Prologue

The heavy, pulsating bass of the nightclub thrummed straight through the sticky floorboards, vibrating up Kaelen’s calves and settling deep within the hollow cavity of her chest. Blinding neon strobe lights sliced through the hazy, smoke-filled air, painting the writhing bodies on the crowded dance floor in sudden, chaotic flashes of electric blue and magenta. It was a suffocating sea of slick sweat, expensive cologne, and palpable desperation. The energy inside the venue was at an absolute peak, a deafening roar of synthetic music and shouting voices. Yet, tucked away in the shadowy seclusion of a corner booth, Kaelen sat anchored in place like a ghost haunting her own miserable life.

She looked every bit the part of a predator on the prowl. Kaelen was adorned in a bold, form-fitting beige dress that clung mercilessly to every curve of her petite frame. The expensive fabric was tight enough to feel like a second skin, accentuating her hips and leaving her shoulders completely bare to the cool air-conditioning of the club. A striking, flawless coat of crimson lipstick painted her mouth, completing the illusion. To any man walking past their secluded corner, she radiated the vibrant, irresistible energy of a seductress waiting to be claimed. But her dark eyes betrayed the meticulous facade. Beneath the heavy lashes and flawless makeup, her gaze was hollow, carrying a profound, quiet sorrow that stood in stark contrast to her vibrant external appearance. The deafening music could not mask the unmistakable devastation lingering in her stare.

Tessa leaned aggressively across the sticky high-top table, her voice straining to cut through the oppressive volume of the club. She pointed a manicured finger toward a loud group of men hovering by the crowded bar.

“Look at the guy in the charcoal shirt, Kaelen. He has been staring at you for twenty minutes. Just let him buy you a drink! You cannot just sit here brooding all night,” Tessa urged, her tone laced with an exasperated but fiercely caring edge.

Kaelen did not even blink at the suggestion. She traced the rim of her highball glass with a numb fingertip, watching the cold condensation drip slowly onto the damp cardboard coaster. She had spent the better part of the evening ignoring her fiercely loyal friend’s relentless attempts to distract her from her own misery. Tessa had tried pointing out at least a dozen men, but Kaelen’s mind remained trapped in a relentless loop of painful memories.

Tessa let out a sharp sigh, reaching over to squeeze Kaelen’s bare arm. “Kaelen, you have to let him go. You have to finally let your ex-husband go.”

The words pierced straight through the rhythmic thumping of the trance music, striking a devastating blow to Kaelen’s chest. The unspoken weight of her shattered marriage hung heavily between them, a dark anchor pulling her down into a familiar abyss. She forced her stiff facial muscles to work, pulling her crimson lips into a practiced, heartbreakingly sad signature smile. It was a smile that never quite reached her dark eyes.

“He already left me, Tessa. Since he has already left me, is there anything more I can do now?” Kaelen replied, her voice smooth but hollow.

Desperate to mask the sudden, sharp spike of inner turmoil tearing at her throat, Kaelen lifted the heavy crystal glass to her lips. She forcefully chugged the remainder of her drink, completely draining the amber liquid in two massive, burning swallows. The harsh liquor burned an unforgiving trail down her throat, but she welcomed the stinging distraction. She slammed the empty glass onto the table with a sharp clink.

Feigning a sudden, uncharacteristic burst of cheerful energy, Kaelen shot to her feet and grabbed Tessa by the hand.

“Come on! Let’s go and burn the dance floor!” Kaelen shouted, her voice laced with forced enthusiasm.

Tessa could not help rolling her eyes at the painfully obvious failed attempt at cheer, but she allowed herself to be dragged away from the safety of the booth and directly toward the center of the pulsating, crowded dance floor.

The air grew significantly hotter as they merged with the writhing mass of bodies. The in-house DJ transitioned smoothly into a heavy, rhythmic trance track, cranking the volume until the sound physically shook the walls. Kaelen closed her eyes, letting the darkness swallow her vision. She swayed her hips to the heavy rhythm, desperately trying to let the heavy trance beats wash over her. With every punishing thump of the bass, she fought to drown out the agonizing memories of her past. She wanted the music to scrub her mind clean, to deafen the lingering echoes of a love that had burned her to ash. For a few fleeting, glorious seconds, the strategy seemed to work. The physical exertion of dancing and the numbing burn of alcohol provided a momentary, blissful escape.

Then, the music unexpectedly died out.

It was not a gradual fade or a planned drop in the track. The deafening music cut off with an abrupt, jarring squeal of electrical feedback, plunging the massive venue into a sudden, tense silence. The writhing crowd froze in place, utterly disoriented by the harsh loss of the beat. The heavy, thumping bass was quickly replaced by the chaotic sounds of angry, overlapping voices.

