The Breaking Point
"If you have calmed down, then we can talk properly." Gideon kept his voice level and firm, waiting for a response.
Gemma offered nothing but silence. She lay motionless under the thick quilt, her eyes closed, her breathing shallow. The catastrophic exhaustion in her bones left her unable to move a single muscle, let alone argue.
Gideon stared at her pale face for a long moment. He let out a harsh breath, stood up from the edge of the mattress, and walked back into the ruined bathroom. He fetched a broom and began sweeping up the shattered glass and broken porcelain scattered across the wet tiles.
They had fought before, but Gemma had never destroyed a room in a blind rage. She usually never even waited for him to coax her out of a bad mood. Once her initial anger faded, she always swallowed her pride and approached him first to patch things up.
He gripped the broom handle tighter, rationalizing the chaos around him. He convinced himself this was just a spoiled tantrum. She loved him too much, and he had missed their third wedding anniversary. She was just throwing a fit because she refused to accept the expensive jewelry he brought home to make amends.
After clearing the hazard from the floor, Gideon took a hot shower, changed into a fresh set of dark silk pajamas, and went downstairs to the kitchen. He poured a serving of rich broth into a ceramic bowl, heated it on the stove, and carried it back up to the master bedroom.
He placed the steaming bowl on the marble nightstand. He sat on the mattress, reached under the quilt, and pulled Gemma up by her shoulders, pressing her back firmly against his chest.
"Be good and finish the broth. Do that, and I will let go of you faking a faint and complaining to my mother." Gideon issued the command with the casual authority of a man who always got his way.
Gemma turned her head, her cheek resting against his collarbone. Her voice was an empty, hoarse whisper. "Gideon, if I died, would you still think I was faking it?"
Before the Sinclair family empire collapsed into bankruptcy, she had been a true princess. Willful, vibrant, and pampered beyond measure. But three years of a cold, unyielding marriage to Gideon Whitmore had ground that bright girl into dust.
Gideon grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him. His dark eyes were steady, devoid of any sympathy or softness.
"It seems you are still not calm enough to have a rational conversation." He spoke the words with low, controlled precision.
Gemma met his gaze. Her eyes held a deep, unfathomable exhaustion, yet she did not blink or look away.
"I cannot stay calm when I am with you."
Gideon released her chin immediately, as if her skin burned him. He stood up from the bed, smoothing the wrinkles from his silk pajamas.
"If that is how you feel, I will stay somewhere else for a few days. We can talk when you are ready to be reasonable."
He turned his back on her and strode into the massive walk-in closet. A few minutes later, he emerged wearing a sharp charcoal suit, a crisp white shirt, and a silk tie. He was dressed for the outside world, ready to leave her behind in the wreckage of their bedroom.
He paused at the foot of the bed, his hand resting on the polished wood. He stood in silence for a long moment, watching the shape of his wife huddled under the blankets. When she remained perfectly still, drained of all spirit and fight, he turned and walked out the door. He did not look back.
The heavy oak bedroom door clicked shut, leaving Gemma alone in the dark to drown in the suffocating weight of her despair.
The next morning brought no relief. Sunlight pierced through the tall bedroom windows, but Gemma remained tangled in the sheets, staring blankly at the wall.
Paige barged into the room just before ten o'clock. Seeing Gemma looking like a ghost of her former self, Paige felt a sharp pang of pity. She knew Gideon was ruthless. He controlled Paige’s monthly allowance with an iron fist, and if she dared to gossip about his marital issues, he would cut her off without a second thought. But she could not just leave her friend rotting in bed.
Paige hauled Gemma out from under the covers, forced her to eat a few bites of dry toast for breakfast, and marched her out the front door for some fresh air.
The cool morning breeze brought a tiny fraction of color back to Gemma’s cheeks. Paige steered them down the busy sidewalks, heading straight toward the Whitmore luxury mall.
"Gemma, have you said anything to Gideon about that woman yet?" Paige asked the question in a cautious whisper, glancing around to make sure no one was listening.
A fresh wave of exhaustion crashed over Gemma at the mere mention of Brooke.
"Paige, I am in a terrible state right now. I need some time to clear my head and think straight before I do anything." Gemma kept her voice flat and defeated.
If she told Paige about her plan to divorce Gideon, Paige’s legendary inability to keep a secret would ensure the entire Whitmore family knew within the hour. Her mother was still recovering in the hospital. The Sinclair family could not handle another scandal right now.
Paige picked up on the dark mood and quickly shifted gears.
