The Ultimatum
“I won’t marry that girl!”
Lorenzo Falcone’s shout shattered the quiet elegance of the lavish study. He grabbed the thick stack of contract papers off the mahogany desk and hurled them across the room. The heavy documents hit the edge of a leather armchair and scattered across the imported Persian rug. The crisp white pages looked like broken debris against the intricate red and gold patterns of the floor, a physical manifestation of his boiling rebellion.
Standing near the expansive floor-to-ceiling window, his father remained unfazed. Stefano Falcone did not flinch at the sound of the papers hitting the floor. He kept his broad back turned. His hands rested casually but firmly clasped behind his tailored suit jacket. He stared out at the sprawling city skyline, watching the distant lights flicker through the glass. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, before Stefano finally spoke.
“Lorenzo. Try to understand. This wedding is a necessity for the merger,” Stefano declared, his tone even and nonchalant.
“No, Father, it is not fucking possible,” Lorenzo growled, taking a step forward. “I won’t marry a slut like her.”
Lorenzo clenched his jaw until the bone ached. The muscles in his neck pulled tight as he glared at the back of his father’s head. His stormy grey eyes narrowed with suspicion.
“By the way,” Lorenzo continued, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. “I was supposed to marry the Gallo family’s elder daughter. Mila. She is refined. She knows our world. So tell me, why did they suddenly change the bride at the last moment? Why are they trying to pawn off the disgrace of their bloodline onto us?”
He knew the rumors surrounding the youngest Gallo daughter. The high society circles thrived on whispers, and Camila Gallo’s name was covered in dirt. She was known to be uneducated, manipulative, and ugly. Worse than that, she carried the tainted legacy of her late mother. Everyone in their circle knew the story. Dante Gallo’s first wife was a treacherous bitch who betrayed her husband and slept around. That was why Dante threw her out and married Mila’s mother. Now, the illegitimate spawn of that adulterous union was being offered up to the Falcone family. Lorenzo refused to be shackled to a girl who was following so intently in her whore mother's footsteps.
Stefano took his time turning away from the window. His expression looked carved from unyielding stone. He stepped over the scattered contract papers without giving them a single glance.
“We do not know why they changed the bride,” Stefano explained, his voice devoid of any warmth. “And frankly, I do not care. The actual identity, personality, or reputation of the girl is irrelevant. This arrangement is merely a three-year contract. It is a fake marriage designed exclusively to secure a lucrative business deal. It does not matter who the bride is.”
Lorenzo scoffed loudly. The sheer absurdity of the proposition made his blood run hot. “Are you serious, Dad? You want me to marry a whore for a business deal? You want me to tie the prestigious Falcone name to a piece of trash?”
He threw his hands in the air, pacing across the room. The antique furniture and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves felt like the bars of a cage closing in on him.
“You can’t force me to do anything,” Lorenzo spat, stopping to glare directly into his father’s cold eyes. “It’s my life, for fucks sake. I am not a pawn on your corporate chessboard.”
“Lorenzo, you have to marry her,” Stefano’s voice dropped, the feigned patience wearing thin. “I am not asking you. I am not giving you a choice.”
“I refuse.”
“I am ordering you!” Stefano roared. The thunderous sound reverberated off the mahogany walls, vibrating through the floorboards. Stefano closed the distance between them, his towering presence demanding submission. “This is inevitable. You will marry the Gallo girl. You will endure it for three years. After three years, whether you leave her, divorce her, or throw her out on the street, I will not stop you. I do not care what you do with her after the contract expires. But we need this multi-billion-dollar merger right now to strengthen our empire.”
Stefano Falcone was a terrifying man. He was a ruthless, calculating machine wrapped in expensive Italian wool. He had built the Falcone Empire on a foundation of blood, leverage, and sheer force of will. He was a brilliant businessman, but he had never been a father. He had never possessed a single ounce of concern for his child’s personal feelings, autonomy, or happiness. He only cared about power. He only cared about status.
He had meticulously raised his only son to be a mirror image of himself. He had forged Lorenzo in ice, teaching him to be cold, heartless, and cruel. He raised Lorenzo to be a living weapon, a vital asset designed to expand their dominion. Because of that brutal upbringing, Lorenzo now harbored an emotional void in his chest, matched only by the deep, festering hatred he felt for the man standing in front of him.
“I can’t believe you have become so blind,” Lorenzo snorted, refusing to back down. “You are so obsessed with this deal that you can’t even see the consequences. What about our reputation? What will the board say? What will our rivals say when you welcome a whore into our home and make her your daughter-in-law? Are you not afraid that your respect in this society will plummet?”
Stefano’s eyes darkened. “Mind your tongue, Lorenzo.”
“No. You want me to play house with a girl who belongs in the gutter. It’s pathetic.”
“I do not care about trivial societal gossip!” Stefano barked, his face inching closer to Lorenzo’s. “Only money and power speak in this world. I can shut their mouths with my influence. You have no idea the magnitude of the wealth we will acquire from this merger. This new status will elevate the Falcone family to a height of success no one has ever reached.”
Stefano let out a low, cunning smirk. “So, no. It will not hurt to make a girl like her a Falcone for three short years. But remember this. You must adhere strictly to the terms. You will stay in this marriage for the full three years. Do not make me repeat myself.”