Kaelen opened her eyes, her brow furrowing in confusion. She looked over at Tessa, seeing the exact same bewildered expression mirrored on her friend’s face. The angry shouting was coming from somewhere near the bar counter. The club featured a unique architectural design, boasting a sunken lower-level bar area that sat well beneath the main dance floor, separated by a thick glass railing. The chaotic noise was echoing up from that pit.

A sharp, violent crash of breaking glass rang out through the tense silence, followed immediately by loud, brutal grunts of intense physical exertion.

A wave of curious club-goers immediately surged forward, pushing and shoving past Kaelen to reach the glass railing and witness the commotion unfolding below. An inexplicable, suffocating wave of dread suddenly washed over Kaelen’s entire body. The fine hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and a cold sweat broke out across her palms. Her primal instincts screamed at her to turn around and leave the building immediately, a warning system going on high alert for reasons she could not yet comprehend.

Despite the creeping fear, her feet moved forward on their own accord. She navigated the maze of confused patrons, walking briskly toward the edge with Tessa trailing closely behind her. The overlapping shouts grew louder, more distinct. The sickening, wet sound of a heavy fist colliding with flesh and bone echoed up from the sunken floor.

Kaelen reached the thick glass railing and clamped her hands onto the cool metal. Cautiously approaching the edge, she peered down into the lower level.

The sunken bar was a terrifying scene of unrestrained violence. High-top stools were violently overturned, and shattered liquor bottles littered the polished floorboards. In the dead center of the wreckage, a horrifying display of brutality was actively unfolding. A tall, broad-shouldered man was crouched over a battered, bloody figure pinned to the floor. The attacker’s broad back faced the balcony, his dark shirt pulling taut against the massive, coiled muscles of his shoulders as he moved with lethal intent.

The attacker brutally clutched the defeated man’s collar in one massive fist, hauling the limp torso upward just to land another vicious, unrelenting punch directly into the man's bloody face. The sickening crunch of the impact made Kaelen’s eyelids flutter uncontrollably, a physical reaction to the sheer brutality on display. The victim offered zero resistance, his arms flopping uselessly to his sides as the attacker ruthlessly drew his heavy fist back to strike again.

Kaelen’s heart plummeted straight into her stomach. A cold, paralyzing knot of terror formed in her throat.

Suddenly, the attacker stopped throwing punches. He hauled the bleeding man upward by the lapels and unleashed a furious, ear-splitting roar that violently ripped through the sudden quiet of the club.

“Son of a bitch, you dare! SHE IS MY WIFE!”

Kaelen gasped loudly, her breath hitching painfully in her throat. The air vanished from her lungs in an instant. The deep, murderous timber of that voice slammed into her chest like a physical blow. She was paralyzingly familiar with that exact voice. She knew the sheer, unadulterated anger behind it intimately. Two long years of painful separation had done absolutely nothing to erase the terrifying resonance of his rage from her memory.

Down below, the violent man slowly released his iron grip on the bloody collar, letting his unconscious victim drop back against the hard floor with a dull, heavy thud. The wild, unhinged energy radiating from his broad shoulders seemed to shift focus. He slowly looked up from his victim, tilting his head toward the upper balcony.

A burning, intense gaze pierced right through the dim lighting of the club. The furious brown eyes bypassed the dozens of gawking spectators leaning over the railing and instantly locked directly onto Kaelen’s wide, terrified dark orbs.

It was Voktor.

The unhinged, wild rage swirling in his dark gaze completely shattered whatever fragile, patched-together composure Kaelen had managed to build over the last two years. The sheer intensity of his stare was paralyzing, pinning her to the spot like a deer caught in the headlights of a speeding truck. The promised wrath burning in those familiar brown eyes offered no mercy, no hesitation.

She began trembling so violently that her knees nearly buckled beneath her. She swayed dangerously backward, her high heels slipping against the floor. She almost collapsed entirely into Tessa’s confused arms. Tessa grabbed Kaelen’s waist to steady her, sporting a horrid expression of shock as she too realized exactly who was standing in the pit below them.

Driven purely by a primal instinct for survival and the desperate need to escape his promised wrath before it could engulf her, Kaelen abruptly turned on her heel and fled the railing.

She ran blindly. She shoved her way through the thick maze of confused patrons, her sharp elbows digging into ribs and shoulders as she forced a path toward the back of the venue. Angry curses and shouts followed in her wake, but she did not care. Her chest heaved painfully, pulling in ragged, shallow breaths. The high heels of her shoes clicked frantically against the hard floorboards as she sprinted without a clear destination in mind. Her instinct simply told her to run, and she obeyed without caring for the direction she was going.

