A Trap
POV: ELARA
My boots hammered against the cafeteria floor. I stormed straight toward the center of the room, my hands curling into tight fists at my sides. A deep, feral anger brewed in my chest, heating my blood until it felt like magma pumping through my veins. Every survival instinct inside me screamed that I was walking straight into a calculated trap. Sloane’s minions were already fanning out, tightening their circle, positioning themselves like a pack cornering prey.
The usual deafening roar of the student body flatlined into a dead, suffocating silence. The anticipation in the air was thick enough to choke on. Students abandoned their half-eaten meals, scrambling over benches and tables just to get a better view. I kept my eyes locked on Maisie. The younger girl was trapped on the cold tiles, her face wet with tears, trembling helplessly under Sloane’s merciless grip. Seeing Maisie’s sheer terror erased any lingering doubt in my mind. I could not just walk away. My dreams of graduating and joining the Vanguard meant nothing if I let an innocent girl get beaten just for showing me an ounce of kindness.
I stopped just a few feet away from the pampered brat. The nauseating scent of her synthetic cherry blossom perfume hit the back of my throat.
"Let her go." I kept my voice low and dangerous, forcing my inner wolf back down. She was clawing at the walls of my mind, begging to rip Sloane’s throat out right here in front of everyone.
Sloane threw her head back and let out a loud, grating laugh. Her lackeys took their cue, immediately raising their phones, aiming the lenses at my face to record every single second of the confrontation.
"Wow. Miss Vanguard Warrior is getting super cocky." Sloane sneered, her hazel eyes gleaming with a sickening, malicious intent. "First hospitalizing my boyfriend, now threatening me. Have you forgotten the rules, Elara? Engaging in fights on school grounds means immediate expulsion. My father will personally kick your pathetic ass to the curb. He would love to report your feral behavior to the Princes."
I swallowed the rising bile in my throat. That was exactly what she wanted. She wanted me to strike first so she could destroy my future.
"I have no interest in fighting you. Just let her go." I stared her down, refusing to break eye contact.
Sloane tilted her head, feigning deep contemplation. "You know what? I will let her go, on one condition."
My muscles tensed, bracing for the worst. "What condition?"
A cruel, triumphant smile spread across Sloane’s face. "I heard my boyfriend's wish was for you to kiss his shoes and beg before you put him in a damn coma! As his loyal girlfriend, I want to finish what he started." She pointed a manicured finger down at her expensive, designer footwear. "Say please and kiss these shoes."
The surrounding crowd erupted into a rhythmic, pounding chant. *Kiss her shoes! Kiss her shoes!* The heavy pressure crashed down on my shoulders, suffocating me. I stared directly into the cold, unblinking lenses of a dozen camera phones. My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird. I had never begged for anything in my miserable life. Every fiber of my being rebelled against the demand. My wolf snarled in my head, demanding blood, demanding respect. But then I looked at Maisie. The ginger-haired girl was shaking her head frantically, mouthing a silent plea for me not to ruin myself for her. If I walked away now, Sloane would beat her senseless. If I fought back, I would lose the Vanguard forever.
I had to swallow every single ounce of my pride to save her.
My legs trembled with deep, burning shame as I forced my knees to bend. The hard floor sent a shockwave up my shins. A collective, mocking gasp echoed through the cafeteria. My cheeks burned like fire. I locked my jaw, fighting the tears of pure humiliation stinging the corners of my eyes. This was the brutal price of survival. This was the heavy cost of a clear conscience.
I looked up at Sloane. "Please."
The word scraped raw against my throat. I forced my spine to bend. I leaned over, inch by excruciating inch, until my lips physically pressed against the dirty leather of her shoe. The stench of dirt and floor wax filled my nose. The horrible moment felt like an eternity.
The second I pulled back, a deafening eruption of cruel laughter and mockery shattered the room. Jeers and insults rained down on me from every direction. I planted my hands on the tiles, preparing to stand up and salvage whatever tiny shred of dignity I had left to my name.
A warm, wet glob struck the top of my head.
I froze.
Sloane had just spat on me. The horrific indignity of the warm saliva seeping into my hair paralyzed my lungs. A sharp gasp rippled through the front row of onlookers as the cruelty of the act registered.
"You did not have to do that!" Maisie cried out from the floor, her voice thick with tears.
"Shut up, bitch!" Sloane roared.
I saw the flash of movement. Sloane brazenly raised her hand, aiming a vicious backhand right at Maisie’s tear-stained face.
My iron-clad control snapped. The heavy leash holding my wolf back shattered into a million jagged pieces.
I shot up from the floor like a coiled spring. My hand shot out, gripping Sloane’s wrist with bone-crushing force right before her brutal strike could land. Her malicious grin vanished, replaced instantly by wide-eyed shock as my fingers dug ruthlessly into her pulse point, cutting off her circulation.
