Unbroken Pride

The heavy iron gates of the Iron Fang Pack slammed shut with a resounding clang of finality. The sound echoed through the desolate square, locking Sloane outside in the torrential, freezing rain. A discarded, damp handkerchief lay on the wet pavement. Darius had callously thrown it at her moments before retreating to his estate. Sloane forced her stiff fingers to reach down and pick it up. She gripped the ruined fabric tight in her fist, letting the icy water wash over her knuckles.

The mate bond, now severed by his formal rejection, wreaked havoc on her physical and mental state. A suffocating, agonizing weight crushed her chest, making every breath feel like inhaling shards of glass. It felt as though a jagged blade was twisting right where her heart used to beat. Deep within her consciousness, her inner wolf screamed in primitive agony. The beast thrashed and wailed, desperately urging her to swallow her Alpha-born pride, drop to her bleeding knees, and beg her mate for forgiveness to stop the endless pain.

"I do not need his forgiveness, I did nothing wrong," Sloane silently communicated to her weeping wolf.

She clenched her jaw until her teeth ached. Her nails bit so hard into her palms that they drew fresh blood, mixing with the relentless rain. She was the daughter of a proud Alpha. She commanded her trembling spine to remain rigidly straight against the battering wind. She only needed one fleeting moment to explain the truth. She had zero involvement in the horrific fate that befell her friend, Valeria. She refused to take the fall for a crime she did not commit.

Fueled by sheer stubbornness, Sloane remained planted in the middle of the desolate square for the entirety of the unforgiving night. The freezing rain assaulted her. The brutal storm soaked her shattered, bloody clothes, chilling her deep to the bone. Every gust of wind threatened to knock her over, but she refused to yield an inch. Her muscles cramped and her vision blurred, but she maintained her ground. She would not beg, and she would not run.

When the bleak, gray morning finally broke through the heavy clouds, the massive doors of the villa opened. Beta Kaelen emerged from the grand estate. He walked toward her under the shelter of a large black umbrella, his brown hair immaculately groomed despite the dreadful weather. His face remained a mask of disdain. He stopped a few feet away and casually tossed a dry garment at her shivering body.

Sloane fumbled with numb, soaked hands to catch the dark fabric, clutching it to her chest. Refusing to show weakness, she looked straight at him. Her trembling shoulders betrayed her exhaustion, but she held her head high.

"I want to see him," she demanded. Her voice was hoarse, rough from the cold, but her tone remained unwavering.

Kaelen narrowed his eyes. He coldly recited his Alpha's message, his voice devoid of any empathy.

"Alpha Darius said that your presence ruined the view here. He did not want you to ruin his mood too."

Sloane did not flinch. She simply closed her eyes for a brief second, letting the morning rain wash away the silent tears mingling on her pale cheeks. The coldness of her fated mate was a familiar blade, but the unyielding rejection made the wound unbearable. Slowly, she raised her chin to meet Kaelen's fiercely indifferent gaze.

"Kaelen, believe me or not, I did not pay those rogues to hurt Valeria, and I will not take the blame."

Her unyielding defiance acted as a catalyst. Kaelen’s composed poker face shattered. His expression twisted into one of pure, venomous hatred. He stepped closer, abandoning the safety of his umbrella, his voice shaking with intense rage.

"Valeria was my younger sister! She was always a sweet, innocent girl. She had never been to a pub and never gone alone into the Obsidian Forest. But then she was found brutally assaulted and murdered in the dark depths of those woods, right where the vile rogues linger! We checked Valeria's phone, Miss Falkner. Before she died, she sent a final, fatal text message to you. It read, 'I have arrived. Where are you, Sloane?'" Kaelen practically spat the words at her, his eyes blazing with unleashed fury.

Sloane stared back, the damning words turning her blood to ice.

"You orchestrated this gruesome murder out of deep-seated jealousy! Valeria was Darius's cherished girlfriend. You were nothing more than an unacknowledged, unwanted mate trying to force your way into his life. You wanted her to disappear so you could take her place. You make me sick!" Kaelen accused, stepping even closer.

Sloane stood speechless under the downpour. The horrific reality of the situation pinned her in place. Valeria was Kaelen's sweet sister, and she had been the woman Darius truly loved. The unacknowledged mate was standing right here, hated to the core by the men who meant the most to the fallen girl.

Kaelen sneered, stepping back to deliver the final, devastating blow entrusted to him by his Alpha. "Miss Falkner, you should leave. Alpha Darius said, 'It should have been you.'"

The cruelty of those words pierced straight through Sloane's chest like a physical blade. The last remnants of her adrenaline faded into the chilling rain. The immense weight of the false accusation and Darius's hatred finally broke her stance. Her numbed legs gave out beneath her. She crashed painfully back down onto the hard, wet pavement, her raw knees scraping against the jagged stone.

The echoes of Darius’s cruel, hateful wish mocked her ringing ears. *It should have been you.*

A sound escaped her throat. It was a dry, bitter, broken laugh that shook her exhausted shoulders. She tilted her head back, letting the freezing rain batter her face as her mind fractured under the strain.

"Valeria, you were dead and I became a murderer," she whispered to the empty air. The absurdity and blatant injustice of her reality settled over her heavy heart, extinguishing the last flicker of hope she held onto.

High above the tragic scene, standing silently behind the expansive glass of the second-floor windows, was Darius. He was barefoot, clad only in a loose black nightgown, his posture rigid and commanding. With frozen, unreadable eyes, he looked down at her crumpled, laughing figure in the relentless rain. His jaw was clenched tight, his expression giving away nothing of the storm that raged within his own territory.

Behind him, the heavy oak door of his spacious bedroom opened with a soft click. Kaelen approached the doorway, shaking the excess water from his dark coat.

"Alpha Darius, I have passed your words to Miss Falkner," Kaelen reported quietly to his superior.