"It is okay, Gemma. Forget I asked. Let us go shopping in our mall. You can pick out any designer bag or diamond necklace you want, and Gideon will cover the bill. Retail therapy always works."
Gemma offered a numb nod. She had zero interest in fashion or jewelry, but she let Paige drag her along anyway.
They reached the grand glass entrance of the Whitmore luxury mall. A thick velvet rope blocked the automatic doors. A towering security guard in a sharp uniform stepped directly into their path, holding up a gloved hand.
"I am sorry, ladies, but the mall has been privately booked for the day. It is closed to the public." The guard delivered the rehearsed line with a polite, professional smile.
Paige stopped in her tracks, her jaw dropping in disbelief.
"Who in Ashbourne would dare to book our family's top luxury mall? Do you have any idea how much money that costs for a single Tuesday?" Paige demanded answers, her voice rising in irritation.
Gemma reached out and tugged gently on Paige’s sleeve.
"Just leave it, Paige. We can walk down the street to the plaza. It is all the same to me." Gemma had only left the house to escape the suffocating memories in the master bedroom. She did not care where they walked.
Paige refused to budge. Her Whitmore pride flared hot and bright.
"Go and find out who booked the entire property. Right now." Paige snapped at the guard, crossing her arms over her chest.
The guard took a quick inventory of their designer clothes and expensive handbags, choosing his next words with extreme care.
"I apologize, ladies. We are not authorized to share the VIP guest's information."
Paige fixed the man with a lethal, icy glare.
"This mall belongs to the Whitmore Group. I am Paige Whitmore. If you continue to block my path, I will have you fired before you take your next breath."
The threat worked instantly. The guard paled, unclipped the velvet rope, and stepped back with a stiff bow. Paige grabbed Gemma by the wrist and marched her through the glass doors.
The sprawling interior of the luxury mall was unnervingly quiet. No crowds, no chatter, just the soft hum of the air conditioning and the faint sound of instrumental music playing over the speakers. Paige dragged Gemma straight toward the central glass elevator.
"Come on, Gemma. Let us go up to the third floor. They have the best limited-edition shoes up there. We are going to spend a fortune today."
The elevator glided upward in silence. The bell chimed softly. The glass doors slid open to the third floor.
Gemma stepped off the elevator and froze. Her heart slammed against her ribs and then seemed to stop beating altogether.
A few yards away, in the center of the plush VIP boutique, a woman sat on a velvet ottoman. Her head was bowed, her long, glossy hair spilling forward to obscure half of her face.
Kneeling on the floor directly in front of her was Gideon.
The ruthless, untouchable CEO of the Whitmore Group was resting his weight on one knee. He held the woman’s foot in his hands with a terrifying gentleness. His long, elegant fingers moved with careful precision as he tied the shoelaces of her new sneakers.
The scene painted a picture of pure, unfiltered domestic devotion.
Gemma clutched the fabric of her shirt right over her heart. The blood drained from her face, leaving her skin the color of ash.
She knew the only woman Gideon would ever kneel for was Brooke. When he packed his clothes last night and told her he would stay somewhere else, he had gone straight to her. He had abandoned his massive workload at the corporate headquarters, spent millions to lock down a public luxury mall, and dropped to his knees just to make sure his first love could shop in peace.
In three years of marriage, Gemma had cooked for him, ironed his suits, and waited up for him every single night. He had never done a single considerate thing for her. He had never even handed her a pair of house slippers.
The visual proof of his love for another woman paralyzed Gemma where she stood.
Paige rushed forward and threw an arm around Gemma’s waist to keep her from collapsing. The shock on Paige’s face rapidly morphed into a blinding, violent rage. She recognized the woman on the ottoman. Paige ground her teeth together, the sound loud in the quiet boutique.
Gemma panicked. She grabbed Paige’s arm and tried to pull her back toward the elevator. She could not afford a public spectacle. Her parents were frail, her family name was still recovering, and some pathetic, ingrained instinct still screamed at her to protect Gideon’s public image.
Paige shoved Gemma’s weak hands away. She had reached her absolute limit. She did not hunt down a rumor; she caught him red-handed. Gideon had no right to cut her allowance for defending her best friend.
Paige swung her heavy designer handbag through the air like a weapon.
"You bitch!" Paige screamed the insult at the top of her lungs, charging straight past the display cases toward Brooke.
Gemma lunged forward, desperate to hold Paige back, but her exhausted legs betrayed her.
Gideon reacted with terrifying speed.
Before Paige could cross the distance, Gideon surged up from the floor. He grabbed Brooke by the waist, practically throwing her behind him into an adjacent VIP fitting room. He slammed the heavy wooden door shut and twisted the brass lock.
