A Taste of Her Absence
Morning light spilled across the sweeping mahogany staircase of the Croft estate, catching dust in the vast foyer. Desmond Croft descended the grand steps with measured precision. He smoothed the cuffs of his tailored suit, expecting the orderly routine that governed his structured existence. Instead, his polished leather shoes halted in the center of the wide corridor. Several uniformed housemaids hurried out of the first-floor guest quarters. They carried heavy, sealed cardboard boxes filled with familiar personal effects.
Desmond frowned deeply. An irritating disruption to his calibrated morning was the last thing he wanted.
"What is the meaning of this? Why is there clutter in the main hall?" Desmond demanded, his voice ringing out crisp and authoritative, echoing off the high ceilings.
The leading maid stopped dead in her tracks. She clutched a sealed box against her starched apron and lowered her head in visible nervousness, avoiding his intense gaze.
"Mr. Croft, Ms. Adler phoned the residence early this morning. She stated explicitly that she would never set foot in the Croft estate again. She requested that all her remaining belongings be cleared out of the guest suite immediately. We are packing her things to ensure prompt delivery, sir."
A sudden, inexplicable hollow sensation tugged sharply at Desmond's chest. He stared at the plain sealed boxes resting in the maid’s arms. Involuntarily, vivid images flashed unbidden into his mind. For the past three months, Cecelia used to wait by the grand foyer at this exact morning hour. She would always stand quietly near the towering oak doors, holding his warm winter coat draped carefully over her slender arm. She would offer him a quiet, deferential smile as he stepped off the last stair, never demanding attention but always serving as a stable presence. She would pull his dining chair out for him and gently introduce light, pleasant topics to ease the tension of his demanding schedule.
Desmond felt a strange knot tighten in his throat. He despised this peculiar emptiness. Shaking off the creeping irritation, he masked his internal unease with a harsh, intimidating scowl.
"Hurry up and pack all of it away instantly. Ensure not a single trace of her presence remains in my sight. Do not leave a single item lying around this house for me to trip over."
"Understood, Mr. Croft. Right away," the maid squeaked, hurrying off with the heavy box.
Desmond turned on his heel and strode forcefully into the formal dining room. He sat down at the expansive mahogany dining table, expecting his usual pristine setting. Frustration flared hot in his chest as he checked his platinum wristwatch. The polished mahogany surface was unusually bare.
The newly hired domestic helper rushed through the swinging kitchen doors a moment later. She tentatively placed a heavy porcelain breakfast platter before him, her hands shaking slightly. Desmond stared down at the offering, his eyes narrowing in sheer disbelief. The meal consisted of nothing but simple sunny-side-up fried eggs and thick, greasy pork sausages slick with pooling oil.
Desmond's handsome face twisted into a mask of pure disgust. His severe germaphobia and strict dietary preferences were widely known laws throughout the estate. The heavy scent of animal fat and the sight of translucent oil spreading across the white porcelain turned his sensitive stomach into knots.
He slammed his sterling silver fork down onto the crisp linen napkin. The sharp ringing noise made the new helper flinch backward.
"Is the twenty-thousand-dollar monthly salary I pay the staff in this house meant to cover messy, unpalatable grease? I never consume runny yolks under any circumstances, and I do not tolerate heavy meats in the morning! Take this pathetic excuse for a meal away before I lose my temper. Have you no concept of basic hygiene or dietary requirements?"
"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, Mr. Croft! I had no idea," the helper stammered, stepping back in utter terror, clutching her empty serving tray like a shield.
At that exact moment, Agatha Thorne Croft entered the dining room. The elderly matriarch leaned heavily on her carved wooden cane, her sharp eyes missing nothing. She swept her critical gaze over the trembling maid and then locked onto the greasy plate sitting on the expensive table. Agatha released a heavy, disappointed sigh, tapping her cane against the polished hardwood floor.
"Look at this plate. This is an immediate, glaring downgrade in your quality of life. For three consecutive years, Cecelia would wake up at four o'clock in the morning without a single complaint. She personally sanitized the kitchen from top to bottom before any staff member arrived. She prepared sixteen varieties of intricate, nutritious delicacies from scratch, all slow-cooked on a gentle fire to accommodate your incredibly sensitive stomach and demanding palate. Your domestic peace has vanished with her departure."
Desmond scoffed inwardly, maintaining a cold and impenetrable exterior. He convinced himself that his highly structured, flawless life could never unravel over the absence of a woman who had only lived nearby for three short months. She was the one who wanted to break the engagement. She could leave if she pleased. He did not need her catering.
"Grandma, I need to leave for work. I do not have time to obsess over a minor adjustment in morning kitchen staff."
"You will go nowhere near the office today! You will drive straight to the Adler mansion this very minute. You will issue a formal, humble apology to Cecelia, and you will not bother returning to this home if you fail to secure her forgiveness." Agatha dropped her tone to a stern, commanding register that struck like iron.
Agatha tolerated no defiance. Her unyielding glare fixed upon him, practically pinning him to his chair. She would only accept Cecelia as her granddaughter-in-law, and she made that boundary uncompromisingly clear.
Faced with Agatha's immovable authority and realizing the futility of arguing with the matriarch, Desmond clenched his tailored trousers and grudgingly assented.
"Alright. I will head to the Adler residence."
Meanwhile, across town at the sprawling Adler residence, an explosive crash shattered the serene morning quiet of the second floor.
