Trial by Pack
"Calliope stands accused of murdering the named Alpha heir by use of poisonous herbs. In doing so, her reckless jealousy pushed Daphne Hayes to the brink of death. This tribunal will hear the evidence to determine her guilt." Kaelen projected his voice across the hushed assembly, letting the accusation hang heavy in the night. Every syllable cut through the freezing air like a honed razor.
Cold sweat trickled down my spine beneath my thin, dirt-stained dress. I gritted my teeth against the biting chill, scanning the outer rings of the crowd. I searched for Nadine's familiar silhouette among the sea of angry faces. My faithful attendant was the only person who could clear my name. I swept my gaze past the sneering warriors and the stone-faced elders, but Nadine was nowhere to be found. The icy earth sapped the warmth from my bare knees, making my racing heart flutter erratically under my ribs.
Kaelen pointed down at the ancient relic resting beside the execution block. "Place your hand upon the stone."
I reached out, laying my trembling palm flat against the frozen silver altar stone. The metallic bite sent a sharp ache radiating up my arm, testing my resolve.
"Do you swear upon the Moon Goddess to speak only the truth during this tribunal?" Kaelen asked.
I forced my chin up, meeting Kaelen's piercing green eyes. Those endless green irises had haunted my nightmares for weeks. I refused to let him see me break now. "I do."
"And how do you plead?" he demanded. His tone carried zero mercy.
I filled my lungs with the freezing night air. "Not guilty." I stated, projecting my voice so every warrior, elder, and pack member could hear my conviction.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd like wind tearing through dry leaves. The wolves bared their teeth, whispering insults and trading disbelieving scowls. They expected me to crumble, to weep and confess to the heinous act.
Kaelen raised a gloved hand, cutting their noise down to a tense, suffocating silence. "The tribunal will now hear formal testimonies before the council of elders casts their vote on your sentence."
Doctor Finch took the witness stand first. He adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles with clinical detachment, turning his back to me to address the elders directly. He had taken over the pack clinic after my mother passed away. To see him standing there, using her sacred healing space to build a case for my execution, twisted a knot deep in my gut.
"The botanical in question is Mortwert. The patient, Miss Daphne Hayes, was admitted to the ward suffering from acute hemorrhagic shock. Based on my diagnostic screens, she ingested double the lethal dosage of Mortwert necessary to terminate a pregnancy. Her blood pressure dropped to alarming levels. She struggled to draw breath. The acute toxicity ravaged her system, leaving her bedridden with severe internal hemorrhaging. It took an entire day to stabilize her vitals." Doctor Finch testified under oath, his tone carrying the sterile weight of a medical text.
He paused, letting the grim medical reality soak into the silent audience.
"The botanical evidence recovered from Miss Danvers' private quarters was brought directly to my laboratory. I ran a cross-spectrum chemical analysis. I verified that the dried roots discovered beneath her bed are chemically identical to the poison retrieved from the patient's stomach." Finch announced to the rapt crowd.
A chorus of angry growls erupted from the pack. The feral noise vibrated against my ribs. I dug my fingernails into my palms to stop myself from shouting back at them. Finch was painting a flawless picture of cold, calculated murder.
The prosecution moved fast to seal my fate. Warrior Donovan stepped up to the podium next, his heavy combat boots thudding against the wooden platform. He brought my belongings with him, dumping my confiscated items in full view of the elders. He grabbed my packed leather rucksack and dropped it onto the primary evidence table with a heavy thud.
"I executed the formal search of the former Luna's chambers. We located a hidden Mortwert bundle shoved securely beneath the floorboards. Beside it, we secured this luggage. We intercepted the former Luna by her chamber doors, attempting to flee. The bag is packed with survival rations, warm clothing, and untraceable cash. This luggage serves as undeniable proof of premeditated flight following the poisoning." Donovan recounted to the elders.
The crowd snarled again, their eyes boring into my kneeling form. But Donovan was not finished.
Donovan cleared his throat, pulling a piece of crinkled parchment from his breast pocket. "We also recovered this hidden correspondence from her bedding."
He stood before the bloodthirsty pack and aired my deepest grief. He read out my private affections, my apologies for failing my family line, and my desperate love for the former Beta rotting in the damp dungeons below our feet. Donovan weaponized my mourning, twisting my sacred final words into a public confession of a treasonous heart. He paraded my vulnerability before the very wolves baying for my execution, treating my love for my father as proof of my inherent criminality.
