Tainted Sanctuary

POV: Valerie Thorne.

The bruising pressure of Tristan's long fingers against my jawline sent sharp, agonizing throbs straight through my skull. My bone ached under his relentless grip. The sheer physical strength of his hand forces my chin upward, stretching my neck at a painful angle. His mint-scented breath washed over my skin, carrying the freezing chill of his unspoken threats. Despite the stinging pain radiating from my jaw all the way down to my collarbone, I refused to let my eyes drop. I kept my gaze locked squarely with his dark, stormy irises. The heavy silence in the bedroom thickened, suffocating the space standing between us.

I needed him to stay. I knew convincing my husband to abandon Chloe Mercer for a single night was nearly an impossible task. The woman only had to snap her fingers to send him running across the city. Yet, the memory of Grandpa Arthur’s weathered, kind face gave me the sudden strength to push past my own humiliation. Tomorrow was his funeral. I needed the Vance heir by my side to honor the only man in this ruthless family who had ever shielded me.

"I agree to a divorce, but I have my conditions. Stay here tonight and accompany me throughout Grandpa’s funeral tomorrow as my husband. The moment the burial ends, I will sign the divorce papers without another word." I forced my voice to remain steady, refusing to let the tremor in my chest bleed into my tone.

Tristan’s obsidian eyes flickered under the dim lighting. The heavy tension in the air shifted, replaced by a dark, cutting ridicule that swam in the depths of his gaze. He slowly released my jaw. His rough fingertips dragged down the delicate side of my neck before falling away, leaving a lingering, phantom cold on my skin. He leaned in closer, invading my personal space until his broad chest almost pressed against mine. His lips brushed against the sensitive shell of my ear, sending a shiver down my spine.

"Please me. All talk and no action will get you nowhere, Valerie." His deep baritone murmured in the quiet room.

I stood frozen on the thick bedroom carpet. The raw challenge hung between us like a dangerous dare. He was openly mocking me. He wanted to see exactly how far I would stoop, how much of my pride I was willing to shred for a single night of his hollow presence.

Swallowing my deep humiliation, I realized I had to play his twisted game. I was desperate to buy one final shred of dignity for the grandfather who had protected my place in this house. I took a deliberate step closer. My legs shook slightly, but I forced my arms to reach out. I wrapped my trembling arms awkwardly around his narrow waist. Given the stark difference in our height, I had to press my face straight against his solid chest. I could hear the steady, rhythmic thud of his heart beneath his fine shirt.

I traced my palms downward. The air around us felt dense, charged with a degrading edge. My fingers slid down the rigid lines of his torso, eventually reaching the cold metal buckle of his expensive belt. I prepared to swallow the very last of my shame, determined to pay whatever price he demanded of me tonight.

My fingertips barely grazed the genuine leather before his large hand snapped around my wrist.

His grip felt like an iron handcuff locking around my fragile bones. The sudden, harsh movement jarred my shoulder. I snapped my head up, my wide eyes meeting his downward stare. The dark depths of his eyes were impenetrable, shadowed with a sudden, freezing disgust. He looked down at me as if my touch had left a layer of filthy grime on his clothes.

"That’s enough." He spoke the harsh words with chilling finality.

He shoved my hands away, breaking the physical contact without a second thought. I stumbled backward, my bare feet sinking into the plush carpet to catch my balance. The sudden rejection left me stunned, a hollow, gaping ache blooming in the center of my chest.

I braced myself for his swift departure. I expected him to grab his tailored coat, storm out of the master suite, and disappear into the rainy night. Instead, he turned his broad back on me. He walked casually over to the edge of the mattress, picked up his charcoal grey silk pajama trousers, and smoothly stepped into them. The expensive silk slid over his long legs with a soft rustle in the quiet room.

The heavy storm outside battered the French windows. Rain lashed against the thick glass like a relentless barrage of tiny stones. Thunder rumbled in the distance, vibrating through the solid floorboards beneath my feet. I stood rooted to my spot, staring at his broad shoulders as he fastened the drawstring of his sleepwear.

Is he actually staying?

The silent question pierced my tired chest, bringing a sharp, confusing pang of relief. He was getting ready for bed. The battle was degrading, but I had won the war. He would remain in the house. He would stand directly beside me at the funeral tomorrow. The vicious media vultures wouldn't be able to whisper about the estranged Vance heir abandoning his grieving wife on such a tragic day.

