The water always calmed me.

I couldn’t explain it—not really. Wolves weren’t supposed to feel at home near rivers or lakes. We were meant for forests, for the rush of wind through trees, for the raw bite of earth under our paws. And yet, every time I sat by the river, the gnawing in my chest dulled.
