The Reluctant Master
Riding the high of a twelve-game winning streak in the underground arena, Kaelen Vance settled deep into the passenger seat of the car. The heavy scent of smoke and sweat from the fighting pits slowly faded, replaced by the clean leather interior of the vehicle. The adrenaline pumped through his veins, making his fingertips tingle as the neon city lights blurred past his window. He turned his head to look at the man steering the car through the midnight traffic.
"My mastery of the Mizongbu footwork and the Eight Trigrams stick technique is getting solid. I am way more proficient than I was just a few days ago. The way I predicted that frost mage's blink path tonight? Pure instinct." Kaelen let out a breathless, enthusiastic laugh, his chest swelling with genuine gratitude. He leaned forward slightly, looking at his boss with nothing but respect. "And it is all because you teach me so well, Master."
Monroe Jace slammed his foot down on the brakes. The car jerked abruptly, pulling to the side of the empty, rain-slicked street. The previously relaxed expression on the older man's face darkened into a severe scowl. The sudden shift in atmosphere sucked all the breathable air out of the confined space.
"Who told you that you could call me your master? When did I ever agree to accept a disciple?" Monroe gripped the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned bone-white, his voice sharp and unyielding in the dim light of the dashboard.
Kaelen flinched hard, startled by the intense reaction. A sudden, sharp pang of disappointment struck deep in his chest. He realized instantly that he had crossed an invisible boundary. He had foolishly assumed their late-night training sessions and shared arena victories meant a deeper mentor-student bond, but the imposing wall Monroe just threw up proved otherwise. Kaelen looked down at his lap, his crestfallen face hidden in the shadows. The thrilling euphoria of his arena victories turned to bitter ash in his mouth.
Monroe caught sight of the young man's crushed demeanor in the rearview mirror. He let out a heavy sigh, his stiff posture relaxing against the leather seat just as fast as he had flared up. The biting anger melted away, replaced by a softer resignation.
"Listen to me. Since you are an employee of my library, I will continue to help you improve your mechanics. I will not leave you to figure the game out alone. But regarding the formal matter of master and apprentice, I do not want to think about it. Do not entertain the thought again. From now on, you just continue calling me Brother Monroe." Monroe put the car back in gear, the engine purring to life as he pulled back onto the main road.
"I understand, Brother Monroe." Kaelen stared out the window into the passing darkness, resolving to keep his professional distance despite the lingering ache of rejection. The rest of the ride passed in a heavy, contemplative silence.
Later that evening, back in the quiet confines of his modest apartment, Kaelen sat down in front of his glowing monitor. He stretched his stiff neck and logged into the game as AuraApex. The moment his character materialized in the digital world, his user interface was bombarded by a flood of urgent messages. The notification chime rang endlessly in his headset, creating a chaotic wall of sound. He opened his inbox to find a manic wall of text from the popular streamer, Night Dreamer.
Reluctantly agreeing to meet her in the bustling Ethereal Square, Kaelen navigated his avatar through the dense crowds of players. He spotted her standing near the massive central fountain. Her digital avatar was sporting a new green gauze skirt and her hair was tied up in a fresh ponytail, standing out among the standard-issue armor of the surrounding crowds. She waved her arms frantically the second she saw him approach, begging for his attention in the middle of the crowded plaza.
"I have been waiting forever for you to get online! You logged off without saying a single word last time, and you never took the Blazing Fire Spirit Stone. You need to take it to settle the debt right now." Night Dreamer initiated a trade window, placing the glowing red stone into the empty slot.
"I told you before that I do not need the stone. Why are you so insistent on pushing this item onto my account?" Kaelen crossed his arms, staring blankly at his screen as he ignored the trade prompt.
"It is the iron rule of my stream! I do not want to owe you anything, and my chat needs to see me pay my debts fairly." Night Dreamer canceled and re-initiated the trade, her digital avatar shifting its weight anxiously from side to side.
Kaelen clicked accept, watching the rare stone drop into his digital inventory bag. He just wanted to end the tedious interaction and get back to his solo training regimen.
"Fine, I will take it. We are even now. I am leaving." Kaelen turned his character toward the glowing blue teleportation waypoint.
"Wait! Can I ask you a huge favor?" Night Dreamer ran forward, physically blocking his path with her character model.
