Ruthless And Unforgiving
Elsie pushed open the heavy mahogany door to Serena's private resting room in the elite Summit Hospital. She carried a large, customized takeout bag, the rich aroma of roasted meats and spices preceding her. Serena was already awake, sitting on the edge of the leather sofa. Despite the grueling ten-hour surgery, she looked remarkably composed.
"You put in a punishing shift, so I brought reinforcements," Elsie announced, setting the bag onto the glass table.
Serena caught the scent and glanced at the elegant, foil-stamped logo on the packaging. "Salt & Smoke?"
Elsie flashed a bright smile, pulling out the containers. "You bet. I had their head chef prepare this custom meal specifically for you. Consider it a reward." Getting a custom order from Kingsport's most prestigious restaurant required serious leverage, but Elsie considered it a small price to pay.
She dropped into the opposite armchair with a dramatic, heavy sigh, kicking off her heels. "But honestly, Serena, look at you. You are working yourself to the bone. Is going to such extreme, exhausting lengths for a crippled man truly worth all this trouble?"
Serena did not hesitate for a microsecond. She met Elsie’s gaze squarely. "A life is still a life," she stated firmly. "It is worth it."
She kept the fact that Magnus had assigned this task to herself. The quiet meal had barely begun when Serena’s phone buzzed aggressively against the glass table. The screen flashed with Wyatt Langdon’s name. She swiped to answer.
"Boss, I am stuck outside these guarded gates!" Wyatt’s loud complaints blasted through the speaker. "Getting into Summit Hospital is like trying to breach a military vault. The security here is insane, and they refuse to let me through."
Serena pulled the phone away from her ear and looked at Elsie. "A friend of mine is stuck at the main gate."
Elsie waved a hand, already pulling out her own phone. "I will clear his entry right now. Give me a second."
A short time later, Wyatt strode into the private resting room. He looked around, his eyes wide as he took in the opulent surroundings of the Dalton-owned facility. He turned his attention to Serena, intense curiosity burning in his eyes.
"What exactly are you doing at Summit Hospital?" Wyatt probed, taking a step closer. "This place is restricted to the top tier of society. Who could possibly warrant your personal medical intervention?"
Serena’s expression hardened instantly. She fixed him with a cold, terrifying stare that froze him in his tracks. "Stop asking dangerous questions, Wyatt. Handle your own work and stay out of things that do not concern you."
Wyatt swallowed hard, the chill in her voice leaving no room for argument. "Understood. Just checking in."
Shortly after, Wyatt exited the hospital's towering glass doors, eager to put distance between himself and Serena's freezing glare. He navigated the sprawling courtyard, heading for the exit. He had barely reached the perimeter when a desperate voice called out.
"Mr. Langdon! Thank goodness I finally found you!"
Wyatt stopped, his jaw clenching. Tiberius Vance was rushing toward him, practically tripping over his own feet to close the distance. He had abandoned all his usual high-society arrogance, replacing it with a frantic, groveling demeanor. Darius Vance followed closely behind his father, looking deeply uncomfortable but equally desperate.
Tiberius had been trying to track Wyatt down for days. The massive contracts between the Vance Group and the Atlantis Group were crumbling, threatening to take the Vance family fortune down with them.
"Mr. Langdon, there has to be a misunderstanding," Tiberius pleaded, plastering a desperate smile on his face. "The Vance Group and Atlantis have been close partners for years. You cannot just sever our ties like this. It will destroy us!"
Wyatt did not grant the older man a second glance. A sneer of pure contempt twisted his lips. "Mr. Vance, my team made our position clear. I have no idea why you are still pestering me."
Tiberius broke into a cold sweat, his hands shaking. "Sir, please, give us a chance to fix whatever went wrong..."
"Atlantis is not here to clean up your messes," Wyatt cut him off, his voice loud and ruthless. "Do you even realize the massive financial losses we have suffered because of your sheer incompetence? We have wanted to drop you for years." Wyatt paused, his eyes narrowing as he delivered the final blow. "From this point forward, the Atlantis Group and the Vance Group are official enemies. Do not bother crawling back to us."
Darius stepped forward, his face flushed red with fury. He could no longer stand watching his father humiliate himself. "Mr. Langdon, if you are turning on us, at least give us a real reason! What did we do to deserve this treatment?"
Wyatt brushed Darius off like a piece of dirt on his jacket. "My only mistake was associating with trash like you in the first place. Get out of my sight."
