The One-Week Charade

Without waiting for an invitation, Tristan stepped forward and shamelessly barged past Cami, crossing the threshold of her new apartment. The brass doorknob dug into her palm as she stood frozen, watching him stroll into the living room as if he owned the place. He carried an air of entitlement that immediately suffocated the peaceful atmosphere she had built. He turned on his heel, his sharp gaze sweeping over her frame before dropping directly to her now-flat stomach.

"I heard you had a miscarriage," he said.

The words left his mouth with a terrifying lack of empathy. Not a single hint of remorse crossed his aristocratic features. He mentioned the devastating loss of their child with the same casual tone one might use to discuss the incoming weather.

A searing heat flared in Cami's chest. She shut the front door, her knuckles aching from the force of her grip. "What the hell do you want?" she demanded, her voice shaking with raw, unfiltered anger. "And how did you find out where I live?"

"That is irrelevant," Tristan replied, taking a seat on her minimalist sofa and crossing his legs.

"Get out," Cami growled. She marched into the kitchen space, picking up the mug of fresh coffee she had just poured. The ceramic was piping hot against her skin, grounding her in the present moment. "Leave my home right now."

Tristan sighed, dusting an invisible speck of lint from his designer trousers. "My parents have been growing increasingly suspicious about the state of our marriage. I need more time to sort things out. You are coming home with me."

Cami stared at him, bewildered by his sheer audacity. "Excuse me? You expect me to come back to your house after everything you did? After you left me bleeding?"

"Just for one week," Tristan stated, his tone flat and authoritative, ignoring her pain. "My father's birthday party is this weekend. I need you there to play the devoted wife. We will hide our impending divorce from the family. After the party, I will leave you alone."

"No," Cami refused, her answer swift and emphatic. "I am not playing your twisted games anymore. Get out."

Tristan’s jaw tightened. The casual demeanor vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating edge. He stood up, closing the distance between them. "Come home with me, Cami. If you do not, I will ruin your parents' café."

Cami stopped breathing. The threat struck her like a physical blow.

Tristan sneered, reading the sheer panic on her face. "You know I am capable of doing exactly that. One phone call to my associates, and their modest little business goes under. Their livelihood, their life savings, gone in an instant."

A consuming rage exploded inside Cami. Her hands trembled under the weight of her fury. She tightened her grip on the mug, the scalding coffee sloshing dangerously close to the rim. The intense urge to hurl the boiling liquid directly into his arrogant face practically burned her veins. She envisioned the hot liquid scalding his smug expression. But she swallowed the impulse, forcing the bitter taste of defeat down her throat. Tristan had the wealth and influence to crush her innocent family without breaking a sweat. Moreover, his elderly father suffered from a fragile heart condition; exposing Tristan's cruelty right now could trigger a fatal health shock.

She was trapped.

"Fine," Cami forced the word out through gritted teeth, glaring daggers at him. "I will go back with you. One week. But let us get one thing straight." She stepped closer, her eyes blazing with defiance. "We live as ghosts. We do not speak. You do not come near me. If you cross this boundary, I will personally go to your father and tell him exactly what kind of monster his son really is."

Tristan smirked, satisfied with his victory. "Have your bags packed. I will see you tomorrow. I will have the staff prepare the guestroom." He turned and let himself out, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.

The next day, the bright fluorescent lights of the corporate marketing department washed over Cami's desk. She expertly masked her agonizing trauma behind a practiced, polite professional smile, greeting her coworkers as if she had not just endured the worst months of her life. The comforting, mundane routine of drafting emails and organizing spreadsheets provided a temporary shield against the looming dread of moving back in with Tristan.

"Are you feeling alright, Cami?" Derek, a senior analyst, asked as he passed her cubicle. "We were all taken aback when you took sick leave so abruptly."

"I am doing much better, thank you," Cami replied, changing the subject with a bright, rehearsed smile. "Is the manager already here?"

"The managers have an early meeting because the new director is arriving today," Derek informed her.

Cami nodded, unaware of any upcoming leadership changes. The familiar chatter of the office was shattered when the department manager clapped her hands, stepping into the center of the room.

"May I have everyone's attention for a moment?" the manager announced. "I want to formally introduce our brand new marketing director."

Cami glanced up from her monitor. A tall man stepped out from behind the manager, and the breath hitched in Cami's throat. Her eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

He possessed flawless olive skin and striking, piercing green eyes. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence. Cami's heart hammered against her ribs. It was him. The exact same mysterious stranger who had rushed her bleeding, broken body to the hospital months ago.

"Let us welcome Mr. Ronan Kovac," the manager announced.

The room erupted in polite applause. Ronan offered a charismatic smile, shaking hands with the staff nearest to him. His gaze swept over the room, landing squarely on Cami. The easy smile faded into something much more intense. He walked directly toward her desk, his aura radiating authority.

"I see you are doing well, Ms. Delgado," Ronan said, extending his hand.

