The Specter

**Elysia**

The thick, acrid scent of burnt gun smoke burns the back of my throat, clinging to the damp night air. My ears are still ringing from the deafening blast of the warning shot. The atmosphere around the manicured patio is suffocating, heavy with a lethal, crackling tension that makes my skin crawl.

Vincenzo's face is a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. "Leave her out of this," my father demands loudly, his voice echoing with a rigid, desperate authority.

Valerio does not even flinch at the command. If anything, my father's visible, explosive fury only seems to feed his dark amusement. A devilish smirk spreads across the mobster's handsome face, a look that promises nothing but sheer destruction and chaos.

"Why should I?" Valerio openly challenges, his tone dripping with a mocking, dangerous curiosity. "You're the one hiding her, Vincenzo."

"She has nothing to do with anything!" Vincenzo yells, his fists clenching hard at his sides as he stares down the barrel of the situation.

"Now, now," Valerio chuckles, a low, rumbling sound that vibrates straight through my spine. "I'll be the judge of that."

Before my frantic mind can even begin to process the terrifying power dynamic shifting between the two men, Valerio's arm flexes. He yanks me around, spinning me so fast the lawn and the crowd blur into a dizzying smear of colors. He plants me directly in front of him. I am trapped in his overpowering presence, boxed in by his broad shoulders and unyielding stance. His suit jacket brushes against my bare arms, the fine Italian wool a stark contrast to the cold steel of the weapon he just fired. Being this close to him feels akin to standing face-to-face with Satan himself.

He leans down, invading my space. The distance between us vanishes until we are so intimate that even the slightest, accidental movement from me would cause our heads to collide. I swallow hard, my throat sandpaper dry. My wide, terrified gaze locks onto his golden-brown eyes. They are intense, predatory, pinning me in place like a fragile insect under glass.

With a slow, deliberate motion, he lifts his free hand. His thumb reaches up, the rough pad of his skin pressing firm against me to trace the sharp line of my jaw. His skin is calloused, a tactile reminder of the violence he orchestrates on a daily basis. The physical contact burns like a brand.

"We will be having a little chat together very soon, okay?" he murmurs in a low, vibrating tone that bypasses my ears and settles straight in my bones.

My heart hammers against my ribs, thrashing like a trapped animal. I am incapable of drawing a full breath, let alone forming a coherent sentence in response. What am I supposed to say to a threat like that? Ask if he prefers tea or coffee? In silence, I pray to God that it isn't my blood he is looking to spill on the pristine grass tonight.

Valerio's gaze flickers over my paralyzed features one last time. He delivers one final, deliberate wink. Then, he leans back, breaking the suffocating, terrifying spell. He pockets his weapon with practiced ease, sliding the dark metal away as if he hasn't just held an entire party hostage at gunpoint, and walks away into the shadows like he owns the night.

The exact second his supportive, trapping grip vanishes from my waist, my weak legs give out. Gravity takes over. My knees buckle beneath my own weight. I plummet toward the hard stone patio, bracing for the harsh, unforgiving impact against my skin.

I never hit the ground.

Tristan lunges forward, a sudden blur of motion. His strong arms catch me mid-fall, hauling me securely against his chest. All around us, the surrounding mobsters lower their drawn firearms, step by cautious step, though their eyes remain locked on one another.

"Are you okay? Are you hurt somewhere?" Tristan asks, his voice laced with panic, his hands hovering over my arms as his eyes scan my face and body for any hidden injuries.

I blink, my vision swimming as I try to make sense of the sudden de-escalation. I manage a shaky whisper. "I'm okay."

Physically, I am whole. Internally, I am shattered. My nerves are fried, deeply rattled by my up-close encounter with the ruthless man known as The Specter. I need a therapist to unpack the sheer terror of staring the devil in the eye.

Vincenzo storms toward us, his face pale and tight. "Tristan, take Elysia to my office," he barks, his strict orders leaving no room for argument.

Tristan keeps me pinned against his side. Without a single word of hesitation, he escorts me away from the gaping crowd, leading me deep into the sprawling mansion. He walks fast, his grip iron-clad, practically carrying my dead weight through the winding, silent hallways. The sounds of the outdoor party fade into a tense, suffocating silence the deeper we go into the house. The grand chandeliers overhead cast long, distorted shadows across the marble floors, mirroring the chaos twisting in my gut.

