POV Hazel
Two days and twelve agonizing hours.
That is precisely how long it has been since I recklessly surrendered my body to a nameless stranger in a luxury hotel. It was a devastatingly hot mistake, one I am desperately trying to shove down into the darkest, most locked-away recesses of my mind. The faint, lingering soreness between my thighs serves as a constant, mocking reminder of the raw, anonymous sex that left me breathless and alone in tangled sheets.
Today is about survival and ambition. I stand frozen on the pavement, craning my neck to take in the towering, intimidating glass-and-steel exterior of Vertex Corporation. The colossal structure pierces the morning sky, casting a massive, heavy shadow over the bustling Vegas strip. The sheer height of the glass panels makes me dizzy, stretching up into the clouds like a monument to modern greed. Traffic blares loudly behind me. Tourists chatter in loud bursts on the sidewalk, and the digital glow of giant LED screens loops endless corporate advertisements above the street. But all I can focus on is the imposing, gleaming entrance of the building.
I clutch my cheap leather presentation folder to my chest like a physical shield against my own anxiety. My knuckles turn white around the edges of the worn material. I force myself to inhale a deep, shaky breath, letting the cool morning air fill my lungs.
This is my very first day as a junior intern at the biggest enterprise in Las Vegas. It is the culmination of years of scraping by, of pulling late nights over glowing laptop screens, and eating cheap noodles just to pay for my business degree. It is the one thing in my life I cannot afford to screw up. Every sacrifice I made led me to these towering glass doors.
I push through the heavy revolving doors and step into the breathtaking, aggressively cold world of Vertex. The transition from the chaotic street to the sterile corporate environment is jarring. The lobby is a sprawling cavern of imported white marble that gleams flawlessly under recessed lighting. The scent of the space is a mixture of subtle citrus air freshener and cold, hard cash. The massive room echoes with the sharp, rhythmic clicks of expensive footwear hitting the polished stone floor. Hushed, urgent murmurs pass between fast-moving executives in tailored suits. No one wastes a single second here, and no one spares a glance at a nervous girl holding a cheap folder.
A sleek, strictly professional woman with a headset steps directly into my path. Her dark hair is pulled back into a severe, flawless bun. She verifies my credentials with a quick, clinical glance at her tablet.
"I am Tessa. Follow me." She issues the command in a crisp tone and turns on her heel without waiting for my response.
I scramble to keep pace with her brisk strides. She escorts me into a lightning-fast elevator that rockets us upward. The machine hums with a low, barely perceptible vibration, a testament to the cutting-edge engineering of the building. My stomach drops into my shoes as the floor numbers blur past on the digital display. We halt abruptly on Floor 39. The metal doors slide open to reveal an expansive, intimidating workspace bathed in harsh, clinical light. The illumination reflects off pristine chrome desks, oversized touchscreen monitors, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling city below. The sheer scale of the operation makes my breath catch in my throat.
Tessa leads me straight through the maze of cubicles to a sharply dressed man who exudes middle-management authority. He wears a navy suit and holds a sleek tablet tucked under one arm, tapping away at the screen until we approach.
"I am Arthur Hayes. Welcome aboard. We are thrilled to have you." He greets me with a practiced, sterile business smile, extending his hand.
"Thank you. I am ready to get to work." I reply, keeping my voice steady as I accept his firm handshake.
He nods in approval and gestures toward the bustling team bullpen in the center of the room. This is where I am supposed to shadow my new colleagues in the Tactics department. Analysts and strategists are huddled in small groups, debating market trends and asset forecasts in rapid-fire corporate jargon. The energy is intense, fast-paced, and wildly intimidating.
I clear my throat, awkwardly adjusting the hem of my pencil skirt. I take another deep breath, nervously preparing to introduce myself to the sea of staring faces that are starting to turn my way.
The heavy glass doors to the department burst open with sudden, terrifying force.
A senior executive strides into the room with a frantic urgency. The sheer panic rolling off him instantly silences the entire floor. Telephones seem to stop ringing. The analysts freeze mid-sentence. People stop breathing. I catch a glimpse of the silver badge pinned to his lapel, identifying him as Mr. Hughes.
"Hayes. Sorry to interrupt." Hughes barks, his face flushed red and unsmiling.
Arthur stiffens, lowering his tablet to his side.
"The CEO just dismissed his secretary. Again. We need a temporary replacement right now. Someone sharp, quick, discreet." Hughes snaps out the words like rapid gunfire, scanning the room with desperate eyes.
Arthur blinks, utterly blindsided by the demand. For a fraction of a second, his panicked eyes flick over to me. I am standing near his desk, the only unassigned body in the room.
