Shattered Faith

Darius turned his back and walked away without a second glance. The heavy thud of his fading footsteps echoed like a death knell in the narrow hallway. Sloane remained pinned against the wall, a pale and shaking shell of the proud woman she used to be. The lingering sting of his rejection burned like acid in her veins, choking the breath from her lungs. Before she could even process the shattering of her soul, rough hands clamped onto her arms. The werewolf guards offered no pity. They dragged her away, hauling her fragile form down into the suffocating depths of the underground prison.

The descent felt like stepping into an open grave. The air down here hit her lungs like a wet rag. It smelled of stagnant mold, dried blood, and raw despair. The guards threw her into a crowded cell and locked the heavy iron gate behind her.

Exhausted and battered by the severance of her mate bond, Sloane collapsed onto the hard stone floor. Sleep claimed her for only a fleeting moment.

The chilling sound of low snickering jolted her awake.

Sloane snapped her eyes open. A tight circle of malicious, feral smiles loomed over her in the dim, flickering light of the cell. These were hardened criminals, their eyes glinting with predatory intent. Panic spiked in her chest. Sloane scrambled backward, ignoring the scrape of the rough floor against her skin, until her spine pressed flat against the damp stone wall.

"Don't get any closer, or I'll call the guards." She commanded, trying to inject the lost authority of an Alpha's daughter into her trembling voice.

The female werewolves burst into harsh, mocking laughter. The sound bounced off the cramped stone walls, grating against her sensitive ears. Their burly leader stepped forward. A cruel sneer twisted her scarred face, making her look like a starved beast ready to pounce. Without a second of hesitation, the leader swung her heavy hand and slapped Sloane hard across the cheek.

"What did you say? Call the guards? Go ahead and call the guards!" The leader taunted, spitting onto the stone floor in disgust.

The harsh impact sent a ringing buzz through Sloane's ears. The copper taste of blood flooded her mouth. Adrenaline pumped through her veins, waking the dormant pride of her lineage. She pushed herself off the damp wall in a sudden, explosive burst of defiance. Sloane swung her arm with all her remaining strength and slapped the leader right back.

The resounding crack left the cell dead silent for a split second. The other inmates stared in sheer shock.

Then, the burly werewolf's eyes flashed a dangerous, feral red with fury.

"Fuck! You bitch! Beat her! I'll cripple you! Alpha Darius said that we didn't need to show her any mercy. Spare her life, we can beat her as much as we want!" The leader roared, thick spit flying from her curled lips.

Those specific words pierced straight through Sloane's chest. The blood froze in her veins, and her breath hitched in her throat. Darius had explicitly ordered this brutalization. Her fated mate wanted her tortured.

Trembling uncontrollably, she abandoned her fight. She scrambled past the angry inmates and rushed toward the cell gate. Her knuckles turned stark white as she clenched the rusted iron bars, pressing her bruised face between them.

"Help! Help! They beat me!" Sloane screamed into the dark, echoing corridor.

She pleaded not out of a fear of the impending physical pain. She screamed because a desperate, dying sliver of faith told her that her fated mate wouldn't truly be this monstrously cruel. She clung to the delusional hope that Darius would hear her and stop this living nightmare.

The corridor remained hollow and empty. No guards came to her aid. No savior stepped out of the shadows.

A massive, rough hand yanked on her blonde hair. The brutal force ripped her backward, peeling her fingers off the iron bars. Sloane crashed heavily onto the unforgiving stone floor, the sudden impact knocking the wind from her lungs.

The pack of hardened prisoners descended upon her like starved beasts fighting over a scrap of meat. Heavy boots and hardened fists rained down on her fragile body. They kicked her ribs. They punched her face. They stomped on her limbs without a shred of mercy. The sound of her own pained groans mixed with the sickening thud of flesh hitting bone.

Deep inside, her inner wolf whimpered in silence. It was already profoundly heartbroken and severely weakened by Darius's brutal rejection. The once-proud beast was too incapacitated to help her shift. It could not push a single ounce of healing energy to mend her cracked ribs and bruised internal organs.

Overwhelmed by the endless barrage of blows, Sloane stopped struggling. She curled into a tight fetal position, throwing her arms over her head to protect her skull. The physical agony washed over her in relentless waves, but the devastating psychological realization cut so much deeper. Darius had meticulously ordained this exact torture.

The attackers finally grew tired. Panting and laughing among themselves, they retreated to their respective bunks. Left bleeding and weeping silently on the freezing floor, Sloane agonized over the sheer injustice of it all.

She was Darius's fated mate. The Moon Goddess had destined them for each other. Yet, she bore the entirety of his psychotic wrath for Valeria's tragic fate.

In the pitch blackness of the dungeon, her mind replayed the truth. She had never laid a hand on Valeria. Valeria was sweet but foolishly curious. It was Valeria who had suggested exploring the dangerous Obsidian Forest where rogue wolves lingered, craving a taste of adventure. Sloane had simply been late to their meeting because her car unexpectedly broke down on the dirt road.

Because Sloane possessed the proud, strong demeanor of an Alpha's daughter, and Valeria was notoriously sweet and timid, society eagerly swallowed the damning lie. The pack believed Sloane maliciously paid rogues to humiliate and rape the innocent girl. They needed a villain, and Sloane fit the profile perfectly.

Bleeding out on the stone floor, her tears mixing with the grime, she understood the grim, inescapable reality. Darius didn't just want her physically beaten into submission. He had systematically erased every single trace of her existence. He severed her ties to the Crystal Creek Pack. He destroyed her education records. He annihilated her bright future.

She was now nothing but a nameless, punching-bag criminal.

Curling into a tight, shivering ball in the suffocating dark, she surrendered to her bleak, hopeless fate. The pain in her body dulled into a numb, freezing ache. Her eyes fluttered shut, welcoming the endless abyss.

The harsh clang of the cell doors echoed through the damp dungeon the next morning. Footsteps shuffled across the stone floor. A rough hand aggressively shoved her unmoving, cold shoulder.

"Hey, wake up! Go clean the toilet! Wait... ah! She is dead!" The prisoner shrieked in pure horror, stumbling backward away from the body.

A bolder prisoner rushed over from the other side of the cell. She squatted down, pressing her dirty fingers beneath Sloane's bruised and bloody nose. The cell held its collective breath for a tense second. Then, she detected a faint, ragged breath escaping Sloane's lips.

"Quiet! She's still alive! Call the guards!" The woman shouted at the top of her lungs, waving frantically toward the iron gate.

Sloane had miraculously survived her first night, but she was trapped in a living hell with no way out.