He spun around to face the threat. He planted his broad frame directly in front of the locked door, turning himself into a human shield for his mistress.
His dark eyes locked onto Gemma. There was no guilt in his expression, no panic, no regret. There was only a cold, venomous accusation.
"Were you following me?" Gideon demanded.
Gemma’s lips trembled. The raw betrayal burning in her chest threatened to tear her apart.
"Gideon, you are supposed to be at work right now." She forced the words through a tight throat.
Yet here he was. He had booked an entire commercial property for his first love and knelt at her feet like a servant.
Gideon offered zero explanations for his presence. He kept his stance wide, guarding the fitting room door.
"Take Paige home first." He issued the cold order, treating Gemma like an irritating subordinate.
Paige could no longer contain her fury. She pointed a manicured finger right at Gideon’s chest.
"Gideon, get out of my way! Let that home-wrecker come out and face me. Right now!" Paige screamed, her whole body shaking with rage.
Gideon reached out and shoved Paige backward by the shoulder. His push was firm, aggressive, and lacked any familial warmth.
"Enough." Gideon dropped his voice into a dangerous, lethal register. He shot Paige a sharp warning glare that promised absolute destruction. "Take Gemma home now."
Paige stumbled back, tears of sheer anger spilling over her eyelashes.
"Gideon, after everything Gemma has done for you, how can you treat her like this?" Paige yelled at him, her voice cracking under the emotional strain.
Gideon’s jaw tightened into a hard line. He realized reasoning with a hysterical Paige was a waste of breath. He shifted his cold gaze back to his wife.
"Gemma, leave with Paige now. We will discuss this tonight when I get home."
Gemma stared at the stranger standing in front of her. Her vision blurred with thick, unshed tears, but she refused to let them fall.
"Since we have run into each other like this, let me meet her." Gemma kept her voice quiet, but her tone was unwavering.
Gideon shot down the request instantly.
"There is no need for that." His tone left zero room for negotiation.
Gemma held her ground. She took a step closer to the towering man she called her husband.
"And what if I insist on meeting her? What will you do then?" She looked directly into his dark, unfeeling eyes.
Gideon looked down at her. He spoke slowly, dragging each word across the quiet boutique like a serrated blade.
"Will you leave on your own? Or do I need to call security to have you escorted out? The choice is yours."
The silence that followed was suffocating. They locked eyes, a brutal standoff between a husband protecting his lover and a wife watching her world burn to ash.
Tears of pure, acidic despair finally spilled over Gemma’s bottom lashes, tracking hot paths down her pale cheeks. He would actually have security drag his own wife out of her family’s mall to protect the woman hiding behind that door.
"Fine." Gemma whispered the word with a bitter, broken smile. "I would love to see what you will do to me for your precious woman, Mr. Whitmore."
Gideon stepped into her personal space. His shadow swallowed her small frame. His voice dripped with impatience and a final, chilling warning.
"Gemma, do not make me regret ever marrying you. Walk away now, for your own sake."
The threat severed the very last shred of hope left in her heart.
Gemma stared blankly at his handsome face. She bit down hard on her lower lip, pressing her teeth into the flesh until she tasted the sharp, metallic tang of her own blood.
He must have regretted marrying her a long time ago.
She turned on her heel and ran. She fled toward the elevator, humiliated, shattered, and feeling more pathetic than she ever had in her entire life.
Gideon stood frozen in front of the door. He watched her desperate, frantic retreat. A strange, unfamiliar tightness gripped his chest again, sharper this time. He clenched his jaw and ignored it.
Paige burst into loud, angry sobs.
"Gideon, if Gemma ever really leaves you, I will throw a city-wide party to celebrate!" Paige shrieked the bitter promise at him before turning and sprinting after Gemma.
Gideon remained standing by the fitting room door. He waited in the dead silence of the boutique for over a minute, listening for the sound of the elevator descending. When he was sure the floor was empty, he reached behind him and unlocked the brass latch.
Brooke stepped out into the showroom. She looked up at him, taken aback by the grim, dark expression etched into his features.
"Gideon, why wouldn't you let me meet your wife? The more you hide this, the more she will misunderstand us." Brooke spoke softly, her eyes swimming with practiced guilt.
Gideon raised a hand and rubbed his temples wearily, trying to erase the headache building behind his eyes.
"She has a quick temper, and Paige is even more impulsive." Gideon dropped his hand and looked at Brooke, his harsh edges softening slightly. "I was worried they might do something that would hurt you."
