My jaw tightened so hard it hurt, but I didn’t back down. I forced the word out.

“No.”

Her head snapped toward me, eyes flashing in warning. “Excuse me?”

“I said no,” I repeated, straighter this time, meeting her glare head-on. “I’m not marking her.”

Her whole posture sharpened, spine rigid as if I’d just committed some kind of betrayal.
