Kaia slept soundly on her bed, her chest rising and falling with every breath. I stared at her intently, almost afraid that she would disappear if I looked away.

I placed my hand on hers and stared out the window. Outside, the night sky stretched endlessly.

There was a gentle knock on the door.

“Zipporah?” I called.

Doctor Zipporah pushed open the door to the room,