But before that hollow victory could take a firm root in my heart, a frail, trembling female voice drifted up through the slight opening of the balcony doors. The pitiful sound managed to cut straight through the roaring downpour outside.

"Tristan..."

The delicate pitch of that single word was laced with a pathetic vulnerability that made every hair on my arms stand up.

Tristan froze in his tracks. The casual, relaxed grace of his posture vanished within a fraction of a second. The chilling indifference he had shown me evaporated, replaced by a rigid, electric alertness. He did not hesitate to seek the source. He spun around and rushed straight out onto the wide balcony, stepping out into the misting rain.

He stared down into the heavy darkness of the courtyard. I saw his broad shoulders tense up instantly. He cursed under his breath, a sharp hiss of profanity that carried back into the bedroom.

He stormed back inside, snatched his heavy dark overcoat from the velvet armchair, and tore out of the bedroom. The door slammed hard against the wall with a deafening crash. I heard his heavy, frantic footfalls racing down the grand marble staircase, echoing loudly through the empty halls of the luxury villa.

My legs moved on their own accord. I walked out onto the cold balcony, the chilly night wind whipping my dark hair around my face. The icy rain misted against my pale skin, washing away the lingering warmth of the bedroom. I leaned over the sleek glass railing and looked down straight at the massive driveway below.

The chaotic scene unfolding in the courtyard painted a crystal-clear picture of my miserable existence.

Chloe Mercer stood under the torrential downpour. The merciless rain soaked her thin dress, making the wet fabric cling to her fragile frame. She looked exactly like a shattered porcelain doll abandoned in the mud. She was weeping loudly, her frail shoulders hitching with heavy sobs that were visible even from the second floor.

I watched Tristan reach her in mere seconds. He moved with a frantic desperation I had never once witnessed in our entire marriage. He ignored the freezing rain ruining his clothes. He threw his large overcoat around her shuddering frame, enveloping her in his solid warmth. He pulled her hard into his chest with a desperate force, shielding her tiny body from the raging storm. Chloe wrapped her pale arms tightly around his waist, burying her wet face into his shirt, clinging to him like a helpless drowning victim grasping a lifeline.

Standing high above them on that freezing balcony, a pathetic clarity solidified in my racing mind. The deep knot in my stomach turned into cold, suffocating lead.

My two long years of dutiful devotion, my sacred marriage vows, my silent suffering under his mother's glare, the endless nights I waited up for him in this empty house—all of it meant absolutely nothing. Two years of playing the perfect, quiet wife evaporated into thin air the moment this outsider shed a single, pathetic tear.

He guided her toward the front entrance, keeping his strong arm securely anchored around her tiny waist.

I turned away from the railing, the damp cold seeping deep into my weary bones. I walked out of the master suite and positioned myself at the exact head of the second-floor stairs. My bare feet rooted firmly into the thick carpet fibers. The sheer injustice of the situation set my blood on burning fire. I physically blocked the top of the staircase, staring down blankly at the grand foyer.

Tristan ascended the long steps, half-carrying a whimpering Chloe. Water dripped steadily from their soaked clothes, leaving dark, messy puddles on the pristine marble steps.

He stopped a few steps below my imposing position. The tender warmth he showed his fragile lover vanished the second his dark eyes met mine.

"Get out of the way!" He snapped the harsh command with raw distaste.

Chloe whimpered louder in his arms, shrinking against his side as if my mere presence terrified her delicate senses.

My chest burned with a raging, righteous fury. I refused to budge an inch. I glared down at the towering man who was legally bound to be my faithful partner.

"Tristan, back when we married, you swore a solemn oath to Grandpa Arthur. You stood in his study and promised that you would never allow Chloe Mercer to set foot inside this house as long as I lived here." I kept my voice loud and unwavering.

He had already destroyed the fragile foundation of my marriage. He had already stripped me of my personal pride. But this grand house was the only true sanctuary I still possessed. It was the only isolated place where I did not have to watch them flaunt their toxic romance. Now, he was bringing his beloved mistress right past the threshold, dragging his blatant betrayal into the one remaining space I called my own.

"Hah!" Tristan sneered aloud.

He did not show a single ounce of genuine guilt regarding his broken promise to the deceased old man. Instead, he released his tight hold on Chloe just enough to raise his free arm. Without a second of hesitation, he ruthlessly shoved my right shoulder.

