The Unexpected Heirs
Elara's POV: The formal rejection from Alpha Kaelen tore through the air. The harsh force of his words struck me, and my chest caved in. An invisible blade sliced through our sacred mate bond, severing it with brutal precision. I collapsed onto the cold bedroom floor, gasping for air as a jagged, visceral agony radiated through my bones. My body shook, gripped by the pain. Deep within my mind, Isolde, my wolf, let out a blood-curdling whimper. The destruction of our bond ripped her apart. I felt her thrash against the fading edges of my consciousness. Her suffering echoed in my skull until a suffocating silence slammed into me. She vanished.
I was broken, hollowed out, and wolfless. How could Kaelen, the destined mate chosen by the Goddess, be so merciless? In the blink of an eye, he had crushed all my lifelong hopes, scattering them like dead autumn leaves.
After that day, the nightmare only deepened. I remained the lowest filth in the Blood Seekers pack, a despised slave. The higher-ranking wolves took pleasure in my misery, doubling their daily torments. Without Isolde’s presence, my innate werewolf healing abilities were gone. Every slap and shove left stark purple bruises across my pale skin. The injuries lingered for weeks, mapping my degradation. Yet, my mind retreated into a thick, protective fog. I was numb to the physical blows, my spirit too shattered to care.
My single, fragile refuge lay hidden within the pack clinic. Uncle Silas, the pack doctor, possessed a rare streak of kindness that defied the pack's brutal nature. He had noticed my careful hands while tending to another slave's battered back and quietly arranged for me to shadow him. Whenever I finished my grueling daily chores—scrubbing the packhouse floors until my knuckles bled—I slipped away to his quiet sanctuary, breathing in the scent of antiseptic instead of despair.
This afternoon, the scent of rubbing alcohol mixed with the sickening perfume of Briar, the arrogant Gamma’s daughter. She sat on the examination table, swinging her legs with an air of toxic entitlement. Silas stood across the room, meticulously preparing his medical instruments.
"Elara, pass me the sterilized needles," Silas requested, his tone even and professional. "I need to stitch this up so she heals properly."
I stepped forward, reaching for the tray. Before my fingertips could brush the steel, a feral growl vibrated through the room, stopping me dead.
Briar’s lip curled, her face contorting with pure disgust as she glared down at me. "No," she sneered, her gaze sweeping over my bruised, tired arms. "I don't want this slave to touch anything with those filthy hands of hers."
I instantly yanked my hands back and locked my eyes onto the scuffed linoleum floor. The rules of this pack were carved into my very bones. In a place that despised its slaves, any form of retaliation or disobedience meant an instant, unavoidable death penalty. The superiors could execute us without a second thought.
"I am sorry," I murmured meekly, making myself as small as possible. "I will not touch them."
Briar scoffed loudly, a grating sound ensuring her superiority suffocated the space. She leaned forward, her eyes mocking me. "You better. That is, if you don't want the Alpha to give you the death penalty."
I swallowed my hatred and kept quiet, standing like a ghost while Silas handled the tray himself.
The moment Briar finally swaggered out of the clinic doors, the oppressive tension evaporated. I let out a shaky breath, slumping against the wooden counter.
Silas turned to face me. He wiped his hands on a clean towel, his brow furrowing as his gaze locked onto my face. He stepped closer, closely examining my sickly, pale complexion. "What is it, Elara? You seem a little... sick."
"I am fine. It is nothing," I murmured weakly, forcing a smile to deflect his probing eyes.
It was a lie. I had been battling constant bouts of dizziness that made the ground tilt. A ravenous hunger chewed at my insides, only to be replaced by crippling nausea that struck at the worst times. I stubbornly blamed it on the physiological aftermath of the rejection. Losing a wolf was like losing an organ. I assumed my body was just struggling to survive the severed bond.
Silas ignored my deflection. He tossed the towel aside, and a warm smile broke through his professional demeanor. His eyes crinkled at the corners. "Anyway, Elara, you have been excellent here. I submitted an application for your official nurse certification." He paused, letting the silence build. "And Alpha Kaelen allowed it."
My heart slammed against my ribs. The breath hitched in my throat. I stared at him, stunned to the core. Kaelen approved it? The same man who threw me away like trash?
But the shock quickly gave way to a massive tidal wave of pure relief washing over my weary body. That simple piece of paper, that medical certificate, was not just a title. It was the crucial key to my most desperate, deeply guarded secret plan. With it, I was going to run far away from the Blood Seekers. I could blend into the human world, get a job at a mortal hospital, and start over on my own. No pack. No Alpha. No pain. Just me.
A spark of real hope flared in my chest for the first time since the rejection.
Then, a sudden wave of intense dizziness struck me. The white walls of the clinic spun wildly into a chaotic blur. My legs turned to water, giving out instantly.
I braced for the harsh impact of the linoleum, but Silas moved with remarkably quick hands. His strong grip clamped onto my shoulders, catching me mid-fall.
"Elara!" he barked, hoisting me up. Looking deeply worried, he firmly guided me to the nearest examination bed. I sank into the mattress, panting as cold sweat beaded on my forehead.
Silas stood over me, his face etched with concern. "Are you alright? You look terrible. Are you feeling anything else besides exhaustion?"
I squeezed my eyes shut, the room still tilting slightly. Defeated, I let my head fall back against the pillow. "I... I am feeling hungry lately. An intense, gnawing hunger. And I'm vomiting. Frequently."
His brow furrowed into a deep V. He reached for his instruments, shifting from a friendly mentor to a serious physician. He grabbed my wrist, checking my vitals. His expression slowly turned strangely serious. He placed his stethoscope against my skin, listening intently to my stomach, his eyes widening a fraction as the silence stretched.
Raw panic clawed its way up my throat. My breathing quickened. Without a wolf to heal me, a sickness could be a death sentence.
"Did I get a virus or something?" I asked, mounting dread rising rapidly in my chest.
Silas hummed softly, pulling the earpieces out and stepping back. He looked at me with an unreadable expression. "Yes, you did."
My chest tightened.
"And it seems you are not going to get rid of this virus..."
A loud gasp tore from my lips. My hands flew up to cover my mouth. I sat there, stunned. My mind raced through horrific scenarios. What kind of fatal, incurable disease had I caught on top of everything else I had endured? Was this how I was going to die? I opened my mouth to voice my terror.
Before a single sound could escape my throat, Silas cut me off. A massive, brilliant smile broke out across his weathered face.
"Congratulations, Elara," he announced clearly. "You are pregnant."
