The Fake Dating Proposal

CLARA's POV

"What I am willing to give you?"

I stared at him. My brain stalled, the gears grinding to a halt as if he had spoken in a dead language. The syllables echoed off the vaulted ceiling of the penthouse suite, hanging between us like a physical weight. What kind of question was that? We were standing in a hotel room in the middle of Seattle, miles away from my normal life, and this towering stranger was demanding to know what I could offer him.

"What does that even mean?" I demanded. My voice shook with a mixture of outrage and confusion before I forced the tremor down. "I do not know you. We are strangers. You cannot lock me in a room and ask what I am willing to give you."

A harsh, bitter laugh tore its way up my throat. The sound was sarcastic, defensive, and borderline unhinged. I gripped the leather strap of my purse until my knuckles turned stark white.

My cheeks were on fire. The heat rushed under my skin, spreading down my neck and pooling in my chest. My own body was betraying me under the sheer, suffocating proximity of him. He was standing far too close. My gaze rebelled against my forced bravado, dropping without permission to take in the expanse of his bare chest. The harsh suite lighting illuminated the deep, carved ridges of his abs and the raw, heavy power in his thick arms. He looked like a weapon forged for destruction. My eyes snapped back up, catching on the small, jagged scar just above his left eyebrow. It was a dark little flaw, yet it only served to make him look dangerously perfect.

"Rhys Kincaid."

Two words. He dropped them into the space between us, shattering the thick air like a fragile pane of glass.

My blood turned to ice.

Every single muscle in my body went rigid. The burning heat in my face vanished, replaced by a cold, sickening dread that seized my lungs. The floor beneath my boots felt like it was crumbling away into nothing.

"What did you just say?" I breathed. My voice was a fragile whisper.

"Rhys Kincaid." Kaelen repeated the name with a terrifying calm. He spoke with a chilling detachment, as if he were commenting on the weather outside. "I know everything about him. I know about your two-year relationship. I know how he cheated on you with my own sister. And I know how you were dumped like you meant nothing to him."

The room tilted on its axis. My vision swam for a dizzying second. The painful memories I had spent months trying to bury clawed their way back to the surface. The late-night arguments. The lingering scent of another woman’s perfume on his jacket. The soul-crushing realization that the man I had built my life around was sleeping with someone else, discarding our history without a second thought.

How did he know? How could this billionaire stranger have the most humiliating, agonizing details of my life memorized? Was this some sick, elaborate game? My mind spun, searching for a rational explanation. Did Rhys orchestrate this? Did he send this man to mock me? Or was my stepbrother, Declan, in on the joke? The paranoia squeezed my chest until I could barely draw a breath.

Anger flared deep in my chest. It was hot, blinding, and swift, overriding my basic sense of self-preservation. I closed the distance, stepping right into his personal space.

"Are you the cleanup crew?" I snapped. I tilted my head back to meet his piercing blue stare. "Did Rhys send you here to sweep his mess under the rug? Or did Declan hire you to make sure the pathetic ex-girlfriend doesn't embarrass herself at his big game? Is this your idea of entertainment?"

Kaelen did not flinch. He did not step back. Instead, a dark amusement danced in his eyes. He was clearly enjoying this. He was savoring the sight of my messy unraveling.

His lips curved into a wicked, knowing smirk.

An urge surged through my veins. I wanted to slap that arrogant expression right off his face. My palm itched with the need to strike him, to wipe away his smug superiority. But right beneath that anger, buried under the humiliation, was a much darker, much more twisted impulse. I wanted to kiss him. I wanted to grab the back of his neck, pull his mouth down to mine, and lose myself in the raw magnetism he radiated.

Not knowing which impulse was stronger genuinely terrified me.

"Rhys Kincaid is irrelevant to what is happening between us right now." His voice dropped to a lower, rougher octave, vibrating through my chest. "But I do have a proposal."

"A proposal." I repeated the word flatly.

"Yes." Kaelen held my gaze.

I was rooted to the spot. An overwhelming, magnetic need to understand what this gorgeous, intimidating stranger wanted kept my feet firmly planted on the carpet. I could not walk away. The mystery of his intentions held me hostage.

He took a slow, predatory step forward.

My breath hitched. I moved backward on pure instinct, needing space to think, needing air in my lungs. He matched my movement, taking another step. I took another step back.

My spine collided with the cold, solid wall. The smooth wallpaper offered no escape.