Kaelen paused, letting out a tired sigh into his microphone. Her true, calculating motive was surfacing to the top of the conversation.
"Just tell me what is going on." Kaelen kept his hands resting lightly on his keyboard, ready to dash away at a moment's notice.
"Can you please refresh the dungeon with me a few more times? After you joined my team last time, the viewership in my live broadcast room skyrocketed to unprecedented numbers. But let me tell you the harsh truth—they are not coming for me anymore. They are coming for you. They want to see your elite combat skills. Please, I just need you to help me maintain my audience." Night Dreamer triggered a pleading emote, her character clasping its hands together in a desperate beg.
"I am not interested in being your performing monkey. You are a veteran player and a prominent host. You can clear these dungeons without my help." Kaelen delivered the cold refusal without a second thought. He was aware of his own grueling training schedule and had zero desire to cater to a demanding audience.
Night Dreamer paced back and forth, her desperation peaking as she typed furiously over the voice channel.
"I will give you all the convoy fees from the novice players! And I will give you my share of the rare material drops! You will get the first pick of any good items that spawn in the loot pool!" Night Dreamer threw out a massive financial lure, her digital voice cracking with urgency.
Kaelen stopped moving. His eyes scanned the resource requirements on his secondary monitor. Building his new account was draining his in-game funds at an alarming rate. The promise of free convoy fees and guaranteed rare materials was a blinding temptation. He desperately needed those exact resources to upgrade his gear.
"Okay! Deal." Kaelen clicked the party invite, unaware of the exhausting trap he was stepping into.
Night Dreamer immediately broadcasted his return to her massive audience. The chat window on Kaelen's secondary screen exploded with a relentless barrage of text as tens of thousands of demanding viewers flooded into the stream. They demanded to see the Mizongbu footwork. They demanded to see the precise execution of the Eight Trigrams stick technique. What was initially promised as just a few quick dungeon runs dragged into an agonizing seven-game marathon.
Night Dreamer was openly and shamelessly using his high-level mechanics to entertain her audience. She pulled in useless, under-leveled novices who paid the premium convoy fee, forcing Kaelen to carry the dead weight through every single boss fight. He executed perfect, high-speed combos, dodging massive area-of-effect spells and managing the enemy aggro while the rest of the team stood safely in the back and cheered. The physical strain of maintaining professional-level actions-per-minute for hours on end began to tear at his wrists. His eyes burned fiercely from staring at the flashing spell effects in his dark room.
After the seventh boss collapsed into a pile of digital loot, a thoroughly exhausted Kaelen finally dropped his aching hands from the mechanical keyboard. The clock on his wall read well past midnight.
"Miss, that is enough. I do not rely on live broadcasts to make a living. I need to sleep." Kaelen keyed his microphone, the exhaustion heavy in his throat as he prepared to log off for the night.
"Oh, come on! The team is making so much money right now. If you play just a little longer, you can earn even more. Look at all the materials you are getting!" Night Dreamer urged him, refusing to queue out of the dungeon instance.
Kaelen checked his inventory bag. The convoy fees amounted to absolute pennies per run when divided up, and the rare materials were low-level garbage that held no real value on the current auction house. He had spent half the night sweating over his keyboard for literal pocket change. He moved his mouse toward the system logout button.
"I am done. I have to go to work in the morning." Kaelen hovered his cursor over the exit prompt.
"Wait! Two thousand dollars in real-world currency. Plus a promised piece of highly coveted orange equipment. Just stay for three more hours. How about that?" Night Dreamer threw out an irresistible bait, her voice dripping with sweet persuasion.
Kaelen stared blankly at the screen. Two thousand dollars was a massive payout. It was more than half of his monthly salary at the library. Coupled with a piece of premium orange-tier gear, it was a financial offer he could not logically ignore. The blinding greed clouded his judgment, washing away the painful ache in his hands.
"Fine. Let us grind through the night." Kaelen pulled his hands back to the keyboard, forcing his tired eyes to focus back on the screen.
The morning sun streamed brightly through the tall windows of the Lore Tome Pavilion, casting long shadows across the dusty floorboards. Kaelen stood behind the front counter, his shoulders slouched and his eyes rimmed with dark circles. His physical and mental stamina were drained. He looked like a walking zombie as he stared blankly at the stack of returned encyclopedias.