She spotted the illuminated sign for the restrooms down a narrow, shadowed corridor. Throwing her body weight against the heavy wooden door of the women’s restroom, she stumbled desperately inside and let the door swing shut behind her, cutting off the noise of the club.

The restroom was starkly lit with harsh, unforgiving fluorescent bulbs. Kaelen rushed to the long row of porcelain sinks and gripped the smooth edges with white-knuckled fingers. She stared directly into the expansive mirror mounted above the basin, absolutely horrified by the reflection staring back at her.

The vibrant, confident seductress from the corner booth had completely vanished. In her place stood a tear-stained, violently shaking woman who looked entirely broken. Dark mascara ran in faint, messy lines beneath her wide eyes, and her chest rose and fell in rapid, erratic spasms. She did not even realize she had been crying until she saw the wet streaks ruining her makeup.

A pathetic, desperate whimper clawed its way up her tight throat. Kaelen quickly clamped her trembling hands tightly over her mouth to muffle her own pathetic whimpers, terrified that he might hear her. She reached out with a violently shaking hand and cranked the water faucet on, hoping the sound of the rushing water would drown out her heavy breathing. She huddled near the sink, praying to whatever higher power would listen that he had lost sight of her in the crowded club.

Suddenly, her fragile sanctuary was violently violated.

The heavy restroom door was shoved open with terrifying force. Another woman, who had been fixing her makeup near the entrance stalls, turned around and shrieked at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing shrilly off the tiled walls.

“Who the fuck are you? This is the women’s restroom, you asshole!”

Before Kaelen’s panicked mind could even comprehend the new commotion or process who the screaming girl was cursing at, a massive, unyielding hand clamped down hard on her bare forearm.

Kaelen froze in sheer terror. The temperature in the room seemed to plummet instantly.

A brutal force violently yanked her forearm backward, dragging her away from the sink and spinning her around. She stumbled, her heels scraping awkwardly against the slick tiles, before coming face-to-chest with a solid wall of tense muscle.

Voktor had bypassed the club’s security entirely and followed her straight inside the women's restroom.

Kaelen tilted her head up, her breath catching in her throat. His furious brown eyes immediately swept critically over her from head to toe. The intense, burning gaze took in the bare expanse of her exposed shoulders, the deep plunge of her neckline, and the tight, clinging fabric that accentuated her hips. The scowl marring his handsome features visibly deepened into an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust at the sight of her revealing beige dress.

His broad chest heaved with exertion. His nostrils flared wildly like a raging bull preparing to charge. The heavy scent of copper blood and dark cologne rolled off his skin, suffocating her senses and trapping her in his overwhelming presence.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

The demand was not a shout. It was a lethal, low growl that reverberated off the tiled walls, vibrating with a terrifying promise of impending violence.

Kaelen parted her trembling lips, but her throat was locked tight. No sound emerged.

Before she could even force her lungs to pull in enough air to form a response, Voktor lunged forward. He aggressively grabbed her roughly by both forearms. His iron grip dug deep into her soft flesh, bruising the muscle beneath her skin. Kaelen flinched hard, a sharp gasp of genuine pain slipping through her teeth. He gave her a harsh shake, dragging her up onto her toes so her face was mere inches from his contorted features.

“What the hell are you wearing?” he yelled, his furious voice exploding in the confined space and echoing sharply off the porcelain tiles. The sheer volume of his rage sent the other woman scrambling out of the restroom in pure terror, leaving Kaelen entirely alone with him.

Tears rapidly spilled over Kaelen’s lower lashes, leaving hot, wet trails down her flushed cheeks. The burning pain in her forearms radiated straight up to her shoulders as she struggled uselessly against his unbreakable hold.

“Please…” she gulped, her voice breaking in absolute fear. It was a frail, trembling whisper against the hurricane of his rage. “Please, you are hurting me.”

She stood there, physically trapped and trembling uncontrollably in his harsh, punishing grip. Voktor did not loosen his hold for a single second. His fingers dug deeper into her skin, anchoring her in place as his furious gaze bored directly into her soul. Kaelen’s mind instantly spiraled into complete chaos. The physical pain was nothing compared to the psychological torment ripping through her mind. She was left entirely paralyzed in his brutal grasp, completely unsure whether she should feel a twisted, desperate sense of happiness to finally see the man she still loved after two long, agonizing years of absolute absence, or if she should be utterly terrified of his familiar, terrifying anger that now threatened to consume her entirely.