Lorenzo stared at his father. The sheer audacity of the demand twisted his stomach. He was expected to sacrifice his freedom, his name, and his pride for a signature on a piece of paper. He was expected to share a home with a disgusting, uneducated manipulator.
“Then please excuse me,” Lorenzo said, his tone shifting to a flat, bored drawl. He adjusted the cuffs of his shirt. “Because I have no plans to get married. I will not ruin my entire life and spoil my reputation for a fucking business deal.”
Refusing to be treated as a mindless pawn any longer, Lorenzo abruptly turned on his heel. He marched toward the heavy oak door. He was done. He had enough of this conversation. He would pack a bag, head to a hotel, and let his father sort out the mess with the Gallo family himself.
“Lorenzo. You cannot defy me like this,” Stefano warned.
Lorenzo did not stop walking. His hand reached out. His long fingers grasped the cool brass handle of the door. He turned the latch.
“If you leave this room, I will disown you.”
The words cut through the air like a guillotine blade. Lorenzo froze. The brass handle remained half-turned in his grip.
“I will evict you from my property,” Stefano stated, his voice dropping to a lethally calm, definitive pitch. He had played his ultimate, inescapable trump card. “You will lose your right over the Falcone Empire. Everything I have built, everything you are supposed to inherit, will be gone. You will walk out that door with nothing but the clothes on your back.”
The immense weight of the threat anchored Lorenzo’s feet instantly to the floor. The Falcone Empire was his birthright. It was the only thing he had ever worked for. He had bled for the family business. He had sacrificed his soul to become the ruthless heir his father demanded. To lose it all over a worthless girl from the Gallo family was unthinkable.
An inferno of anger burned fiercely through his veins. His blood rushed hot and fast in his ears. His deeply ingrained killer instinct begged to be unleashed. The primal urge to turn around, wrap his hands around his father’s throat, and squeeze the life out of him surged through his muscles. He wanted to kill the man pulling his strings.
Lorenzo stood frozen at the door. He squeezed the brass handle until his knuckles turned bone white. He clenched his jaw, physically choking down the suffocating rage that threatened to consume him. He took a slow, deep breath, forcing the violent beast inside him back into its cage. He needed the empire. He needed the power. He could not throw it away.
Slowly, agonizingly, Lorenzo released the door handle. He turned back to face his father.
His striking features settled into a mask of dark, emotionless stone. The fire in his grey eyes vanished, leaving behind a cold, dead void. He locked his gaze onto Stefano.
“Fine, Dad,” Lorenzo accepted, his voice a low, terrifying growl. He raised his chin, his pride bruised but his resolve hardening into steel. “You won. I will marry the girl. Now, are you happy?”
Stefano’s lips curled into a triumphant, satisfied grin. He had broken his son’s defiance, just as he always did.
“I appreciate your decision, son,” Stefano said arrogantly, stepping back toward the desk. “Trust me, this is good for everyone. Now, you may leave.”
Without offering Lorenzo another glance, Stefano bypassed him. He pulled his phone from his inner jacket pocket and dialed a number. The line picked up immediately.
“Bianca, darling,” Stefano ordered his wife, his tone brisk and commanding. “The boy agreed. Commence the grand wedding preparations immediately. We do not have a second to delay. Call the Gallo family and confirm the date.”
Lorenzo did not wait to hear the rest of the conversation. He pushed the heavy oak door open and stormed out of the stifling study.
The air in the grand, empty hallway felt just as oppressive. Lorenzo’s heart felt like it was being clawed to shreds by a vicious, consuming hatred. He walked down the corridor, his heavy footsteps echoing against the marble floors. His mind raced with images of the upcoming nightmare. Three years. He had to spend three long, miserable years legally bound to an unwanted, repulsive woman.
The thought of Camila Gallo breathing the same air as him, sleeping under his roof, carrying his last name, filled his stomach with visceral disgust. She was a gold-digger. She was the spawn of a whore. She was a pawn who had somehow managed to trap him in this gilded cage.
“Fuck!” Lorenzo groaned loudly.
The frustration boiled over. He lashed out, swinging his leg and violently kicking the pristine plaster wall. His heavy leather shoe connected with a sickening crunch. The impact left a noticeable, jagged dent in the immaculate white surface. Plaster dust fluttered to the floor.
He stood there in the opulent void of his family's mansion, his chest heaving. He stared blankly at the dent in the wall. The anger inside him shifted. It morphed from the helpless rage directed at his untouchable father, into a sharp, focused malice aimed directly at his future bride.
She was the reason for this. The Gallo family forced this swap, and Camila was the weapon they used to ruin his life. She was the parasite attaching itself to his legacy.
His stormy eyes darkened with a cruel, vicious promise. If he was forced to endure this marriage, he would ensure she suffered every single second of it. He would make her beg for the contract to end. He would break her spirit until she was nothing but a hollow shell.
“Wait for the worst to come, Camila Gallo,” Lorenzo whispered into the silence of the hallway, his voice dripping with venom. He gritted his teeth, sealing her tragic fate in his mind. “I will make your life a living hell. Welcome to hell.”
