Mastering the Phantom Step
His fingertips struck the mechanical keys in a rapid, rhythmic sequence. He filtered out the chaotic shouts of Caleb’s squad and the heavy thud of the giant python thrashing against the narrow canyon walls. Kaelen Vance’s mind raced, recalling the specific instructional video Monroe Jace had sent him earlier that day. The footage featured a veteran stalker seamlessly executing the elusive movement skill known as the Phantom Step.
He had struggled all day to memorize the punishingly demanding keystroke sequence. The technique required flawless execution. If a single finger slipped from the directional keys or broke the rhythm, the connection would sever, leaving the player a sitting duck. Facing five relentless enemies with no chest armor to absorb a hit, Kaelen knew he had no margin for error.
Left, left, left, left, front, back, left, front, back, back, left, front.
His hands blurred over the keyboard. Miraculously, in the heat of life-or-death combat, he found the perfect rhythm. The rigid, charred character model of AuraApex suddenly blurred into an intangible afterimage. His digital body tilted from side to side in a mesmerizing sway, dodging a flurry of physical strikes that should have ended his life. Like a bolt of lightning, AuraApex darted through the dense, tangled forest shrubs.
"What the hell? Where did he go?" Wyatt swung his greatsword, his blade passing through empty air.
"Catch him! Why are you just standing there? Seal his movement!" Caleb shouted in panic.
The squad scrambled, swinging their weapons and casting quick binding spells at the shifting afterimages. Every attack missed. AuraApex moved too fast, weaving back and forth among the thick trunks and low-hanging branches. The dense woods gave Kaelen the perfect concealment. His fingers maintained the relentless rhythm on the keys, not daring to relax for a fraction of a second.
"This is the Phantom Step! Brother Brant, I can't lock onto his coordinates!" one of the ambushers cried out over the voice channel.
"Don't panic! I don't believe he can keep using it without dropping the combo. Don't stop chasing him and wait for his fingers to slip!" Caleb barked, adjusting his grip on his weapon.
Kaelen stared at his monitor, his eyes wide and focused. He steered AuraApex out of the thickest part of the shrubs and made a straight line for the glowing portal of the dungeon entrance.
"He is almost at the entrance! What should we do?" Wyatt yelled.
"Warlock, amplify your moves! Seal the entrance to the dungeon!" Caleb roared, his voice cracking with desperation.
The squad’s Warlock halted his pursuit and raised his staff high into the air. Overhead, thick thunderclouds rolled across the virtual sky. A dazzling, intricate magic circle began to manifest right in front of the swirling dungeon vortex.
"Block him! Make sure to drag him down until the magic circle is formed! Don't let him cross that line!" Caleb commanded at the top of his lungs.
"How much longer?" Wyatt asked, swinging wildly at another passing afterimage.
"Five seconds left!" the Warlock chanted. "Five, four, three, two..."
At the final second, a deafening roar echoed through the forest. A brilliant beam of light crashed down from the sky, locking the massive sealing circle heavily into place. The barrier solidified with a resonant hum, casting an impenetrable wall of radiant energy across the canyon path.
"It's done!" Caleb pumped his fist, cheering his victory. He watched the dust settle, ready to corner his prey against the magical barrier.
"Brother Brant, the seal missed him!" the Warlock gasped.
Caleb froze. He blinked, peering through the glowing barrier.
AuraApex was already standing safely behind the impenetrable wall of light. His charred character model stood tall right in front of the dungeon vortex. Kaelen turned his character around to face the squad. With a mocking, triumphant smile, AuraApex raised a casual middle finger aimed directly at Caleb.
Before Caleb could even unleash the string of curses building in his throat, Kaelen’s figure vanished into the portal. The screen returned to a serene quiet, leaving Caleb seething in impotent, screaming rage outside the sealed entrance.
The very next day, Kaelen walked into the quiet warmth of the Loretome Bookstore. The scent of old paper and polished wood offered a stark contrast to the adrenaline-fueled chaos of his previous night.
"Did you stay up all night last night? The dark circles under your eyes are so heavy." Monroe asked softly. He stood behind the wooden counter, casually wiping down the surface with a rag.
Kaelen dropped his bag near the staff room door and leaned against the counter. "Yes, Brother Monroe. Last night was so exciting. You wouldn't believe the ambush I ran into."
Kaelen animatedly recounted his narrow escape, detailing the trap Caleb had set, the destruction of his orange gear, and his sudden, combat-forged mastery of the Phantom Step. He explained how he had managed to string the exact sequence together just when he thought he was dead.
Monroe carefully masked his profound internal shock. He kept his expression neutral, offering only a soft chuckle.