Monroe walked out from the back office, carrying a fresh cup of coffee. He took one look at Kaelen's miserable state before bursting into uproarious, booming laughter. The sound echoed loudly through the quiet confines of the library.
"You spent half the night playing dungeons with someone, didn't you? Hahaha, you little kid! Look at you! You now finally understand that there is no such thing as a free lunch in this world!" Monroe slapped the wooden counter, highly amused by Kaelen's obvious suffering.
Kaelen grimaced, rubbing his throbbing temples with the palms of his hands. He had learned his brutal lesson the hard way. The promised two thousand dollars was a manipulative scam. Night Dreamer had only transferred five hundred dollars to his account, casually informing him that the rest of the massive payout would be paid out in small installments. He would have to grind for another three hours day and night just to see the next fraction of his promised payment. She had effectively locked him into a vicious cycle of digital indentured servitude.
To make matters worse, the hyped orange equipment turned out to be a worthless, low-stat Level 10 item. It was a piece of trash that could not even be sold for the price of a basic health potion on the market. It was somehow worth even less than the Blazing Fire Spirit Stone he had tried to reject in the first place.
"I will never deal with that deceitful streamer again. I am done with her." Kaelen muttered under his breath, his chest filled with a bitter regret. He had foolishly allowed his desperation for resources to blind him to the obvious trap. He picked up a stack of heavy books and began dragging his feet toward the reference section, deciding to focus solely on his quiet, repetitive afternoon shift sorting books.
The library remained comfortably silent as the long afternoon wore on. Kaelen found a soothing rhythm in organizing the wooden shelves, the tactile sensation of the old paper helping to ground his frazzled nerves. Just as he was placing a heavy historical tome onto the top shelf, the brass chime on the front door rang out into the quiet room.
Kaelen turned around, fully expecting to see a regular elderly customer. Instead, a familiar, timid face broke the tranquility of the pavilion. It was Zane Sutton.
Zane was a fellow substitute player from Kaelen's old professional team. They had joined the competitive roster around the exact same time and bonded over their shared misery on the bench. Zane was a naturally honest and fearful person, which unfortunately made him the primary target for the team captain's daily cruelty. Historically, Zane suffered even worse physical and mental bullying from Caleb Brant than Kaelen ever did.
Zane stood awkwardly near the grand entrance, his shoulders hunched inward. He looked nervously over his shoulder toward the busy street before stepping further into the library. He was wracked with visible guilt, refusing to make eye contact with his old friend.
"Zane? What are you doing here?" Kaelen put down the books in his hands and walked slowly over to the front counter.
"I came to see you, Kaelen. I need to tell you something important." Zane pinched his fingers together, a nervous habit he developed during their stressful time in the team house.
"Come sit down. Tell me what is going on." Kaelen gestured toward a pair of comfortable reading chairs near the large window.
Zane shook his head, far too anxious to sit down. He took a deep, shaky breath, his voice trembling as he spoke.
"I do not want to lie to you, Kaelen. But I am terrified of Caleb's wrath. He specifically ordered me to come here. He told me to investigate your current living situation and to discover exactly which new server district you are currently playing in. He wants to hunt you down in the game and ruin your new account." Zane rushed the words out, the heavy confession hanging thickly in the air between them.
Kaelen leaned against the edge of a sturdy reading table, calmly absorbing the information. Caleb Brant was still holding a massive grudge. The arrogant captain was not satisfied with just pushing Kaelen off the professional team; he wanted to destroy his digital life as well.
"I know they saw your old account has not been online. They figured we still talk behind their backs. I considered lying to Caleb to protect you. I was just going to tell him you quit gaming altogether and that you were just working a normal job now." Zane looked down at his worn sneakers, deeply ashamed of his forced position as the captain's errand boy.
Instead of feeling angry at the betrayal, Kaelen felt a sudden, electric surge of energy. His lingering exhaustion vanished, replaced by an inferno of competitive fire. A fearless smile spread wide across his face, and he threw his head back, bursting into loud, genuine laughter that shocked Zane to his core.
"How is it possible? Do you think they will believe it? Listen to me, tell the truth, tell Caleb Brant, I will wait for him in the new district!" Kaelen stepped forward and clamped a reassuring hand onto Zane's trembling shoulder, his eyes burning with defiant, fearless anticipation.
