Cornered Prey

Jessamine's P.O.V.

My chest heaved with every stolen, ragged breath, caught in a brutal tug-of-war between dizzying relief and paralyzing terror. The small, worn-down house sat dead quiet. Dust motes danced in the pale morning light filtering through the cracked window panes, offering a rare stretch of silence in an otherwise miserable existence. I tore through my cramped bedroom, frantic and desperate, kicking aside discarded shoes and empty boxes. I knew moving too fast risked making noise, but the crushing panic overrode my caution. My good hand snatched whatever I could carry, rapidly stuffing a faded canvas backpack with a handful of oversized clothes, a few crinkled bills of stolen cash, and packets of dry food I had smuggled from the pantry.

Every creak of the aging floorboards sent a fresh spike of dread trailing down my spine. My fractured arm throbbed a vicious, unrelenting rhythm against my ribs. I kept the swollen, bruised limb cradled tight to my chest, grimacing every time I turned my body. The dull, shooting ache radiated all the way up to my collarbone, serving as a grim but effective reminder of why I needed to vanish forever.

My heart hammered wildly against my sternum. I fully expected the front door to burst off its hinges at any given second. I braced myself for my parents to storm inside and tear me apart for stealing their meager supplies. Even worse, my parched throat tightened at the sickening thought of a monstrous Lycan crashing through the fractured drywall to drag me out by my hair.

They were already here, walking on Onyx Moon territory.

The damp dirt hummed beneath my worn sneakers. Even without a wolf to guide my senses, I felt the rolling shockwaves of their ancient, menacing magic. The overwhelming vibration resonated up through the floorboards, sinking deep into my fragile human bones. Their dark aura tasted heavy and metallic in the freezing morning air, making the tiny hairs on my arms stand on end.

I swung the heavy backpack over my right shoulder and bolted. The rusted hinges of the back door shrieked agonizingly into the quiet space, but I did not stop to pull it shut. I plunged straight into the overgrown brush, throwing my frantic body into the dense, unwelcoming forest. The dry winter wind clawed relentlessly at my lungs, scraping my throat raw. My bad arm burned with sharp, stinging agony every time my boots slammed against the uneven mesh of hidden roots and jagged rocks, but I gritted my teeth and pushed my burning legs to run faster.

The thick cluster of towering pine trees offered a deceptive veil of security, whispering the sweet promise of safety. Every jagged branch seemed determined to rip at my clothes, but I ignored the tearing fabric. I just needed to reach the border. A few more miles through the unclaimed territory, and I would vanish into a nameless human town, far away from claws and fangs and endless abuse.

Then, the shadows came.

A massive, hulking silhouette blurred past my peripheral vision.

My breath hitched sharply, choking on a terrified sob. I snapped my head to the right, finding nothing but swaying branches and a shower of dropping pinecones. The forest grew unnaturally quiet. I squeezed my eyes shut for a fraction of a second, praying it was just a trick of the dappled light, but the looming shape materialized in the left corner of my eye, darting effortlessly through the thick foliage.

I was not alone.

A guttural, chest-rattling growl slithered out from the dark brush behind me. The thunderous, rhythmic stomping of heavy boots joined the symphony of terror, matching my frantic pace stride for desperate stride. The heavy thuds shook the heavy, dead leaves from the high canopy above. My human stamina drained with every frantic heartbeat, leaving a bitter taste of copper on my parched tongue.

Two more nightmarish figures flanked my path. They ran on two legs, but there was nothing human about the twisted, muscular shapes tracking me through the morning mist. They were hunting me for sport.

I skidded to a sudden halt, my worn sneakers kicking up a thick cloud of damp dirt and pine needles.

Four towering Lycans stepped out from the oppressive shadows, blocking off every conceivable escape route. Their terrifying half-shifted forms stole the remaining oxygen straight from my burning lungs. Coarse, dark fur sprouted along their bulging, unnatural chests. Sharp, elongated claws flexed in eager anticipation of a kill. The smell of wet earth and primal predator flooded my senses.

A strikingly pale female separated herself from the hunting party. Eerie, milky-white eyes locked onto my dirt-smudged face. The lack of visible irises made my stomach churn with fresh nausea, yet I knew she was tearing right through my soul, reading every ounce of my mounting dread. She tilted her chin, scrutinizing my shivering, battered frame with obvious sick amusement.

"You can stop running now, as entertaining as your desperate little attempt was." She mocked me, her smooth tone dripping with sadistic triumph.

The border felt so incredibly close. The invisible line separating this living hell from true freedom called out to my desperate spirit. I refused to surrender here, not when salvation was just a few meaningless yards away. I planted my back foot in the soft moss, pivoted sharply on my heel, and bolted blindly toward a narrow gap in the open tree line.

I slammed backward, rebounding off an immovable wall of solid, scorching muscle.

A brutal gasp exploded from my lips as thick arms coiled around my waist like relentless steel cables. The massive beast hoisted me forcefully over his broad shoulder, treating me like a weightless ragdoll. His rough, coarse fur scratched against my sensitive skin, suffocating me with the scent of wild animal and leather. I thrashed wildly against his back, kicking my legs and throwing blind punches with my good hand. The canvas backpack swung up on impact, smacking me hard against the temple and blinding me with a flash of white light. I screamed, scraping my dull fingernails against the impenetrable hide of his neck.

"I am just an unshifted human! I never shifted! I am worthless to you!" I cried out, my voice cracking with pure desperation.

