"D...Did I do wrong?" Fletcher's voice was filled with confusion as his gaze fell on me. "Mama... what's wrong with your eyes?"

I paused, torn between telling him the truth and protecting him from it.

"Don't lie to me like Papa did, Mama," Fletcher added softly. I could feel his gaze on me, sharp and insistent, and it made me swallow the words I had prepared.