Kaelen snatched the parchment from Donovan and held it aloft in the moonlight. "Is this your handwriting, Calliope?"
He had read my handwriting a thousand times during our mating. He already knew the answer. Shame burned the back of my throat. My chest felt tight, clogged with unshed tears.
"Yes." I admitted softly.
Gamma Declan ascended the platform next. He approached the wooden podium, his broad shoulders squared and ready to twist the knife deeper into my wound. He fixed me with a look of pure disgust.
Declan gripped the edges of the podium tighter, spinning his narrative for the judging elders. "Two weeks prior to the poisoning, the morning the pregnancy was announced, I witnessed a verbal altercation in the primary hallway. Daphne approached Calliope to request forgiveness. In return, the former Luna unleashed a barrage of unnecessary cruelty. She said horrible things. The malice in her words caused Daphne to be so overwhelmed that she collapsed to the floor. I believe this harsh verbal attack was a calculated attempt to put lethal stress on Daphne and the unborn baby to trigger a spontaneous miscarriage. It was an act motivated by unhinged jealousy."
I glared at him in silent fury. My jaw clamped shut so tight my teeth ached. What betrayed mate wouldn't lash out when confronted by the mistress proudly flaunting her pregnancy? I would love to see a male warrior act calm if his mate paraded another man's pup in his face. A male wolf would rip out throats without hesitation, yet I was being condemned as a monster for using harsh words. I was angry. I was heartbroken. Who wouldn't be?
Declan was lying by framing an emotional outburst as premeditated murder. To kill a child was an abomination. Yet his twisted testimony painted me as a vengeful monster in the eyes of the elders, dumping gasoline on the violent bloodlust hanging over the judicial clearing.
Kaelen stepped forward, his words striking the frozen air and signaling the closing of the trap. "We have one final testimony. Nadine Caldwell, Calliope's personal attendant."
A wave of relief rushed through my chest. The suffocating tightness gripping my lungs broke. Nadine had arrived. She was my salvation. She knew I never left my room during the incident. She knew the guards had kept me locked away. She knew exactly how easily that herbal bundle could have been planted by anyone with a spare key.
Nadine stepped carefully onto the raised platform. She looked physically unharmed. Her uniform was clean, and she bore no bruises or marks of rough handling from the dungeon guards. I breathed a sigh of thanks to the Goddess for keeping her safe. But she stood trembling. Her hands clamped at her sides, curled into white-knuckled fists.
I shifted on my bruised knees and offered her a tearful, hopeful smile.
She refused to look me in the eye, keeping her gaze locked onto the solid wooden podium.
"I am Nadine Caldwell. I have served as Calliope's attendant for five years now." Nadine started, her voice shaking into the tense silence.
The crowd leaned in, hanging on her every word.
Nadine gripped the edges of the podium to steady her shaking frame. "Over these years, I believed Callie to be a sweet girl who had only been dealt misfortune in her life. It made it easy for me to treat her as I would my own daughter. I was the one who personally cared for her and consoled her through the many difficult times she faced as our Luna. So, I can confirm that I know her better than anyone else."
My smile began to falter. An unfamiliar chill swept through my blood. The tone of her voice was wrong.
Nadine delivered her words to the clearing. "Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I stand before everyone today, bound by my sacred oath to the Goddess, to inform you all of the atrocity she had me perform whilst under her command."
My smile froze. An icy dread flooded my veins, choking the air from my lungs. The world stopped spinning. This made no sense. Atrocity? What atrocity? I had never commanded her to do anything malicious in the five years we spent together.
The sensory details of the frozen courtyard faded into white noise. The whistling wind died in my ears. The angry faces of the pack blurred into a massive, dark smear. The world narrowed until only Nadine's shaking lips remained in my line of sight. I stared in silent horror as the woman I trusted like a mother prepared to deliver the fatal lie that would condemn me to the grave.
Nadine's trembling voice rang out across the courtyard, sealing my fate forever. "An atrocity where Calliope, the former Luna, ordered me to present Miss Daphne Hayes a herbal tea. A tea I believe caused her miscarriage."