"You really shouldn't have done that." My voice was dead, devoid of all human emotion.
I pulled my free hand back and smacked her incredibly hard across the face. The sickening smack echoed over the silent crowd. Blood instantly splattered from her split mouth, painting the white floor tiles red.
Sloane shrieked. It was a shrill, piercing sound of utter disbelief. She touched her trembling fingers to her mouth, staring at the bright crimson smearing her skin.
"You slapped me?!" she bellowed, her face twisting into an ugly mask of pure rage. She swung her free hand in a wild, desperate arc aimed straight at my head.
I easily caught her incoming fist. I yanked her forward and slammed my forehead directly into the center of her face. The brutal, sickening crack of her nose breaking echoed loudly through the collective gasps of the student body. Sloane stumbled backward, blood gushing freely from her ruined nose, coating her chin and throat in a thick red mask.
"That is for hurting Maisie." I spat venomously, stepping right into her space. "And this is for being such a pain in my ass!"
I pivoted on my heel and kicked her viciously in the stomach. The raw force of the blow lifted her feet clean off the ground. Her body flew backward through the air until she crashed painfully onto the hard floor, skidding several feet before coming to a dead stop. She curled into a pathetic ball, clutching her stomach and groaning in utter agony. The tight circle of students scrambled backward, terrified to end up in my crosshairs.
I turned my furious glare toward her cowardly friends. They were still clutching their phones, their faces pale with terror. None of them dared to step forward. Instead, they dropped their cameras and rushed over to coddle their bleeding leader.
Maisie scrambled off the floor and grabbed my arm, her fingers digging frantically into my jacket sleeve. "Come on! We have to get out of here!"
The feral rage was still pumping heavily through my veins. I wanted to tear through the rest of them. I wanted to break every single person who had stood by and laughed at my public humiliation. But Sloane was no longer a threat. She was a broken, bloody mess on the floor. I forced myself to listen to Maisie. I turned toward the exit, my chest heaving with exertion.
We did not make it three steps.
Principal Arthur Vane barged aggressively through the parting crowd. He was a massive, beefy man with a balding head, his face flushed dark red with authority.
"What in the world is going on here?!" he bellowed, his booming voice shaking the cafeteria windows.
The students scattered like roaches, rushing back to their tables in a panic, leaving only me, Maisie, and the pathetic pile of Sloane and her friends in the center aisle. Principal Vane’s furious gaze swept over the chaotic scene. The moment he spotted the bloody aftermath, all color drained from his face.
"Pumpkin!" He rushed frantically past me, dropping his massive frame to his knees on the hard floor. He carefully cradled his daughter’s head, his hands shaking as he assessed the heavy damage to her face.
Sloane put on the performance of a lifetime. She wailed, coughing up blood and snot, playing the role of the helpless victim to perfection.
"What happened to her?!" he roared, glaring up at the surrounding students.
Sloane’s friends immediately pointed their manicured fingers directly at me. They tripped over their own words to paint me as the unprovoked, savage instigator. They claimed I had attacked Sloane out of nowhere, that she had just been trying to help Maisie up off the floor. It was a disgusting, blatant lie.
"That is not true! She made me kneel!" I pleaded desperately, taking a step forward to defend myself.
Principal Vane shot to his feet. His face was already twisted in an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He did not care about the truth. He only cared that his precious daughter was bleeding on the floor.
"That is it, Elara!" he roared, spit flying from his lips and hitting my cheek. "You are no longer welcome in this school!"
The cold reality of his words hit me like a freight train. My heart dropped into my stomach. "Please, Mr. Vane! You have to hear my side of the story! They set me up!"
"I do not care about your side!" he snarled, taking a threatening step toward me. "Your former Alpha warned me about you. He told me you were nothing but dangerous trouble, a feral stray who could not be tamed. Now I see he was right. Pack your bags and leave the grounds immediately. You have been expelled!"
The entire world crumbled beneath my boots. The Vanguard. The Princes. My freedom. Everything I had bled for over the last few years evaporated in a single instant.
"Please—" I begged, my voice cracking, tears of panic finally breaking through my rigid control. "My graduation is in a few weeks! I have nowhere else to go!"
"GET OUT!" he bellowed, pointing a thick finger toward the cafeteria doors.
Through my breaking tears, my vision blurring into a watery mess, I caught movement over Vane’s broad shoulder. Sloane was peering around her father’s arm. Despite the blood pouring from her shattered nose and split lip, a smug, victorious smile stretched across her face.
Her malicious trap had worked perfectly. I had lost everything.
Distraught and utterly defeated, my lungs burning with devastation, I spun on my heel. I tore out of the cafeteria, ignoring the stares and whispers of the crowd. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, sobbing uncontrollably as the heavy doors slammed shut behind me. This was undeniably the worst day of my miserable life.
