A Twist of Fate
Elara’s POV:
Three long, transformative months have passed since the night I slipped through the pack’s defenses. I used the chaotic cover of the Midnight Azure Alpha’s grand visit to erase my existence from that hellscape. Looking back, leaving was the only sane choice I ever made. The suffocating cruelty that defined my days as a slave is nothing but a ghost now. My life has turned around for the better, shifting from a nightmare into a quiet, beautiful reality.
I stand in the sterile, brightly lit breakroom of a small, bustling human hospital, peeling off my blue latex gloves. The steady, rhythmic hum of human life—monitors beeping, nurses chatting, the squeak of rubber soles on linoleum—feels like a soothing melody. Utilizing my hard-earned nursing certificate and the extensive medical skills carefully honed by Uncle Silas, I secured a stable, well-paying job here. For the very first time in my existence, I am truly free. No chains. No beatings for things I did not do. No petty, unbreakable rules dictated by arrogant wolves.
I managed to rent a modest, cozy apartment just a few blocks away. It isn't much—just a living room with a faded sofa and a bedroom with a window that rattles when the wind blows—but it is mine. Every single penny I earn gets guarded. I drop my spare change into a glass jar on the kitchen counter, diligently saving to raise my unborn babies safely on my own. I might not be the richest mother, but I will give them the peace I never had.
Living stealthily among the humans has been an awakening. It has shown me a level of genuine kindness and compassion I never knew existed in the greedy, selfish, power-hungry werewolf packs. My human colleagues treat me like an equal, not a stain on the floor. A caring, handsome doctor named Elias looks out for my well-being. Just today, he caught me carrying a heavy stack of medical charts.
"Put those down, Elara," Elias had scolded gently, taking the files from my hands. "You are carrying precious cargo. Go sit down before I write you a prescription for mandatory rest."
His warmth makes me realize I made the right choice by leaving. Alpha Kaelen rejected me. He tossed our sacred bond aside because a lowly slave was not fit to stand by his side. He wouldn't want a slave bearing his powerful heirs anyway. So, I press my hand against my scrubs, feeling the slight, secret bump of my growing stomach. I am proud to give my children a safe, loving environment far away from all that historical cruelty.
My peaceful routine shatters on a chilly Friday evening. I clock out, wrapping my thick scarf around my neck to fight off the biting wind. The streetlights flicker on, casting long shadows on the pavement as I walk down the quiet, darkening street toward my home. I am heading to the local donut shop on the corner. The teenage boy working the counter always slips me a free glazed donut on Fridays, a sweet gesture that brightens my week.
I hum a soft tune under my breath, my mind drifting to the warm tea waiting for me at home. Then, the wind shifts.
The sharp, pungent, metallic scent of fresh blood hits my heightened senses. It slices through the smells of car exhaust and damp asphalt. My humming stops. The hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention. I pause, my eyes scanning the shadowy alleyways between the brick buildings.
Out of nowhere, a low, wet sound echoes from the dark alley to my right. A massive, imposing black wolf stumbles into the weak pool of streetlamp light.
My breath catches in my throat. He is huge, easily reaching my chest on all fours, his thick fur matted with dark, glistening blood. His feral, glowing golden eyes are unfocused and glazed with agony. He takes one clumsy, agonizing step into my path and collapses. His giant body hits the concrete in a heavy, lifeless heap right at my feet.
Panic grips my chest. A werewolf. Here. In the open. If a human walks down this street, they will call animal rescue. The terrifying risk of humans discovering our hidden kind, of dragging him into a sterile lab to be cut open and studied, flashes through my mind.
I watch in paralyzed shock as the beast's body begins to spasm. The sickening, wet sound of bones cracking and shifting fills the quiet street. The massive wolf shrinks, fur melting into pale skin, limbs snapping back into human proportions. Within seconds, a severely injured, naked man lies curled on the freezing pavement.
I gasp, my eyes raking over his battered form. The gruesome, sizzling black burns covering his pale skin scream of lethal wolfsbane poisoning. The toxic silver veins branch out from the open wounds on his chest and arms, eating away at his flesh. He is panting, his chest barely rising. If left untreated for even another hour, he will die a painful, agonizing death right here in the dirt.
I take a shaky step back. I swore off any werewolf affairs to protect my babies. I promised myself I would never get dragged back into their violent, unforgiving world. I should walk away. I should leave him to his fate.
But as I stare at the bloody mess of a man, Uncle Silas’s training echoes in my head. I cannot leave a member of my species to perish brutally in the dirty streets. Worse, if a passing human doctor finds him, they will run his blood and expose us all. I even briefly entertain a fleeting, shameful thought: what if I treat him, hide him, and then demand a massive cash reward from his pack? A high-ranking wolf like him would have deep pockets. That money could fund my babies' future, ensuring they never go hungry.
I sigh in frustration at my own lingering empathy. The opportunistic thought fades, replaced by the instinct to heal. I quickly pull my thick, woolen winter shawl from my large tote bag. Dropping to my knees on the freezing concrete, I lean over his bleeding, heavily muscled body. I wrap the thick fabric securely around his waist and torso, hiding his nakedness and trying to trap whatever body heat he has left.
"I need to get you out of sight," I whisper into the cold air.
I reach out and grab his broad, heavy shoulders. My boots scrape against the pavement as I try to drag his dead weight toward the shadows of the alley. As I pull, his limp head rolls back.
The flickering streetlamp illuminates his features, bringing his face into clear view.
My blood runs ice-cold in my veins. My hands go numb, and I drop his shoulders. His head hits the concrete with a dull thud, but I don't care. I scramble backward, my heart hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against my ribs.
Dark, unruly hair plastered to his forehead. A perfectly sculptured nose. Thin, aristocratic lips slightly parted as he gasps for air. Thick, dominant eyebrows casting shadows over his closed eyes. The dangerously familiar, devastating features send a tidal wave of traumatic memories crashing over my fragile psyche. The beatings. The cold glares. The brutal, soul-tearing pain of his rejection.
The wounded, dying man bleeding out right at my feet is none other than Alpha Kaelen Thorne.
The very terrifying man I swore on my life to keep my distance from is now lying helpless and vulnerable before me. I stare at the tyrant who broke me. Fate has twisted into a cruel, mocking joke, leaving me with no choice but to drag my tormentor into my safe haven and expertly treat his fatal wounds. I cannot let him die, and I cannot leave him to be discovered.
But as I look down at his unconscious, striking face, a terrifying, suffocating realization sets in. My hands instinctively move to shield my stomach. I must hide my burgeoning pregnancy from his Alpha senses no matter the cost. Because if he wakes up in my home and finds out about the twin babies growing inside me, he will not hesitate. He rejected me. He hates my bloodline. To protect his pack's pure, untainted lineage, he will kill us all.
