The Hollow Vows

"What is wrong, darling? You look troubled." Vittoria let her voice drip with a sickening false sweetness. She stepped up behind Dante, delicately placing a hand on his tense shoulder. Her manicured nails dug just slightly through the fabric of his tailored suit, a soothing gesture that masked a calculated intent.

Dante stood by the heavy oak desk in his home office, staring out the window at the sprawling Gallo estate. He held a glass of amber whiskey, the ice clinking softly against the crystal as his hand gave a slight tremor. He had been quiet all evening. Vittoria noticed the lingering gloom shadowing his features. She knew exactly what was eating at him. It was the crushing reality of forcing his own daughter, Camila, into a marriage she never wanted, chaining her to a man like Lorenzo Falcone.

Vittoria felt a sharp spike of anxiety, but she kept her face perfectly composed. She was terrified that Dante might experience a rare, sudden attack of conscience. If he backed out of this immensely lucrative business deal now, years of her careful manipulation would go up in smoke. She needed to step in, quickly and aggressively, to secure her malicious master plan.

She leaned in close, pressing her chest against his back, and let out a soft, understanding sigh. "Are you worrying about Camila again? My love, you are too good to her. You are thinking too much. We are doing this for her future."

Dante took a slow sip of his whiskey. "I was thinking about the contract. I hope it proves to be a good decision for her. But I have my doubts. She is not willing to marry Stefano Falcone’s son. Lorenzo is... he is not a gentle man." His eyes were gloomy, burdened by a sudden, heavy pity for his flesh and blood.

Vittoria moved around to face him, her eyes wide with feigned innocence. "Darling, who else would marry her? You know how society talks. You know the kind of reputation she carries, the same reputation her mother had."

She watched his face carefully, letting the poison sink in. Vittoria herself had meticulously and maliciously spread those vicious, scandalous rumors years ago. She had whispered in the ears of the elite, painting Livia as a shameless woman, and then she had seamlessly transferred that filth onto Camila. She had done it to destroy Livia’s standing, and she continued it to make Camila’s existence a living, inescapable hell. If it were up to Vittoria, she would have buried Camila right next to her mother. Handing her over to a notorious, heartless player like Lorenzo Falcone—a man incapable of loyalty, a man with no mercy—was the ultimate victory.

Dante released a heavy, weary sigh. He reached up, pulling Vittoria’s hand from his shoulder, and held it affectionately. The last frail shreds of his guilt dissolved under the weight of her words.

"I never truly loved Livia," Dante murmured, his voice dull and defeated. "And I do not even love Camila. I never have. But she is my blood, and I feel unwillingly bound by that unfortunate reality. I feel responsible for her. I know you took wonderful care of her after Livia died, but we cannot change the dirty blood running in her veins. If you had not disciplined her, she would have turned out exactly like her mother, chasing after other men."

Vittoria smiled inwardly, a dark, triumphant smirk that she kept hidden behind a mask of maternal sorrow. He believed every single lie. He believed Livia was a slut because Vittoria had orchestrated the illusion.

"I just hope this marriage will make her responsible," Dante muttered, trying to justify his cruelty. "I hope she learns to behave and remains loyal to Lorenzo."

"We can only hope," Vittoria sighed dramatically, reaching up to stroke his cheek. "But do not worry about her future, Dante. I will personally ensure we add an ironclad alimony clause to the paperwork. That way, when this three-year marriage contract is inevitably and disgracefully annulled, she will walk away with plenty of money."

Dante’s eyes softened, shining with a pathetic, blind infatuation. "Thank you, Vittoria. You are such a nice lady. You have a golden heart. I am so lucky to have you in my life."

He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her cheek, blindly oblivious to the dark, venomous intentions slithering just beneath her beautiful facade.

"I would do anything for you, my darling," she purred.

