I watched the war play out across Silas's face, the way his jaw tightened and loosened, the way his eyes searched mine for something he could hold onto, something that would make this decision easier. I reached up and touched his cheek, my fingers trailing down the side of his face, and I felt the slight tremor that ran through him at my touch.

"I am sorry," I whispered. "I would not
