Wildflower Awakening
TAMSIN'S POV
I arrange the final platter of seasoned meat next to the steaming roasted vegetables on the broad kitchen counter. I reach for the heavy silver dining tongs, intending to place them neatly on the tray for the visiting Alpha. A sharp, searing heat suddenly erupts at the base of my spinal column. It shoots up my vertebrae like liquid fire. My fingers spasm. The heavy tongs slip from my trembling grasp and clatter sharply against the granite countertop. I back away from the food, my breath hitching as brutal waves of heat crash through my nervous system. I look down at my hands. My breath catches in my throat. I stare in raw horror and awe as my skin stretches tight across my knuckles and splits open. Elongated, razor-sharp claws burst straight through my fingertips. Blood and intense pressure pulse at my cuticles. My wolf is tearing her way to the surface. It is hours before twilight. The moon sits far below the horizon. She refuses to wait for the proper time. Another jagged spike of agony rips through my bones, forcing a loud gasp past my lips.
The cold air of the kitchen does nothing to cool the raging fever burning in my veins. I stumble blindly toward the heavy back door. I shove the wood aside and flee into the dense woods behind the estate. Pine needles and loose rocks bite into the bare soles of my feet. I ignore the stinging cuts. I push deeper into the tree line, aiming for the distant, familiar rush of water. I sprint toward the wildflower field cradled by the crystal-clear lake. This is my hidden sanctuary. This is the sacred ground where, at age five, I mapped out the dream of undergoing my first shift. I had pictured my mother brushing my hair, murmuring soft encouragements by the water's edge. I had envisioned my father standing tall and proud, praising my strength alongside my brother. That fragile dream shatters the moment my knees hit the damp earth. There is no loving family to welcome me into adulthood. I collapse right into the center of the vibrant, swaying wild grass. I am alone in the wilderness. The sweet scent of blooming wildflowers surrounds me, bringing a fresh surge of unbearable grief. I curl my hands into the dirt and sob out loud. I weep bitterly for the mother who should have been here to guide me through this terrifying fire.
The fever spikes higher. I squeeze my eyes shut and surrender to the forced, agonizing transformation. My jaw locks as the bones in my legs snap. The sound is a sickening crunch echoing loudly in the quiet clearing. My joints pop and grind against each other, reshaping under the searing pressure. My spine elongates. The vertebrae tear and knit back together in rapid, brutal succession. Hot agony sweeps through my blood. I dig my new claws deep into the soil. Muscle fibers tear and stretch over my expanding frame. Thick fur erupts across my burning skin, chasing away the cold air. I ride out the blinding torment until the fire finally drains away, leaving only a strange, simmering energy in its wake. I push myself up from the crushed grass. I wobble unsteadily on four unfamiliar paws, swaying slightly as my equilibrium adjusts to the new center of gravity. I shake out my coat to rid myself of the loose forest debris. The cool wind rustles through my dense fur for the very first time.
"Hello, Tamsin! Happy Birthday! My name is Nyla, and I'm your wolf."
The cheerful voice echoes through my consciousness. It is a bright, upbeat, melodic sound, carrying a warmth I have not felt in over a decade. A heavy wave of emotion crashes over my chest.
"Hi, Nyla. It is wonderful to finally meet you. Let us go look at our reflection in the lake." I reply internally, wrapping my mind around her welcoming presence as a lifeline.
Placing one hesitant paw in front of the other, I navigate the slope down to the water's edge. My muscles feel tight but hum with untamed strength. I reach the shoreline and stare down into the glassy surface of the lake. I fall into sheer wonder at the sight. We belong in a painting. Our broad, muscular frame is cloaked predominantly in a soft, light-grey fur. It is identical in shade to the coat my mother once wore when she ran through these woods. Yet, my father's lethal lineage paints our features too. Jet-black fur tips our sharp ears, coats our massive paws up to the joints, and traces a distinct, striking dorsal stripe straight down our spine to the tip of our bushy tail. We are a perfect blend of the two wolves that brought me into this world.
"You are so beautiful, Nyla. I am so sorry Mum is not here to witness this journey. She would have adored us." A heavy sorrow washes into my chest, dragging my spirit down into the dark water.
Nyla nudges my consciousness. Her mental touch carries unconditional gentleness, though her tone remains firm. "Her death was never your fault, Tamsin."
