Little Firecracker
POV: KAEL
The rhythmic thud of combat boots and the heavy grunts of fifty sweating men should have been enough to keep my mind grounded in the present. I stood on the polished concrete floor of the training facility, my arms crossed over my chest, supervising the elite Vanguard recruits. Yet, my intrusive thoughts kept drifting relentlessly to Elara. She was exactly twenty-three minutes late. Every tick of the digital clock on the far wall grated against my nerves, feeding a dangerous, restless energy brewing inside my chest.
The heavy steel doors of the training room finally groaned open.
Elara snuck through the threshold, pausing for a fraction of a second as the harsh fluorescent lights hit her. My breath hitched in my throat. She was dressed in the standard issue combat uniform, but the black tactical top and camouflage pants clung to her in a way that defied military regulations. The tight fabric accentuated the swell of her breasts and the sharp inward dip of her small waist, hugging every curve of her hips and thighs. My heart hammered painfully against my ribs. My inner wolf stirred, pacing in the confines of my mind with intense, aggressive possession. He wanted to cross the room, bury his nose in the crook of her neck, and claim the space around her.
The unmated Beta and Alpha males in the room lost their minds.
Training ground to an immediate halt. The men acted like starved animals catching the scent of fresh meat. They stared at the first female in the program's long history, whistling, catcalling, and making crude, guttural noises of approval. The raw hunger in their eyes made my vision tint red. My anger flared white-hot, burning through my veins like liquid fire.
"Silence!"
I barked the command, letting the sheer weight of my Alpha voice echo off the concrete walls. The crushing pressure of my aura slammed into the men, snapping their spines straight and wiping the stupid grins off their faces. They scrambled into rigid lines, standing at strict attention.
"You are acting like a bunch of pathetic fools. The enemy might as well send a distraction to slaughter you all while you stand around drooling. Drop to the floor. Give me a grueling hundred pushups right now." I ordered, pacing back and forth in front of their ranks.
The platoon dropped in unison, their palms slapping the mats as they began their punishment. Elara rushed forward to join the end of the line, dropping to her knees to assume the position.
"You. Come here." I pointed my finger directly at her face.
She froze, her eyes widening slightly before she pushed herself up and jogged over. She stopped two feet away from me, keeping her chin tucked.
"Yes, your Highness." She breathed, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
"It is Commander now. You are twenty-three minutes late." I growled, stepping into her personal space to loom over her.
She opened her mouth, her silver eyes darting up to mine. "Commander, I was held up at the—"
"I do not want to hear a single excuse that comes out of your mouth, girl." I viciously cut her off, my voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "You are a liability to this platoon. Come late again and you are kicked off the program. Am I understood?"
I watched her chest heave. I saw the exact moment she swallowed her burning defiance. The storm in her silver eyes flashed with suppressed rage, but she locked her jaw and stared straight ahead.
"Understood, Commander." She agreed, her tone clipped and hard.
I dismissed her to join the pushups, watching her grueling effort for the rest of the session. Where the seasoned males began to shake and fail under the physical strain, Elara kept going, her muscles trembling but her willpower unbroken.
Hours later, the structured classes were over. I walked the quiet corridors of the facility, reviewing the training logs on my tablet. My enhanced werewolf hearing caught a muffled voice echoing from the empty boys' locker room ahead. I paused, tilting my head to listen. It was my assistant coach.
"I am telling you, she is an absolute beast on the mats." His voice carried through the metal door, laced with a sleazy, excited edge. "I heard she is a rejected Omega. With abnormal strength like that and a body built for sin, I wonder how she would perform in bed. She could probably take a knot like a champion."
Something inside my brain violently snapped. The rational part of my mind went dark, replaced by a blinding, primal fury.
In one fluid, blindingly fast motion, I breached the room. The metal door slammed against the brick wall with a deafening crash. Before my assistant could even drop his phone, I crossed the tiles utilizing my super speed. I snatched the device from his grip, crushing the glass and metal to powder inside my bare fist. I grabbed him by the throat and slammed him forcefully against the metal lockers. The steel dented inward under the impact of his spine.
"Your Highness!" He gasped, his hands clawing uselessly at my thick forearm.
"Stay away from her." I growled, squeezing his fragile neck until his airway collapsed.
His face turned a mottled shade of purple. His eyes bulged in their sockets, his feet kicking empty air as I lifted him inches off the floor. The furious beast inside me demanded I rip his throat out for daring to speak about her body.
"If I get even a hint that you looked at her, or breathed around her wrongly, I will rip your tongue from your mouth and ensure you never draw breath in this territory again. Do you understand me?" I snarled, my fangs elongating against my bottom lip.
"Y-yes... yes!" He croaked, tears streaming down his purple cheeks.
The acrid, pathetic stench of urine filled the air. A dark puddle formed on the floor tiles beneath his dangling boots. He had pissed himself in sheer terror.
I dropped him to the floor in utter disgust. He collapsed into a pathetic heap, gagging and clutching his bruised throat. I turned my back on him and stalked out of the locker room, my blood still boiling. I dragged a heavy hand down my face, internally questioning my own sanity. I claimed to despise this broken Omega. I told my brother she was nothing but trouble, yet the mere thought of another male touching her drove me to the brink of murder.
