The First Sign

The door swung open so hard it slammed against the wall as two nurses and the doctor rushed inside. I stumbled backward to give them space, but my eyes never left Aria. They couldn’t. I was terrified that if I looked away for even a second, whatever miracle I’d just seen would disappear.

“What happened?” the doctor asked quickly as he reached her bedside.

“She moved.”

“Her fingers moved. She