Cecelia's massive bedroom door was viciously kicked off its latch. The heavy wood splintered and slammed hard against the interior drywall, taking a chunk of plaster with it. Eighteen-year-old Trevor Barlow barged into the private quarters like a spoiled tyrant, his face flushed with entitled rage. He stomped across the plush carpet in his designer sneakers and aggressively ripped the thick duvet right off Cecelia's bed, throwing it onto the floor.
"What right do you have to break off the engagement with Desmond Croft? Are you trying to jeopardize my lifestyle? Get out of bed and explain yourself right now!" Trevor screamed at the top of his lungs, reaching out to grab her wrist.
Instead of shrinking in fear as she consistently had in her past life, Cecelia rose swiftly from the mattress. She effortlessly dodged his grasping hand. Without a second of hesitation, she swung her right arm and delivered a ringing, stinging slap directly across Trevor's face.
The sharp crack of flesh meeting flesh echoed loudly in the cavernous bedroom.
The teenager stumbled back several feet, clutching his burning cheek in shock. His eyes widened to unnatural proportions as the red handprint rapidly bloomed across his fair skin. He stared at her in utter disbelief, unable to process the physical retaliation from the sister who had always been a compliant pushover.
Before Trevor could recover his bearings and mount a defense, Cecelia stepped forward. Her pristine posture and chilling gaze commanded the space. Her voice froze the air in the room.
"Who gave you the audacity to force your way into my private chambers?"
A terrified young housemaid hurried into the open doorway. She threw herself into the room, shaking uncontrollably as she looked between the furious young master and the cold young heiress.
"Ms. Cecelia, it is my fault. Please forgive me, I failed to restrain him!" the young servant tearfully apologized, keeping her head bowed in deep submission.
Trevor instantly turned his explosive fury onto the helpless servant. He raised his clenched fist, preparing to strike the woman to vent his humiliation.
"Shut your degenerate mouth! This is my home, and I can be wherever I want to be!" Trevor shouted vicious obscenities at the cowering girl, advancing a threatening step.
Cecelia's sharp eyes caught sight of the maid's exposed forearms as she flinched backward. Dark, mottled purple bruises covered the pale, weeping skin. It was clear, undeniable evidence of prolonged domestic battery and repeated physical abuse.
A heavy surge of immense guilt and deep disgust hit Cecelia's chest like a physical blow. She realized with blinding clarity just how she had overlooked her stepbrother's sadistic behavior in her past life. She had spent every waking moment of her previous existence obsessing over Desmond Croft, allowing her stepfamily to foster a toxic, violent environment right beneath her own roof without facing any consequences.
Stepping firmly between Trevor and the weeping girl, Cecelia placed herself as an impenetrable barrier. She reached down and gently helped the battered servant to her feet, shielding the girl from Trevor's line of sight.
"The Adler family possesses undeniable wealth, but we are not savages who operate above the rule of law. The Adler residence isn't yours yet, Trevor, and I will not allow you to treat the staff like punching bags."
The sobbing maid clung to the back of Cecelia's gown, overwhelmed by the unexpected defense.
"Ms. Cecelia, please! Please let me be released from service! I cannot endure these torturous days anymore," the young girl begged through her endless tears.
Drawn by the violent shouting and the sound of breaking wood, Nadine rushed into the bedroom from the downstairs hall. The older woman took one look at Trevor's swollen, inflamed cheek and ignited into immediate maternal hysteria. She pointed an accusing, trembling finger at her stepdaughter.
"Have you lost your sanity, Cecelia? First you ruin the engagement with Mr. Croft, and now you are physically assaulting your own family! What on earth are you trying to do?"
Cecelia cut her down without a single shred of mercy, standing tall in the center of the room.
"I formally declare that I no longer recognize Trevor as my brother. Trevor's degenerate violent habits are direct proof of your abysmal parenting, Nadine. He forces his way into my room, and he systematically beats the domestic staff for sport. Look at the undeniable bruises covering this girl's arms!"
Nadine sneered dismissively. She waved her manicured hand in the air, aggressively brushing away the maid's severe injuries as if they were nothing more than spilled water.
"Why are you being so pathetically particular about such meaningless things? We pay generous medical stipends and provide exceptional monthly wages. Do not distract from the real issue, Cecelia! You made a firm prior commitment. I demand you fulfill your promise and sign over complete legal ownership of Adler Co. to Trevor today! You cannot go back on your solemn words just because you lost your rich fiancé."
Cecelia stared at her stepmother. She recognized the chilling reality that Trevor's reckless cruelty and staggering incompetence would inevitably bankrupt the enterprise within months of taking over. Handing him the reins was tantamount to destroying her late father's legacy in record time.
Cecelia let out a low, mocking laugh that sent a chill down the hallway.
She walked smoothly to her mahogany desk situated near the large bay window. Producing a small brass key, she unlocked the top drawer. She reached inside and pulled out the crisp, signed equity transfer agreement she had prepared just before the engagement gala.
Turning around to face her greedy stepfamily, Cecelia dangled the heavy document between two slender fingers. Maintaining a posture of supreme, untouchable confidence, she leveled her gaze at the frantic older woman. Holding up the signed equity transfer agreement, Cecelia looked at Nadine with a cold, mocking smile, questioning whether this was the exact document she was desperate to secure.
"Is this what you really want, Ms. Barlow?" Cecelia asked, her voice laced with frigid amusement.