Later that evening, the scene shifted to an opulent, grand hall. Dante had spared no expense for the spectacle. Thousands of cascading fairy lights hung from the towering ceilings, casting a dreamlike, golden glow over the massive ballroom. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above rows of plush white chairs, and exquisite floral arrangements filled the air with a heavy, sweet perfume.

The media was out in full force, their cameras flashing like lightning storms. They were here to capture every angle of the Gallo family's supposed triumph, broadcasting the union of two incredibly powerful mafia syndicates.

Hidden far away from the music and the flashing lights, in the suffocating quiet of the bridal chamber, Camila stood frozen. She wore a heavy, intricate white gown. The layers of silk and lace felt like a suffocating cage, the tight corset making it nearly impossible to draw a full breath. She was trembling uncontrollably, the fabric rustling slightly with her shudders.

She stared at her pale reflection in the full-length mirror. Her dark hair was pinned up, her lips painted a soft rose, but her eyes were wide and filled with raw, unadulterated terror. She had never met Lorenzo Falcone, but she knew exactly who he was. Everyone did. He was notorious across the country—a ruthless, heartless billionaire playboy. He broke people for sport.

Panic clawed at her throat. She desperately wanted to hitch up the heavy skirts, tear off the sheer veil, and flee into the night. She wanted to run until her lungs burned and she was miles away from this nightmare.

Yet, she remained rooted to the spot. She acutely knew this wedding was a vital, linchpin business deal. Her father demanded it. If she ran, she would publicly doom her family in front of the gathered elite and the flashing cameras. She could not bring herself to face the wrath that would inevitably follow. She was trapped.

The heavy door swung open, shattering the quiet. Vittoria walked in. The fake, sweet smile she wore for Dante was gone, replaced by a sharp, cold sneer.

"It is time," Vittoria snapped. She marched across the room and grabbed Camila's arm. Her grip was painfully tight, her sharp nails digging into Camila’s soft skin through the sheer lace sleeves. "Do not embarrass us."

Camila swallowed the lump in her throat and let herself be dragged out of the chamber.

As they reached the entrance to the grand hall, Vittoria let go. The heavy double doors swung open, and they emerged into the blinding lights. The sudden onslaught of camera flashes made Camila blink back tears. The melodic, soaring notes of a string quartet filled the air.

Dante stood waiting for her at the start of the aisle. As Camila approached, he greeted her with a wide, incredibly warm smile. It was a look of pure, fatherly pride. For a fleeting, foolish second, that gentle smile brought a desperate spark of joy to Camila's starved heart. She thought, just maybe, he was proud of her.

Then the crushing reality set in.

She reached his side and took his offered arm, hooking her hand around his elbow. The moment she was close enough, he instantly shattered any remaining illusion. He kept the warm smile plastered on his face for the cameras, but he leaned in, his lips brushing her ear.

"Camila," Dante whispered harshly through gritted teeth, his tone dripping with venom. "I expect you to behave properly in front of these people. Do not forget I need you to stay in this marriage for three years. So be nice to Lorenzo, and do not enrage him."

The whispered threat acted like ice water poured straight down her spine. Numb to her very core with fear, Camila nodded stiffly. She kept her eyes glued firmly to the toes of her white satin shoes as they slowly began to walk.

The aisle felt painfully long. The murmurs of the elite guests, the blinding flashes of the cameras, the sweet, cloying scent of the floral arrangements—it all blurred together into a dizzying nightmare. She prayed silently that she would not trip, that she would not do anything stupid to humiliate her cruel father.

When Dante finally halted, she realized they had reached the grand altar.

She did not dare to look up. She stared down at the polished marble floor. Suddenly, a large, masculine hand stretched out into her downward line of sight. It was a strong hand, the sleeves of a dark, immaculately tailored suit resting at the wrist.

She hesitated. Her breath caught in her throat. The music seemed to fade away, replaced by the deafening thud of her own heartbeat. Trembling, she finally raised her shaking hand and placed it into his.