Cami stared at his outstretched palm. He deliberately used her maiden name. Her mind raced with frantic, panicked questions. Was this meeting a bizarre, cosmic coincidence? Or did this incredibly powerful man somehow know her true identity and marital status? She swallowed the lump in her throat and placed her trembling hand in his firm grip.

"Yes, sir. Thank you," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. She did not dare speak further, paralyzed by nerves.

Ronan turned his attention back to the room, addressing the marketing department with a brief, intimidating speech about upcoming quarter goals. His aura commanded total silence. Once he finished, the staff applauded again. Ronan turned back to the manager.

"Is it okay if I borrow Ms. Delgado? I need a moment to speak with her in private," he requested, his tone leaving no room for argument.

The entire office stared. Cami's cheeks flushed under the weight of their curiosity, but she stood up, smoothing her skirt, and followed the towering man out of the bustling bullpen.

Stepping outside into the quiet, carpeted corridor, the sheer size of the man became even more apparent. Ronan’s broad frame cast a long shadow, making Cami feel incredibly small and exposed.

"Sir, I..." Cami started, nervously stumbling over her words, desperate to fill the heavy silence. "I never got the chance to genuinely thank you for what you did. That fateful day... you saved my life and paid for my care."

Ronan halted. He turned to face her, his sharp green eyes locking onto hers, stopping her rambling dead in its tracks. "Then have lunch with me," he suggested smoothly.

Cami blinked, bewildered by the sudden invitation. "Do you want me to treat you to lunch?"

To her sheer shock, Ronan reached out his hand and gently patted the top of her head, the gesture akin to soothing a cherished pet. Cami stood frozen on the spot, perplexed by the intimate touch from her new boss.

"Come with me," he instructed.

He decisively turned and led her straight down the hall into the executive suite. The secretary scrambled to open the double doors, revealing a newly renovated, luxurious office space overlooking the sweeping city skyline.

"Take a seat. I will just finish what I am doing, and then we will go out for lunch," Ronan said as he walked over to his massive mahogany desk. He picked up a silver pen to sign a stack of corporate documents waiting in a pristine leather tray.

Cami sat on the edge of a plush velvet guest chair, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Her eyes wandered over the modern decor. The silence in the room stretched, thick with unspoken questions. The scratch of his pen against paper echoed in the vast space.

Abruptly, Ronan broke the silence. "How old are you, Ms. Delgado?"

Cami flinched at the sudden question. "I will be twenty-seven this year."

Ronan paused his signing. He set the pen down and looked up, watching her expression change. A subtle smirk played on his lips. "I see. That makes you six years younger."

The casual observation sent a fresh wave of confusion through Cami. She could not hold back her mounting suspicion any longer. She gripped the armrests of her chair, leaning forward slightly. "Uhm, sir, do you possibly know me? Even before you brought me to the hospital months ago?"

Ronan stared at her for a long moment, his gaze unreadable. He deflected the inquiry with a seamless pivot. Pushing his heavy swivel chair back, he stood up and adjusted his cuffs. "I am hungry. Let us continue our conversation later."

Without offering a single scrap of explanation, he smoothly ushered her out of the luxurious office. Cami felt uneasy about the lingering stares of her colleagues as they walked past the front desks, but her anxiety shifted gears when he led her straight down the private elevator to the underground parking garage.

The sleek, black sports car smelled of rich leather and expensive cologne. Cami sat in the passenger seat, gripping her seatbelt as Ronan navigated the powerful vehicle out of the dim garage and into the bright city traffic. She felt incredibly uneasy with his unexpected, personal warmth. The power dynamic between them felt blurred, shifted out of focus by his casual dominance.

She turned her head, studying his sharp profile against the passing city lights. "Is it okay for you to treat me like this? You are acting rather friendly toward me, considering you are my superior."

Ronan drove in silence for a few blocks. He brought the car to a smooth stop at a red light. Resting his large hand on the leather steering wheel, his index finger lightly tapped a rhythmic, hypnotic beat against the material. He turned his head, his green eyes locking onto hers with a predatory gleam.

"Do you want to know why?" he asked, his voice a low rumble in the quiet cabin.

"Yes, sir," she replied, her pulse quickening.

"Because I have a payment to collect from you."

The ominous words hung in the air. Cami shivered internally. The confined space of the car suddenly felt ten degrees colder. A life debt was no trivial matter, and the way he said it made it sound as though he held her very soul in his hands. Driven by her ironclad determination not to go back on her sworn word, she squared her shoulders. She prepared herself to honor whatever he demanded, desperate to settle the score.

"What do you want me to do?" she asked directly, her voice tight. She was unsure of his true, hidden intentions, or what kind of man he truly was behind the designer suit.

The rhythm of his tapping finger stopped. Ronan leaned closer, the scent of bergamot and cedar wrapping around her senses. His lips curled into a slow, deliberate smirk.

"I want you as the repayment for saving your life."
