Time slowed as Camille guided me toward the backstage. I felt everyone’s eyes on us, watching like owls in the night, ready to seize their next meal.

Camille’s hand was warm on my back as she gently steered me toward the backstage. There were people there—people in shiny, sparkly dresses—but I was already blinded by my fear, too intimidated to look at any of them. My hands were clammy, and