"It seems that sometimes, you still have to force yourself into a corner to truly learn. Okay, go get to work quickly. The new inventory needs sorting." Monroe waved a hand, dismissing Kaelen toward the back shelves.
As Kaelen walked away, Monroe let his smile fade. Beneath his calm exterior, he was secretly astounded. The rhetoric about needing a little force was just a cover. Someone who wasn't proficient in swimming couldn't just learn to swim by being thrown into a raging river. Even though Kaelen had a solid foundation in Omni God, executing an incredibly advanced, frame-perfect technique like the Phantom Step in such a short amount of time was terrifying. His potential and learning speed were beyond anything Monroe had ever witnessed.
Logging back into Omni God at noon, Kaelen efficiently navigated the bustling streets of Ethereal City. Stripped of his high-tier gear and wealth on his main account, his character was now clad in heavily worn green leather armor. He held a basic black iron rod in his hand. Compared to his previous imposing figure, his current appearance was painfully simple.
The city was crowded with people. Newcomers looked around in wide-eyed wonder, while veterans rushed through the streets working on their daily tasks. Before reaching level 10, all players were restricted to Ethereal City. Only after completing the tedious novice missions could they step out into the Land of Ethereal Void.
Kaelen ignored the dazzling array of plaques and real-world advertisements lining the shop fronts. He focused entirely on the grind. The novice tasks were straightforward, designed purely to familiarize players with the game's core mechanics. He sprinted from NPC to NPC, gathering herbs, delivering letters, and striking training dummies.
In less than two hours, he had swiftly completed the mundane questline. A golden light washed over AuraApex, signaling his aggressive push to level 10. Now that he had reached the required milestone, he could finally take on dungeon missions to accelerate his leveling.
He navigated through the dense crowd toward the dungeon NPC. This was the most congested area in the novice zone, packed with players shouting for groups.
"Are there any friends who want to join the convoy? The convoy will leave soon!"
"Need a healer for the lava run! Linking gear in chat!"
Listening to the chaotic shouts, Kaelen felt a wave of nostalgia. It reminded him of his very first days in Omni God. He stood near the swirling dungeon portal, silently observing the area to figure out which group might need an extra damage dealer.
Suddenly, a female character stepped directly into his field of vision. She wore a bright pink short skirt, had her hair tied in long twin ponytails, and carried a large, ornate guqin strapped to her back. Kaelen quickly glanced at her hovering player information.
Name: Night Dreamer. Occupation: Demon Musician. Level: 13.
"Hi, are you a newbie? Are you here to see the team?" Night Dreamer asked cheerfully.
Kaelen paused, realizing his silent observation of the crowd had made him look like a lost novice.
"Looking at your basic green armor, you must be a novice. Don't be afraid, I will protect you!" She puffed out her chest with exaggerated confidence.
Before Kaelen could formulate a polite denial and walk away, a team invitation abruptly popped up on the center of his screen.
"Come on, why are you hesitating? The first convoy of the day is free of charge. You won't find a better deal out here." Night Dreamer urged, stepping closer to his character model.
Kaelen stared at the prompt. He was mildly amused by her overconfidence. He genuinely needed a group to enter the dungeon anyway, and arguing with her seemed like a waste of time. He clicked accept.
His name joined a ragtag list of three other uncoordinated, low-level novices in the party frame. Night Dreamer immediately took the lead, proudly marching their group toward the city gate.
"You guys are all newbies, right? Well, it doesn't matter. I'll enter the dungeon later and you all just need to follow my instructions." She spoke over the voice channel, her tone full of self-importance.
"Miss, we are all newcomers. Is it really okay?" one of the party members asked nervously.
"Of course! I am an experienced veteran player. I know these paths like the back of my hand. But as I said before, this first run is a freebie. Future dungeon runs will cost a premium fee, so pay close attention and learn while you can."
"No problem. As long as you take care of us, we are willing to pay for the next rounds," another novice replied eagerly.
"Hehe, okay, let's go to the dungeon entrance now." Night Dreamer led the group out of the safe zone and up the rocky path toward the Ethereal Void instance.
The swirling, fiery vortex of the dungeon entrance loomed ahead. The heat radiating from the portal distorted the digital air. Kaelen gripped his iron rod, ready to finally get some real combat experience on his new account.
Just as they reached the edge of the vortex, Night Dreamer suddenly halted her steps. She turned her character around to face the group of novices.
"The dungeon will be available soon. Please pay attention to the anchor! Don't forget to send those gifts, family!" she cheerfully announced over the open microphone.
Kaelen’s face instantly darkened. His stomach sank as the realization hit him. He never expected that he had just blindly stumbled right into a streamer's broadcast team.