The brutal force of his physical push threw me severely off balance. I stumbled sideways, my shoulder slamming hard against the decorated wall of the main corridor. Pain flared hot through my arm, but it paled in vast comparison to the stinging humiliation of his brutal action. I was cast aside like a piece of worthless furniture blocking his precious path.

"You think far too highly of yourself, Valerie." His cruel, mocking voice echoed in the hallway.

He did not bother to look back to see if I was injured. He simply bypassed my trembling form, adjusted his protective grip on Chloe, and swept her directly toward the master guest room at the far end of the hall.

The heavy oak door of the guest room clicked shut. I stood alone in the dark corridor, rubbing my aching shoulder, listening closely to the muffled sounds of frantic movement echoing inside.

Tonight was destined to be a long, restless nightmare.

I forced my sore feet to move along the carpet, slowly walking toward the half-open grand door of the guest room. The dim, warm light from inside spilled onto the hallway floor. I stood perfectly rigid in the doorway, feeling exactly like an unwelcome ghost haunting my own home.

Inside the large suite, the scene was chaotic. Chloe sat on the edge of the large mattress, shaking uncontrollably beneath a heavy pile of thick, luxury blankets. The freezing downpour had already induced a severe, punishing fever. Her pale, tear-stained cheeks were flushed with an unhealthy red hue, and her teeth chattered audibly in the quiet room.

Tristan leaned anxiously over the edge of the mattress. His handsome profile was etched with pure, undeniable panic and frantic tenderness. He quickly fetched a silver basin of warm water from the adjoining bathroom sink. Plunging fresh white towels into the warm water, he wrung them out and began carefully sponging down her delicate neck, her pale wrists, and her burning forehead. His touch was incredibly gentle, mapping the fine contours of her face with a terrified reverence.

He slowly turned his head to grab another dry towel and caught sight of me standing frozen in the silent doorway.

The visible panic in his dark eyes instantly morphed into a harsh, unforgiving glare. His irises glinted like frozen daggers under the soft lamplight. Seeing me standing there in the shadows irritated his foul mood beyond measure.

"Go back to the Vance ancestral home right now! Chloe won't be able to go anywhere tonight in her current state, and your presence will only agitate her." He barked the cruel order without ever leaving Chloe's side.

I stared at his hard face, my exhausted mind struggling to process the sheer, unbridled audacity of his ridiculous demand. He was telling me, his legally wedded wife, to pack my personal things and leave my own home in the dead of night. He wanted me to drive miles across the flooded city alone, navigating a dangerous midnight storm with slick roads and terrible visibility. He was perfectly willing to risk my physical safety just so his precious mistress could rest undisturbed in my own house.

A bitter, acidic bile rose fast in the back of my dry throat. I swallowed it down hard, forcing my spine hook-straight. I refused to surrender the very last shred of my bruised dignity.

"I will return to my bedroom. It is neither appropriate nor respectful to disturb the family home at this hour." I stated the words with a chilling, deadpan calm.

Before he could unleash another cruel barrage of verbal insults, I turned my back on his furious, burning glare. I stepped away from the doorframe, retreating into the dimly lit, silent corridor. The heavy shadows of the hallway wrapped around me, masking the slight, pathetic tremble in my hands.

As I began moving slowly toward the empty master bedroom, a sharp, sudden noise shattered the quiet ground floor. The heavy front door downstairs slammed shut. Hurried, wet footsteps instantly began ascending the steep wooden stairs, slapping loudly against the polished steps.

I stopped dead in my tracks, my heavy heart skipping a beat.

A tall figure rounded the sharp corner of the staircase, stopping right at the top of the landing.

Dr. Nolan Bryce halted, breathing heavily. He looked like he had been dragged directly out of a deep sleep and thrown straight into a raging hurricane. The esteemed family doctor was dressed haphazardly in a loose set of black silk pajamas. He was barefoot, leaving messy wet footprints on the floorboards. The torrential rain outside had soaked his dark clothes all the way through to the fabric, sticking the silk firmly against his skin. Strands of wet hair clung untidily to his forehead.

Despite his chaotic, messy appearance, his knuckles were stark white as he clutched a heavy leather medical satchel tightly in his right hand, having rushed wildly across the dangerous city at Tristan's frantic summons.