His skin was warm, his grip incredibly firm. As he pulled her up onto the stage, she stumbled slightly over the heavy hem of her dress. His hand tightened on hers, steadying her effortlessly.

Camila lifted her head slightly, peering through the sheer fabric of her veil.

For the first time, she met Lorenzo Falcone.

He had a stunningly handsome, sharply chiseled face, with a strong jawline and thick, dark hair. But it was his eyes that stole the breath from her lungs. They were an incredibly cold, unreadable grey. A stormy, desolate grey devoid of any warmth or mercy. He stared down at her face, trying to pierce through the sheer veil, and the sheer intensity of his gaze made her stomach drop.

She instantly stepped back in instinctual fear, pulling her hand away from his grip as she took her place beside him at the altar. Lorenzo’s expression did not change. He simply lowered his hand, his posture rigid and towering.

The officiant stepped up to the microphone and began the ceremony. The words washed over Camila like static. He led them through hollow, meaningless rituals. He spoke of love, devotion, and eternity, and every single syllable felt like a cruel joke. They exchanged fake, scripted vows. Camila’s voice was a frail, trembling whisper, while Lorenzo’s voice was deep, flat, and devoid of any emotion.

Then, an attendant approached carrying a velvet box containing the rings.

The officiant instructed them to exchange the bands. Camila reached out. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she picked up Lorenzo's heavy gold ring. She stared at it, the metal glinting under the stage lights. It felt too heavy, a physical manifestation of the chains binding her to this stranger.

The officiant instructed her to place it on the groom's finger. Camila held her shaky hand out. Lorenzo offered his left hand, his face blank, clearly wanting this theatrical drama to end. Her fingers trembled so intensely she nearly dropped the smooth metal. She focused all her remaining willpower on the task, carefully sliding the heavy band onto his long finger, desperately ensuring she did not dare let her trembling skin brush against his warm flesh. The moment the ring was past his knuckle, she snatched her hands back and clasped them tight against her stomach.

Lorenzo picked up her diamond ring. He reached out, grabbing her left hand firmly. His touch was warm and brief as he slid the diamond onto her finger, releasing her the second the task was done.

The officiant smiled widely at the crowd. He finally pronounced them husband and wife, his voice booming over the speakers. The crowd erupted into loud, enthusiastic cheering.

Then, the officiant turned to Lorenzo and happily announced that the groom could now kiss his bride.

Panic instantly seized Camila's chest. Her breathing hitched, her eyes widening behind the veil. She stood frozen, waiting for the monster to strike.

She was momentarily relieved when Lorenzo remained rigid. He stood tall, staring straight ahead at the cheering crowd, making no move toward her whatsoever. The silence on the stage stretched for a long, agonizing second.

But then, Stefano Falcone, standing nearby, leaned forward. He sharply tapped his son's broad shoulder. Stefano leaned in close and whispered an aggressive, harsh command into Lorenzo’s ear.

Lorenzo frowned deeply, a dark shadow crossing his striking features. His jaw clenched in visible irritation.

He turned toward Camila and stepped forcefully into her personal space. His towering frame blocked out the stage lights, casting her in his shadow. He reached up, grabbing the edge of her veil, and flipped it back over her head. The cool air hit her face, but she had no time to process it.

Lorenzo cupped her pale cheeks firmly in his large, warm hands. His touch was not gentle; it was a possessive, dominating hold that kept her perfectly still. Camila closed her eyes tight, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

He slowly descended his head. She braced herself for a brutal, crushing kiss.

Instead, his lips barely brushed the extreme corner of her mouth. The contact was so incredibly light and fleeting that she couldn't even definitively tell if it qualified as a real kiss. He hovered there for a fraction of a second, his warm breath grazing her skin, performing the bare minimum required by his father’s command.

But in that split second, beneath the blinding, flashing lights of a hundred cameras, her very first kiss was officially and coldly stolen by her new husband.
