Dressed for Danger

Half an hour later, I was dressed in a short but not too revealing black dress, put on some makeup to blend in, and wore knee-length boots to be able to kick someone should they come near me and also to run if things took a wrong turn.

I already had the car keys with me in my purse, so I grabbed them and was jumping down the stairs, two or more at a time.