Deep, menacing laughter erupted from the surrounding monsters. My terrified, pathetic pleas only fed their dark amusement. The warrior’s grip tightened around my stinging thighs, clamping down until my bones ached under the immense pressure. The forest scenery blurred into a dizzying, sickening rush of green and brown as the beast sprinted back toward the pack grounds, effortlessly carrying my thrashing body. A grueling journey that took me so much agonizing effort was brutally undone in a matter of freezing minutes.

The distant, fearful murmurs of the Onyx Moon pack bled through the trees. The beast surged past the familiar tree line and strode directly into the center of the muddy assembly. He did not slow down to announce his catch.

He unceremoniously dumped me.

I plummeted toward the hard frozen grass, landing dead on my fractured arm. A jagged, blood-curdling scream tore from my raw throat. White-hot agony exploded through my torn limb, sending sharp sparks of pain dancing behind my tightly shut eyelids. I curled into a trembling ball, gasping for shallow breaths as hot tears spilled down my dirty cheeks. The damp mud soaked immediately into my ruined clothes.

The entire clearing fell dead silent. The muffled sobs and frantic whispers of the gathered wolves evaporated into the morning air.

I locked my terrified gaze onto the frost-covered mud, unable to lift my chin. A suffocating, crushing aura pressed down heavily on my shoulders, forcing my face even closer to the dirt. The air turned scorching hot, smelling of thick woodsmoke and raw, unfiltered dominance. The weight of his presence made the very earth tremble underneath my bleeding fingers.

The King.

A deep, bone-rattling growl rumbled from somewhere massive above me. The sound was not just a simple noise. It was a physical, bruising force, a dark, vibrating warning that made every inch of my skin prickle with icy goosebumps. Huge, scarred boots stepped slowly into my narrow field of vision, stopping just a breath away from my face.

"Why do you want her? She is just a pathetic, unshifted human!"

Kendra’s shrill, disgusted screech shattered the eerie silence of the assembly, echoing off the surrounding trees.

I froze, the breath trapped tight in my lungs. I shifted my eyes slightly to the side, spotting Kendra glaring up from her knees in the mud. Her face twisted into a bold mask of jealousy and outrage. No one in the history of our pack ever spoke to an Alpha that way, let alone to the ruthless Lycan King standing right in front of them.

An earth-shattering roar erupted from the King's massive chest. The monstrous sound blasted across the open clearing, carrying a terrifying promise of immediate, inescapable death. The sheer force of his voice commanded obedience, forcing every single wolf in the assembly to drop their heads lower in pure terror. Their collective whimpers filled the suffocating silence.

The scarred boots shifted away from me. The crushing weight of his aura lessened just a fraction, allowing me to lift my heavy head and watch the gruesome nightmare unfold.

Towering to his full, majestic height, the King stalked over to Kendra. He was a walking symbol of destruction, stacked with bulging muscle and covered head to toe in knotted, jagged scars that peaked out from beneath his dark fur. He dwarfed his own royal warriors, presenting an image of pure, unadulterated savagery.

He stopped right in front of the kneeling woman. Kendra’s bold, defiant sneer faltered in a heartbeat, replaced instantly by wide-eyed, trembling panic. She leaned back, raising her hands to beg.

He barely even pulled his thick arm back. With a sickening, effortless thrust, the King punched his massive, razor-sharp claw directly through the center of Kendra’s chest.

Flesh tore wide open. Ribs cracked and splintered with a deafening, wet snap. Thick red blood erupted in a gruesome arc, splashing across the frozen faces of the kneeling pack members. The King’s dark talons burst out of her spine, gripping a slick, pulsing mass of red muscle. He ripped her heart clean out the other side.

Kendra’s lifeless eyes rolled into the back of her skull. A terrible wet gargle escaped her parted lips before her limp body slumped sideways, hitting the dirt with a hollow, bloody thud.

The King opened his massive, blood-soaked grip. He dropped the disembodied, dripping heart onto the muddy ground. It landed with a grim smack, leaking a thick, expanding puddle of crimson across the dead grass. Steam rose from the hot blood, twisting into the freezing morning air. The monstrous Lycans standing guard at the edge of the clearing did not even flinch.

Horrified gasps and fresh weeping broke out across the pack. Shifters squeezed their eyes shut in despair, burying their faces to escape the overwhelming coppery scent of fresh death drowning the clearing.

"You will do well to teach your pack to respect those above them." The white-eyed witch’s calm voice echoed out, cutting cleanly over the wailing crowd.

I lay frozen on the ground. My heart forgot how to beat in my own chest. My broken arm throbbed viciously, but I could not focus on the pain anymore. All my wide eyes could see was the smoking, ruined crater in Kendra's chest and the dark pool expanding rapidly beneath her twisted corpse.

Heavy, wet footsteps crunched against the grass, drawing closer. The King walked back to where I lay paralyzed in the mud. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the same brutal claws to pierce my delicate spine and tear me open.

Instead, a massive, searing hand clamped onto the top handle of my canvas backpack.

The heavy canvas fabric groaned under his immense grip. He lifted me straight into the sky, pulling me up with such effortless strength that I felt weightless in his grasp. My boots left the earth, dangling uselessly in the cold air as he hoisted me up. Pure instinct took over my trembling body. I tilted my chin up, forcing my terrified gaze upward to meet his.

I stared directly into the burning, glowing red eyes of the Lycan King. The flames of hell danced swirling in his irises, promising devastation and a terrifying, shocking possessiveness that paralyzed my lungs. Dark red blood smeared his massive knuckles, glowing wet under the morning light.

His strong jaw parted. His deep, rumbling voice vibrated deep into my very marrow.

"Mine."