"You can let me walk now, I'm okay," I reassure him once we cross the threshold into the quiet interior. He loosens his grip a fraction but remains close, acting as a protective guard all the way to our destination.

We step into Vincenzo’s private sanctuary. The room is decorated in a classic, mahogany-styled aesthetic. A massive desk dominates the left side, backed by a heavy leather chair. Two small couches sit facing each other over a round black table, while floor-to-ceiling windows line the right wall.

I collapse heavy onto the leather couch. I press the heels of my hands against my throbbing temples, forcefully massaging the sudden spike of pain. My mind spins out of control. I try to comprehend how a simple, polite introduction on the patio escalated into a near-shootout in the blink of an eye.

Tristan walks over to the built-in minibar. He grabs a cold bottle of water, cracks the seal, and hands it to me. He steps back but remains standing close by my side, a silent, unmoving sentinel.

I take a long, desperate gulp of the cold water. It does nothing to soothe the burning knot of anxiety lodged in my throat.

"You good?" Tristan asks, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his thighs as he studies my pale face.

"Yeah, I'm good," I groan, tossing my head back against the cushion. "I'm just so confused right now."

Before I can gather my scattered thoughts, the heavy oak door swings open, hitting the wall with a dull thud. Vincenzo storms into the office. The air pressure in the room shifts in an instant.

He marches straight toward his heavy desk and leans his weight hard against the thick wooden edge. He shoots me a furious, condemning glare, his chest heaving with every ragged breath he takes.

"Do you have any idea the massive magnitude of trouble you have brought upon yourself by showing up here tonight?" he demands, his voice a harsh whip.

My jaw drops in pure indignation.

The residual fear evaporates, replaced by a sudden, scorching wave of righteous anger.

"How the hell have I caused any trouble by showing up?" I erupt, screaming the words back at him as my voice echoes off the wood-paneled walls.

"Watch your language," Vincenzo snaps, pointing a sharp, warning finger at me.

I ignore him, my temper flaring beyond my control. I throw my hands in the air. "Besides, I should be the one asking questions! That terrifying man said some really creepy stuff about me out there. I want answers!" I cross my arms tight over my chest, glaring right back at him.

"Why did he call me a Castiglione, hmm?" I question, my tone aggressive as I lean forward to close the distance. "And why in the world did he insist that I died three years ago?"

The fight drains from Vincenzo. His rigid posture collapses into itself. He closes his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose in total defeat, the intimidating mafia boss suddenly replaced by an exhausted, graying man. The silence stretches between us, thick and suffocating, before he finally speaks.

"I was only trying to protect you, figlia," he murmurs, his voice stripped of its previous thunder. "But I fear I have done more harm than good."

"Protect me from what?" I snap back, a cold dread pooling in the pit of my stomach.

"I didn't want you getting involved in this mess. But since he knows you are well and alive, there is no point hiding this from you." He pushes off the desk and walks over to the minibar.

Grabbing a crystal decanter, he pours a heavy glass of amber liquor. He brings the rim to his lips and downs it in one fluid gulp, slamming the empty glass down onto the counter.

He motions for me to sit down properly. I do. He takes the leather seat opposite me. Tristan shifts in the periphery, standing near the door, acting as a silent wall absorbing every word.

Vincenzo's eyes meet mine. His voice goes flat and clinical.

"I am only going to tell you what you strictly need to hear," Vincenzo declares. "I faked your death in a car crash when I initiated a volatile business partnership with the Moretti family."

The words hang in the air, foreign and shocking.

"At first, things went well. But it went sour," he continues, his words precise. "A massive mafia war almost erupted. My greatest fear was the Morettis finding you and using you as leverage against me. So, I fabricated your demise."

He finishes his confession and shrugs his shoulders, treating the revelation of erasing his daughter's existence from the world as if it were nothing more than a minor administrative error.

I sit frozen on the leather cushion. My eyes stretch wide. My jaw drops open in pure, unadulterated disbelief as I stare at my father, my mind spinning, desperately struggling to process the massive, life-altering betrayal he just laid at my feet.
