drained from Valerie’s face. The patronizing trap she had meticulously set had backfired catastrophically, snapping shut on her own neck. Just a moment ago, she confidently dismissed Sloane as a pathetic clown. Now, standing before the academic royalty, Valerie realized she had become the undeniable fool.

Declan remained completely paralyzed by his chair. An icy sensation crept deeply into his chest. He had never known a single detail about these incredible accolades. Sloane had never mentioned her genius to him. At that exact moment, he felt a sheer, chilling sense of total unfamiliarity with the woman who had shared his bed for three years.

Before the stunned silence could truly break, a deep, velvety male voice carrying a dark undercurrent of lethal menace echoed from the corridor just behind Professor Aldridge. "Professor Aldridge, is this one of your prized students?"

The cadence of the voice snapped everyone harshly back to reality. Wallace turned respectfully backward to introduce his powerful dining companion. "Yes, indeed. Everyone, allow me to introduce my host. This is Killian Vancroft, the sovereign of the Vancroft Group. Mr. Vancroft, this is my student, Sloane Callahan."

The moment the terrifying name dropped, the rich scions' expressions morphed significantly. Eagerness and deep, avaricious excitement flared wildly in their eyes. With the former head of the Vancroft family deceased, Killian was now the ruthless, undisputed kingpin of the massive corporate empire. Establishing a connection with this untouchable titan could yield immeasurable benefits.

"Hello, Miss Callahan." Killian extended his pale, elegantly sculpted hand with impeccable politeness.

As Sloane reached out to grasp his hand, her sharp eyes recognized him. This was the mysterious, dangerous man she had observed near the entrance of the funeral parlor in the pouring rain. Now, stripped of his protective umbrella, his features were carved sharply in the light. He possessed slicked-back raven hair, a high-bridged nose, and profound black eyes that resembled an abyss.

Beneath his pristine, aristocratic veneer, Sloane's combat-honed instincts screamed an immediate, visceral warning. As she felt the cool, distinct knuckles of his hand, she sensed terrible danger. Those slender, beautiful fingers gripping hers felt capable of snapping human bone without a shred of hesitation. It felt like holding a volatile, lethal weapon.

Killian offered a faint, cryptic smile. "A pleasure, Miss Callahan."

"Hello, Mr. Vancroft," she replied calmly, pulling back efficiently.

The surrounding elites edged closer, terribly eager to grovel and engage in conversation with Killian. Yet, the titan seemingly lacked interest in anyone else present. He turned cleanly toward the dean. "Professor Aldridge, I believe our secluded private dining suite is prepared. Let us head there first."

Wallace nodded warmly, excusing himself to follow Killian deeply into the private corridors.

The very moment the imposing titan departed, the unbearable tension shattered. Declan rounded abruptly on Sloane. His voice was incredibly tight with thick, defensive rage. "Why did you deliberately conceal your prestigious academic pedigree from me? Why didn't you tell me you were a prodigy?"

Sloane met his aggressive glare with absolute, frigid indifference. "Why would a man who cared so incredibly little about my family's ultimate sacrifice ever care about a few shiny academic accolades from my past? You never cared to ask. So, does it even matter to you, Declan?"

Before Declan could fire a furious retort, a concussive, deafening gunshot brutally ripped through the restaurant's elegant atmosphere.

*BANG!*

A stray, lethal bullet tore savagely through the air, heading straight toward the corridor where Killian had just vanished. High above, the magnificent crystal chandeliers violently shattered into a terrifying rain of razor-sharp shards.

Mass hysteria erupted across the hall in a fraction of a second. Screams filled the smoke-tinged air as sharply dressed patrons threw themselves desperately beneath marble tables, abandoning all pretense of dignity in the face of brutal death.

Amidst the violent, panicked stampede of thrashing bodies, a sudden, brutal force shoved Sloane violently from behind. She was knocked completely off balance, tumbling fast. Her body crashed painfully against the unyielding, cruel edge of a mahogany credenza. A terrible gasp ripped outward from her burning lungs, and she collapsed hard onto the polished wood floor.

Struggling to draw a desperate breath, Sloane looked up from the glass-strewn floor. The breath instantly froze solid inside her dry throat.

Declan had grabbed Valerie Montgomery entirely. He aggressively scooped his first love securely into his strong arms, spinning around to use his own broad, muscular back to bravely shield her. He ducked securely behind a thick ornamental partition, guaranteeing Valerie remained flawlessly unscathed.

The agonizing, horrifying reality crashed violently over Sloane like a tidal wave of ice. In the literal face of mortal danger, her own legal husband had purposefully, forcefully shoved his own wife into the open, deadly line of fire solely to ensure his mistress's safety.

From across the blood-spattered, broken dining room, Declan’s wide eyes briefly caught Sloane’s. He saw her lying grounded amidst the dangerous, shattered glass. A fleeting, nervous pang of guilt sharply twisted his handsome features. Yet, he immediately comforted himself. *Sloane is immensely resilient. She is a soldier. She will be absolutely fine. A few sweet, gentle words later tonight will surely mend the rift.*

However, as his eyes desperately locked onto her pale face, the thick blood in Declan’s veins turned rapidly to liquid nitrogen. A terrifying dread settled into his chest.

Reading the silent, unhurried, perfectly articulated movement of Sloane’s pale lips, he saw the final words formed precisely over the chaos.

*Declan, I don't want you anymore.*