He stalked away, leaving the two men standing on the pavement in stunned silence. Darius clenched his fists, his breathing heavy. He was ready to lunge forward and cause a public scene, but Tiberius grabbed his son's arm, physically restraining him.
"Stop!" Tiberius hissed, his grip tight enough to bruise. "If you make a scene right now, we are finished."
"Dad, did you hear what he called us?" Darius seethed, pulling against his father's hold. "He used to beg for our meetings, and now he treats us like garbage!"
As the Vances stood lamenting their abrupt and humiliating downfall, the automatic doors of the hospital slid open. Serena walked out into the cool morning air, her posture straight and commanding.
Darius spotted her instantly. His eyes lit up with malicious glee, happy to have a target for his boiling anger. "Serena? What the hell are you doing here?"
Serena stopped, her gaze sweeping over them with detached indifference.
Darius sneered, stepping directly into her path. "Is your pathetic new life so terrible that you are stalking us? Trying to crawl back into a wealthy family because you cannot survive on your own? Pathetic."
Serena’s tone was calm, yet razor-sharp as it cut through the air. "Do not flatter yourself."
She moved to walk past him, but Darius aggressively blocked her way again. "Show some respect!" he screamed, his voice echoing loudly in the courtyard. "Our family fed you! We housed you! Is this how you repay us? I was your brother!"
The temperature around Serena seemed to drop below freezing. Her eyes locked onto his. "Brother?" she repeated, her voice laced with venom. "Are you truly worthy of being called a brother?"
Darius choked on his words, his face contorting in rage, but Tiberius quickly stepped between them to diffuse the escalating tension. The older man's tone was devoid of emotion, dismissive as he looked at the girl he had once called a daughter.
"Do not waste your breath on her, Darius," Tiberius stated coldly. "Bianca is our only true daughter now. Serena, whether you live or die means nothing to us."
A dark, mocking laugh slipped past Serena’s lips. She looked from Tiberius to Darius, her eyes glinting with a dangerous promise. "Remember those exact words."
Without another glance, she turned and walked away, her footsteps echoing against the pavement.
Tiberius frowned, watching her retreating figure until she disappeared around the corner. "How did a country girl manage to walk out of an elite, Dalton-owned hospital?" he muttered, a flicker of genuine doubt crossing his mind. "Ordinary people cannot just walk in there."
Darius scoffed, rubbing his jaw. "She is a nobody, Dad. She is incapable of having real connections. She probably snuck in to use the bathroom or got lost. Do not give her too much credit."
Meanwhile, miles away at the opulent Vance Mansion, the threat of financial ruin was the furthest thing from Bianca’s mind.
She sat right in the center of her massive, plush bedroom rug. All around her sat glittering piles of gold and silver jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets, diamond earrings, and heavy chains were spread out like a dragon's hoard. She clutched a thick diamond-encrusted bracelet to her chest like a lifeline. The deep-seated terror of returning to poverty, of going back to the modest, cramped home of the Montell family, haunted her every waking moment. This wealth was her only armor against the gnawing insecurity that threatened to consume her.
Carefully placing the bracelet back into its velvet box, Bianca picked up her smartphone and turned to her daily ritual.
She adjusted her lighting ring, making sure the glow hit her face perfectly. She cranked the beauty filters up to the maximum setting, blurring away any imperfections, and began snapping heavily filtered selfies. She posed with exaggerated pouts, winking and flashing peace signs while making sure the glittering piles of jewelry were visible in the background.
After meticulously selecting the best photos, she began crafting her Instagram captions, masking her deep insecurity with vain humble-bragging.
She typed out the first post, staring at the screen: *Omg, so like, I told my parents that one car was enough, right? But no, they had to get me FIVE luxury cars. Ugh, it is such a struggle being this spoiled. #CarGoals #TooBlessedToStress*
She quickly moved to the second post, attaching a photo of her dripping in diamonds: *So my brothers were like, 'You NEED this jewelry,' and I am like, 'Guys, chill, I do not need more stuff.' But they insisted, 'You are our only sister, we HAVE to spoil you.' Fine, I guess I will take it. #SisterPrivilege #AllTheSparkle*
She paused, tapping her manicured nail against her chin. She needed one more push to solidify her image. She added a final, faux complaint to top it all off: *I literally do not know what to do with all this excess money. Should I buy another Birkin bag or just donate it? #RichGirlProblems #HelpMeDecide*
