A Painful Journey

Valeria’s POV

"What did I do to you?" I scream, the raw sound tearing from my throat and echoing across the desolate driveway. I stare at my father's Beta, desperately searching those familiar eyes for a single flicker of humanity, for some shred of hesitation.

Boris’s face remains a stone-cold mask. He does not even blink. With mechanical indifference, he reaches out, accepting a heavy metal briefcase from the bearded stranger. The exchange is seamless. Boris secures his blood money, turns his broad back to me, and walks away into the shadows, cementing his ultimate betrayal.

I grind my teeth together, ignoring the sharp sting of my busted lip. I make a silent, burning vow right then. If I survive this night, I will hunt him down. I will make him feel the crushing weight of every jagged piece of this treachery.

The bearded man gestures. Two other strangers emerge from the darkness of the idling truck. They grab my arms, their hard fingers digging deep into my bruised flesh, and shove me toward the back of the vehicle. I hit the ribbed metal floor hard. The silver cuffs locking my wrists and ankles bite deep into my skin. The unyielding metal sears my flesh, a relentless scorch that drains away any fleeting thought of escape. I am trapped, pinned down by callous hands.

The engine roars to life. The men lock the rear doors, plunging me into suffocating darkness, and the truck lurches forward onto the uneven road.

The drive drags on, an agonizing march into the unknown. Every mile pushes us further into freezing air. I have no coat, no proper clothes to shield my battered body from the plummeting temperature. Worse, I have no wolf. Without a wolf to run hot blood through my veins, the chill slices straight to my bones. I tremble uncontrollably. My teeth chatter so hard my jaw aches. Each shiver stretches the bruised, raw cuts across my skin, sparking fresh waves of agonizing pain.

One of the men shifts in the dark. He grunts, tossing a massive, heavy shape at me. It lands over my shaking shoulders. A filthy, tattered blanket stinking of stale sweat and dirt. I clutch the rough fabric in my numb fingers, pulling it tight across my chest, praying the grime will not infect my open wounds.

Hours blur into a grueling stretch of freezing torment before the truck finally grinds to a halt. The back doors swing open, flooding the space with harsh, blinding light. We are parked at a deserted gas station.

Rough hands grab my shoulders. They yank me out of the truck bed, throwing me straight onto the freezing concrete. The hard impact knocks the wind from my lungs.

The bearded man steps over me. He holds a clear glass bottle. Vodka. He unscrews the cap, tips it forward, and pours the stinging liquid directly over my open gashes.

Searing, blinding agony explodes through my nervous system. It feels like liquid fire gnawing right into my flesh. I bite down on my lower lip, tasting my own warm blood. I lock my jaw, refusing to make a single sound. I will not give him the sick satisfaction of hearing me scream.

He stops pouring and crouches down, his face inches from mine. A cruel sneer twists his lips, exposing a row of rotting, yellowed teeth.

"I can't take damaged goods to my Alphas," he sneers, his breath reeking of cheap alcohol and tobacco.

I turn my head away, locking my reactions behind a blank stare. The other men watch in dead silence, their faces devoid of emotion, treating my torture like a mundane chore. They drag me back to my feet and shove me into the truck bed once more, wrapping the foul blanket back over my shivering frame.

The metal doors slam shut. We plunge back into motion, driving deeper into an unknown nightmare.

I stare into the pitch black. I refuse to cry. Tears will only freeze on my cheeks and expose my terror. Outwardly, I maintain a hollow shell, masking my fear, but internally, I am crumbling. With every passing mile, a piece of my soul shatters. I had been foolish. I thought my father's death would finally bring me freedom. I thought I would escape his suffocating shadow. Instead, his death handed me a colder, harsher sentence.

The temperature drops steadily, turning the air sharp and biting. My lungs ache with every shallow breath. I realize where we are heading. Boreal. The frozen territory up north. I have never seen Boreal, never walked its icy forests, only heard terrified whispers about its brutal wilderness.

Now I am heading straight into its heart. Half-naked, barefoot, and starved. The silver cuffs burn into my skin like a slow, toxic poison, leaving blistered rings around my joints.

Exhaustion drags at my mind, but the biting cold and gnawing hunger keep me awake. Fear claws at my chest, suffocating me with the heavy dread of what awaits at the end of this road.

Finally, the truck lurches and slams to a jarring halt.

The metal doors swing open. A man barks an order, demanding I get out.

My legs are numb. Shaking hard, I stumble forward, dragging myself out of the truck bed. My bare toes hit the ground, and a shocking, intense sting registers instantly.

Snow.

I am standing in deep, untouched snow.

The bitter wind slices right through the filthy blanket, sharper than any blade. I look around. The world is bathed in the eerie, pale glow of a full moon. It illuminates endless rows of skeletal trees, their bare branches twisting like jagged bones against the black night sky.

Without warning, someone yanks harshly at the iron chains linking my wrists.

I plummet forward. My bare knees smash into the solid ice hidden beneath the snow. The skin scrapes and tears agonizingly. I look up from the frozen ground, my chest heaving. I swallow hard, the sharp, raw tang of fear coating the back of my mouth.