I gasped softly. I had backed myself into a corner without even noticing. He stopped just inches away, leaving me caged in by his massive frame and his radiating body heat. He did not even need to touch me to trap me. The sheer size of his broad shoulders blocked out the rest of the lavish suite. I was engulfed in the spicy, clean scent of his cologne. It was intoxicating and overwhelming, scrambling my thoughts just when I needed them most.

"Date me." He demanded.

The two words hung heavily in the air. My brain stuttered to a halt. The gears ground together, sparking and failing to process the command.

"What?" I blinked at him. My eyes were wide with shock.

"Be my public partner." He did not break eye contact. His tone remained dead serious. "Fake date me. We attend events together. We build your profile. We make Rhys Kincaid regret every single decision he has ever made in his pathetic life."

I stared at the firm line of his jaw, waiting for the punchline. He wanted me to be his public partner. A fake girlfriend.

"Does it matter if it is fake?" He tilted his head, unfazed by my clear disbelief. "The result will be the same. Rhys suffers. You move on looking like you upgraded. Everyone wins."

It sounded insane. I could not fathom this reality. Why would a man who looked like he had walked straight out of my most inappropriate, secret fantasies offer this arrangement to a stranger? He was wealthy, powerful, and devastatingly attractive. He could summon an army of supermodels with a single phone call.

"Why would you do this?" I pressed my palms flat against the wall, fighting the intoxicating haze of his physical proximity. "You do not owe me anything. We do not know each other. This makes no sense."

"Because it benefits me too." The dark amusement faded from his features, replaced by something cold and calculating. "Let's just say Rhys Kincaid and I have unfinished business. Having you firmly by my side will greatly speed up certain plans I have in motion."

"Plans." I echoed. "What kind of plans?"

"The kind I am not going to explain."

"So you want me to agree to a fake relationship with a stranger, for mysterious reasons you refuse to share, just to get back at an ex I am trying to forget." I shook my head. "That sounds insane."

"I know everything about Rhys Kincaid." Kaelen leaned in. His imposing frame cast a dark shadow over me. "Including the fact that he has been obsessing over me for five years."

My eyes widened. The weaponization of that information was brilliant. If Rhys was truly obsessed with Kaelen, seeing me on his arm would systematically destroy Rhys's fragile ego.

"This is not a game, Clara." He leaned even closer. He hovered so close I could count his dark eyelashes. His breath fanned across my skin, warm and minty. In an intimate whisper, he laid his trap. "This is power. You take control of the narrative. You show Rhys, and the rest of the world, that you are not disposable. You show him you are someone he never deserved in the first place."

God, he was good at this. His manipulative words wrapped around me like an inescapable trap. He knew exactly which buttons to push, which deep-seated insecurities to target. He was handing me the ultimate revenge on a silver platter.

And the worst part was that it was working on me. The temptation was a living, breathing thing wrapping around my heart.

My imagination betrayed me, painting a vivid picture of the future he was offering. I could clearly picture walking into the crowded arena with my hand tucked into the crook of Kaelen Voss's arm. I could see the blinding flashes of the paparazzi cameras capturing our every move. I could imagine the public shock rippling through our circles, the frantic whispers, the gossip spreading like wildfire across social media. But most importantly, I could picture the deep, visceral regret contorting Rhys’s face when he saw me standing tall next to the man he worshipped and envied. Rhys would realize he had thrown away something valuable. The sheer, vindictive satisfaction of that moment tasted like sweet, potent poison. I wanted to drink it down.

But the thick, suffocating fog of his temptation cracked. The heavy thud of my own heartbeat grounded me. Logic clawed its way back through the intoxicating haze of his physical proximity.

I forced myself to focus on the reality of the situation. I refused to be a pawn in another man's game. I had survived one manipulative relationship, and I was not about to walk blindly into a fake one just to soothe my bruised ego.

"What do you really get out of this?" I demanded. My voice rang with sudden, sharp clarity, rejecting his vague excuse. "I do not buy your unfinished business story. There is something else. You are hiding something. A man like you does not propose a fake relationship with a stranger unless the payoff is massive. So what is it? What do you actually want from me?"

His jaw tightened. The muscles in his neck jumped under the harsh lights.

For a fleeting moment, the heavy silence stretched between us. I thought he would deflect. I expected him to refuse to surrender his control, to spin another web of half-truths to keep me in the dark.

Instead, his lips parted. He smiled.

It was a slow, dangerous smile. It transformed his handsome features into something feral and lethal. It was the exact kind of smile that made me think of wolves cornering their prey in the dead of winter. It was the smile of an apex predator—something that looked breathtakingly beautiful right before it bit.