The words strike the deepest, most infected wound in my soul. Eleven years of internalized guilt and relentless abuse whisper that my existence cost the pack their beloved Luna. I recoil from her comfort. I curl into a tight ball inside my own mind, locking myself away in the dark. I weep. The tears flow hot and fast as Nyla waits patiently. I cry for the lost years, the stolen childhood, the broken ribs, and the heavy curse of my birthday. Nyla does not press or yell. She simply wraps her warm presence around my fractured spirit. Once my sobs reduce to hollow hiccups, she lovingly coaxes me to stand up. She urges our shared body forward, demanding we lift our spirits. I relinquish control. Nyla takes the reins, bounding across the wide clearing. The sheer speed takes my breath away. We sprint through the vibrant grass, chasing painted butterflies as they flutter over the blooming buds. We leap, snap at the air, and roll in the dirt. For a fleeting handful of minutes, I know what it feels like to be wild and free.
The sun dips slightly lower in the sky. Panic seizes my throat in an icy grip. I realize just how much time we squandered in the meadow. The Alpha guest is due soon. Tardiness on my birthday guarantees a doubled, brutal punishment from my father. I cannot afford a single mistake today. I force the painful shift back to my human form. The bones snap and grind once more, dumping me bare, shivering, and breathless onto the forest floor. I scramble through the scratchy underbrush near the tree line. My fingers find a discarded patrol t-shirt slung over a low branch. It smells heavily of dirt and sweet pine, left behind by a border guard in a rush. I drag the rough fabric over my bare skin. It hangs far past my trembling thighs. I surge to my bare feet and sprint back toward the towering estate. I slip through the side kitchen door, breathing hard, and rush straight to the formal dining room. I frantically arrange the steaming platters of seasoned meat across the massive oak table. I straighten every polished silver fork. I double-check the placement of the crystal water goblets. I wipe away an imaginary smudge on the Alpha's large plate. Once the feast sits in flawless presentation, I pivot, intending to flee to the cold safety of my hidden attic.
I dash toward the grand staircase, taking the first few carpeted steps upward in a frantic rush. I turn the curved landing and slam directly into a solid, massive chest.
"Watch it! Bitch!!" Declan snarls, his hands shooting out to grab my shoulders in a bone-crushing grip.
He shoves me back against the railing, sneering down at my tangled hair and the oversized, dirt-stained patrol shirt swallowing my frame. His eyes harden into cruel slits as he looks me up and down.
"Is the formal lunch prepared for the guest?"
"Yes, Declan. The tables are set and the platters are ready." I stammer, my voice shaking in raw terror.
I try to edge around his broad frame, desperate to put distance between us. His fingers shoot out and ruthlessly wind into my matted hair. He yanks his arm back, dragging me backward onto the hard wooden landing. Pain flares across my scalp.
"I didn't give you permission to leave."
Declan pulls his massive fist back. He drives his knuckles square into the ribs Gareth fractured just last night. The wet, hollow crack echoes against the corridor walls. The brutal impact knocks every ounce of wind from my lungs. My vision flashes blinding white. I fall hard to the carpeted floor. I drag my knees to my chest, curling into the tightest defensive ball my battered muscles will allow. I throw my arms over the back of my neck to protect my skull. Declan starts kicking. Hard, unrelenting, steel-toed strikes land wherever he finds an opening. He kicks my spine, my thighs, my bruised shoulders. Each blow sends shockwaves of fresh agony through my nervous system. I bite my lip until I taste copper, refusing to cry out.
Downstairs, the front door chatters open. Familiar, harsh laughter from his warrior friends drifts up into the foyer. Declan finally halts his assault. He straightens his dark jacket, casts one last venomous glare at my bleeding form, and swaggers down the steps to join his audience.
Gasps shudder through my battered chest. I lie broken on the floor, staring blindly at the baseboards. I swallow my hot tears, tasting blood and despair in equal measure. Every breath forces a sharp stab of pain through my splintered ribs.
Nyla stirs in the back of my mind. Her voice wraps around me with reassuring warmth.
"I am here, Tamsin. I am with you now. My presence will accelerate our healing process. You do not have to endure this alone anymore."
I draw a ragged breath, pulling on the latent strength of my new wolf. I drag my bruised, heavy frame upright, leaning heavily on the wooden stair banister. Every step up the remaining stairs brings a fresh wave of stinging torture. I grit my teeth and force myself upward. I reach the top floor. My trembling fingers grasp the cold brass doorknob of my bedroom. Downstairs, the heavy oak front doors burst open. The sudden flurry of heavy boots thudding against the marble tile echoes up the deep stairwell. Deep, resonant Alpha voices flood the foyer below. The visiting guest has arrived.
I am drained of every ounce of physical and emotional strength. I push into my tiny room and leave my door slightly unlatched, just in case my tormentors summon me to serve the stranger. I peel off the filthy patrol shirt with agonizing slowness. I change into my worn, faded sweatpants and a clean grey t-shirt. I stagger toward the dark corner of the room. I collapse onto my thin, lumpy mattress. I close my swollen eyes and allow the sweet, heavy oblivion of exhaustion to pull me under.
