Lost to a Woman
Harsh floodlights pierced the night at the Apex Circuit, casting sharp, elongated shadows over the restless crowd gathered near the starting line. The clock struck eight. The cool night air hummed with thick adrenaline, fueled by the bitter, long-standing rivalry between the event organizers, Finley and Jace. Everyone knew the stakes tonight were massive.
Sitting near the entrance of the VIP clubhouse, Dominic Vane checked his expensive silver watch. He wore casual clothes, yet his elegant, aloof demeanor made him look out of place among Finley’s rowdy, leather-clad friends. He frowned, his deep voice cutting through the thumping background music. "Where is he?"
Finley hovered beside his eldest brother, offering an obsequious, eager grin. "He should be here any second, Dominic." Inwardly, Finley rejoiced. Coaxing the notorious workaholic Dominic out to the dangerous track had been a major victory. With Dominic behind the wheel, Jace was going to suffer a crushing, humiliating defeat.
A deafening engine roar shattered the chatter. Jace's custom sports car tore into the lot, tires screeching as it stopped near the clubhouse. Jace stepped out of the driver's seat with a cocky swagger. A beat later, the passenger door swung open.
A woman emerged. Dressed in simple gray casual wear, her wavy, long hair tumbled loosely down her back. The harsh track lights caught her flawless, luminous skin and mesmerizing almond eyes. Every man in the vicinity turned to stare, captivated by her striking beauty.
Finley blinked, distracted for a moment, before his innate arrogance surged back to the surface. "Where is the expert racer you promised, Jace?" he demanded, jutting his chin toward his older brother. "I brought Dominic tonight. Just wait until you lose, you brat."
Jace chuckled. He reached out and casually patted the stunning woman’s shoulder. "I would not be so sure of a loss. This delicate-looking lady here is my boss, and she is the one who will be racing against Dominic tonight."
A heavy silence fell over the gathered crowd, followed immediately by an explosion of mocking whispers. Finley stared at her in stunned disbelief. "Her? Your boss? Are you kidding me, Jace? How dare you look down on us!"
The Apex Circuit possessed a notoriously deadly reputation. Its treacherous mountain curves demanded pure precision; the slightest miscalculation meant plunging off a jagged cliff. Pitting a fragile-looking young woman against a seasoned racing veteran like Dominic seemed ridiculous, bordering on suicidal.
Evangeline ignored the insulting murmurs and the mocking stares. Her calm gaze shifted from the sputtering Finley to the imposing figure of Dominic. She leaned forward, lowering her voice to a confident purr. "Let's start the race."
She pulled a rubber band from her wrist, swiftly tying her long hair back, then scooped up a heavy racing helmet from the nearby table. She paused, noticing Dominic remained rooted to his spot. A challenging, mocking smile curved her lips. "What is wrong? Are you looking down on me, Mr. Dominic?"
Dominic met her gaze, annoyed. He had no desire to race a little girl. The outcome felt predetermined, and stepping onto the track against her felt like bullying.
Finley anxiously tugged at his brother's sleeve. "I did not expect him to bring a girl," he whispered. "Just go easy on the gorgeous lady and get it over with, Dominic."
Frowning in deep hesitation, Dominic weighed his options. He finally snatched his helmet off the table, resolving to end this farce quickly.
They walked toward their respective high-powered sports cars. The rules were brutally simple: navigate the twisting eight-kilometer mountain circuit. The first driver to cross back over the starting line won.
Engines revved, vibrating through the asphalt and rattling the chests of the onlookers. The flag dropped. The two cars roared off the starting line side-by-side, vanishing over the first steep hillside in a matter of seconds.
Inside his cabin, Dominic’s casual demeanor vanished. He hit the first treacherous curve, expecting to leave her in the dust. Instead, the bright blue BMW beside him executed a flawless, gravity-defying drift around the hairpin turn, her tires screaming against the asphalt as she held the inside line.
Dominic gripped his steering wheel tighter, his mind racing as fast as his roaring engine. A sudden shock of adrenaline flooded his system. He had severely underestimated her. This lady was risking her life for the race, pushing the vehicle to its mechanical limits without a shred of fear. A serious, thrilled smile curved his lips in the dark cabin. He silently admitted he had finally met his match.
Exactly ten minutes later, blinding headlights pierced the darkness near the final stretch. The bright blue BMW drifted stylishly around the last bend, tearing across the finish line. The tires squealed, sending a thick plume of white smoke into the air before the car came to a precise, smoking halt.
The crowd stood in stunned silence. Evangeline had won.
Jace shattered the quiet, jumping into the air and cheering wildly. "You are unbelievable, Boss!"
His crew erupted behind him, echoing his explosive excitement over their monumental victory. They clapped each other on the back, screaming praises.
It took almost half a full minute before the roar of a second engine announced Dominic’s arrival. His sleek car tore across the line and rolled to a stop behind the BMW. Finley stared at the track, his jaw slack, his eyes unblinking in pure shock. His invincible brother had lost.
The driver's side door of the blue BMW swung open. Evangeline stepped gracefully out onto the asphalt. She pulled off her heavy helmet, shaking out her dark, wavy hair, and turned to face the second car.
Dominic climbed out of his vehicle, his expression dark.
Evangeline smiled directly at him, letting the undeniable thrill of beating the arrogant Dominic wash over her. "You have lost," she declared, her clear voice carrying over the murmurs of the crowd.
Dominic stepped closer, his jaw tight. He looked deeply displeased by suffering the very first racing defeat of his life—especially to a woman he had underestimated. He shot her a sharp, assessing glance, his dark eyes cataloging her relaxed posture and confident smirk. His pride stung, demanding retribution.
"Let's have another race," he demanded.