Hughes possesses the predatory instincts of a corporate shark. He catches the look and physically pivots, squaring his shoulders toward me. His dark eyes assess me from head to toe in a single, terrifying instant, taking in my cheap suit and wide-eyed expression.
"You are the new intern." Hughes states, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"Yes, sir." I reply, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Good. You are promoted. For the week. Come with me. He is waiting."
Before my brain can even process the monumental shock of the command, I am being physically ushered away from the bullpen. My stomach tightens into painful knots, churning with raw dread. As I follow Hughes out of the department, I catch the horrified murmurs of my almost-colleagues trailing behind me in the dead silence.
"The new CEO has only been at the helm for a single month and he already sacked three trained secretaries."
"She is walking straight into a slaughterhouse."
I silently, viciously curse myself for skipping my detailed research on the company's recent C-suite leadership changes over the weekend. I wanted to surprise myself on my first day, to focus only on my specific department. Now, I am walking straight to my own execution.
Hughes escorts me to a private, hyper-secure elevator at the end of a restricted corridor. He swipes a black keycard over the glowing scanner. The metal doors slide shut, shooting us up to the highest top floor—the executive penthouse level. The ride is suffocatingly silent. The air pressure pops in my ears, mirroring the rising tension in my chest.
The elevator stops with a soft chime. We step out into a quiet, opulent hallway lined with dark wood and modern art. The carpet beneath my modest heels is incredibly thick, swallowing the sound of our footsteps. Every surface in this corridor gleams with wealth and unyielding power.
Hughes marches me down the hallway and leaves me standing alone outside a set of massive, black-tinted double doors.
"Good luck, and please do not get fired early." Hughes half-pleads. He wipes a bead of sweat from his temple, offering a grimace that passes for an encouraging smile, before abandoning me to my fate.
He retreats down the hallway, his footsteps fading away, leaving me stranded in the heavy silence.
My hands are shaking so badly I can barely grip my leather folder. My palms are slick with nervous sweat. I reach out, grab the cold steel handles, and pull the heavy doors open. I step inside, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
The office is sprawling, easily larger than my entire apartment. It is bathed in the golden light of the morning sun piercing through the massive glass walls. The distinct, expensive scent of fresh espresso and sharp masculine cologne hangs in the air.
At the far end of the room, standing with his back to me, is the CEO.
His dark suit jacket is discarded on a nearby leather chair. The sleeves of his crisp white dress shirt are rolled up to the elbows. He is staring out the massive window at the sprawling Vegas skyline below, looking out over the city like he owns the entire horizon.
The moment my eyes lock onto him, my blood turns to solid ice.
I know that back. I know the exact, muscular slope of those broad shoulders stretching the expensive fabric of his shirt. I know the corded, veiny tension in those strong forearms resting against the cold glass. My mind flashes vividly back to the dark hotel room, to those exact same hands tangling in my hair and pinning my wrists to the mattress.
He slowly turns around.
My knees threaten to buckle. I forget how to breathe, let alone stand. My fingers tighten around my folder until my nails bite painfully into the leather.
Slate-gray eyes, sharp and unforgiving, stare back at me like metal buried under a layer of ice. A twitchy, tense jawline flexes beneath his smooth skin.
It is him.
It is the exact same man from the hotel bar. The man who ruthlessly pressed my naked body into a mattress two nights ago. The man who ravaged me in the dark without giving a name. The stranger who gripped my hips and touched me like I was the only thing in the entire world keeping him alive.
Neither of us says a single word. The silence in the cavernous office hangs between us like cracking glass, heavy and suffocating.
I stand frozen on the thick carpet, unable to look away. I can see the muscle in his jaw tense and flex, a subtle ripple of movement beneath his skin.
But his eyes are dead.
He looks at me with a blank, chilling indifference. He stares at my face as if he does not know me at all. There is no spark of recognition, no lingering heat from the wild night we shared. Just the cold, sterile gaze of a ruthless executive evaluating a new subordinate who just walked into his territory.
My trembling eyes drop from his handsome, stony face. I look past his broad chest to the heavy, gleaming golden nameplate sitting perfectly centered on his immaculate mahogany desk.
*Dorian Blackwood*.
The impossible, horrifying reality crashes down on my shoulders. The air leaves my lungs, suffocating me, leaving me fundamentally cooked. I stare at the golden letters, the polished metal reflecting the morning sunlight right into my eyes. My mind spins in a vortex of shock, panic, and overwhelming dread.
I slept with my billionaire boss.