Long after the sun went down, the facility emptied out. The quiet hum of the ventilation system was the only sound in the building. I was on my way out, my mind focused on getting a hot meal, when movement in the main gym caught my eye.
I stepped through the open doorway and looked up. Elara was scaling the massive climbing wall.
She was fifty feet in the air, clinging to the artificial rock grips. I scanned the floor beneath her and felt a massive spike of panic hit my chest. She was operating without a safety harness, and the thick crash cushions had already been stored away in the equipment closet. One slip, and she would shatter every bone in her body against the hard concrete.
I moved into the center of the room, my muscles tense. She was visibly exhausted. Her black hair clung to her sweaty neck, and her arms trembled violently under her own body weight. She was stubbornly trying to perfect a complex crossover move she had missed during the afternoon drills.
I opened my mouth to shout a command for her to get down.
Before the sound left my throat, her sweaty hand slipped off the grip. She missed her footing entirely.
A terrified scream tore from her throat as she plummeted backward into open air.
My instincts took over instantly. I surged forward, pushing off the concrete and utilizing my super speed to cross the distance in a fraction of a second. I positioned myself directly beneath her falling form and caught her perfectly mid-air.
The precise second her body landed securely in my muscular arms, violent electric sparks bloomed aggressively across my skin. The reaction ignited wherever her bare hands and sweaty neck touched my arms. It felt like standing in the center of a lightning strike. At the same moment, the wildly intoxicating scent of warm butter and sweet honey flooded my senses, washing away the smell of gym sweat and chalk. The aroma triggered a deep, primal purr in the center of my chest.
She clung to my shoulders, her chest heaving against mine. I looked down into the storm of her silver eyes. Staring into her gaze suddenly felt like stepping into a sanctuary, a profound comfort zone pulling me inextricably in. I stared at the soft part of her lips, my gaze dropping to her mouth.
"What is going on here?"
The magical spell shattered into a million pieces. The spark died, and the honey scent vanished, replaced by the freezing air of the training room.
I snapped my head toward the door. My older brother, Rowan, stood just a few feet away. His hands were shoved deep into the pockets of his dark slacks, and his face was an unreadable mask of solid ice. His piercing blue eyes tracked the way I was holding her against my chest.
I set Elara down quickly on her feet, taking a deliberate step back to restore the physical distance. My skin felt cold where she had just been.
"This little firecracker was making a foolish suicide attempt on the wall." I claimed, desperately masking the charged moment with a harsh lie.
"What? No I was not!" Elara gasped, spinning around to face my brother. "I was trying to complete the climbing sequence from class."
Rowan stepped forward. His icy glare swept critically over her trembling form, analyzing her lack of gear.
"Without a harness, without a safety cushion, and without a commanding officer present?" Rowan asked, his tone radiating a cold, terrifying authority that made the hairs on my arms stand up. "Go home, Elara."
She glared at him, her pride wounded. She turned on her heel and stormed past us in a huff, heading straight for the exit.
As she passed Rowan, he reached out. His large hand grabbed her upper arm with a chilling, absolute dominance, stopping her dead in her tracks. She gasped, her eyes flying up to meet his.
"Do not ever try this little stunt again, you hear me?" Rowan ordered, his voice vibrating with a dark, heavy promise.
Elara stared at him, her defiance crumbling under the weight of his stare. She nodded quickly. Rowan released his grip, letting his hand fall back to his side. Once she scurried off into the dark corridor, disappearing from sight, Rowan slowly turned his stern, piercing gaze to me.
"I saw the way you were looking at her, Kae." Rowan flatly accused, his voice void of any warmth. "You were looking at her like you are helplessly in love."
I scoffed, deeply offended and overly defensive. I crossed my arms over my chest to hide the lingering tremor in my hands.
"That girl is trouble, and I have no intentions of getting wrapped up in her or her drama." I brushed the accusation off, taking a step toward my brother. "Besides, it is you I should be worried about. I saw the way you just grabbed her. I felt the pressure in the room."
Rowan kept his face a blank slate, refusing to take the bait.
"You care about her." I pushed, noting how aggressively he had warned her off the wall. He had not shown that level of interference with any recruit in our history.
Rowan's eyes hardened into a terrifying mask. He deflected my accusation with smooth precision, turning his broad back to me and walking toward the exit. "I am going to get dinner. Lock up the gym before you leave."
I watched him walk away. The twin bond between us felt locked tight, shielded behind his massive mental walls.
"You can have her, you know." I called after him, deliberately testing the waters.
Rowan stopped mid-stride. He did not turn his body, only tilting his head slightly over his shoulder. In the next second, a staggering, suffocating wave of furious Alpha authority shot straight down the twin bond connecting our minds. The mental pressure dropped me to one knee.
"Do not piss me off, Kae." Rowan rumbled dangerously.
The sheer weight of his voice caused cold goosebumps to erupt violently all over my skin. The air in the room grew thin.
"That part of my life is dead, and it will stay buried." He finished, severing the mental pressure as quickly as he had applied it.
He walked out of the room, his footsteps fading down the hall, leaving me alone in the heavy silence. I pushed myself up from the concrete floor, brushing the dust from my knee. I might have believed his words. I might have believed we were truly on the same page regarding the Omega girl, had he not just violently exposed a massive flash of protective anger through our bond. It was the very first true emotion my brother had shown in years.
