A Brand New Plan
Valerie's POV
Gamma Briggs did not merely escort me away from the hospital; he roughly, unforgivingly dragged me back to the main pack manor like a dangerous criminal. The journey across the sprawling pack lands felt like a suffocating march toward the gallows. We were surrounded by the heavy, oppressive silence of pack members who lined the paved stone pathways. These were my people. Some of them had even belonged to my late father’s pack before the merger that made Kaelen Alpha. Yet now, as I was hauled past them, they averted their eyes. They shrank back into the dense shadows of the trees. Not a single one of them dared speak up for their Luna. The stinging reality of their silence weighed on my shoulders, heavier than any physical chains could ever be.
When Briggs shoved me through the massive double doors of the manor, the immediate shift in the atmosphere hit me like a physical blow. The manor’s usual warmth and life were gone, replaced by a chilling, hollow stillness. The cheerful morning chatter of the omegas, the bright smiles of the staff, the familiar scent of fresh pine and polished wood—it had all vanished. The grand entryway was now a barren tomb. Only my fiercely loyal maid, Gemma, remained. She stood near the sweeping staircase, her pale face tight with sorrow, forced to witness my profound humiliation.
Briggs shoved me forcefully inside the entryway, making me stumble over the expensive woven rug. He slammed the heavy oak door shut behind us, the echoing boom ringing off the high, vaulted ceilings.
"Listen up, Valerie," Briggs sneered, his voice dripping with malice. He stood tall, puffing out his chest as he delivered Kaelen's cold, final decree. "You are strictly restricted to the Alpha residence. You are not to step foot outside these walls. Furthermore, you are explicitly ordered to stay far away from Celia. I will not tolerate any more of your unhinged outbursts."
I steadied myself, refusing to let him see the tremor in my hands. "You think you have the right to bark orders at me in my own home?" I asked, my voice raw and raspy.
A dark, predatory smirk spread across Briggs's face. He stepped forward, leaning in dangerously close and trapping me against the heavy wooden door. He raised his hand, closing the distance to let his rough fingers graze my lips in a blatant, sickening display of disrespect. The foul stench of his breath made my stomach churn in disgust.
"You'd better behave yourself, Valerie," he mocked, his tone laced with venomous amusement. "You're not a noble, high-and-mighty Luna anymore. You're just a problem that needs managing."
A blinding, white-hot fury exploded within my chest, burning through the icy numbness of Kaelen's ongoing betrayal. I did not hesitate. I drew back my hand and slapped him so hard across the face that the sharp crack echoed deafeningly through the grand hall.
"Remember your place, Briggs!" I spat back, my voice laced with the undeniable command of an Alpha bloodline. "I am still the Luna! Try to touch me like that again, and I swear to the Goddess you will leave this manor with one less hand."
His cheek flushed a furious, blotchy red. Humiliated and enraged, a dangerous flash of primal anger crossed his features. He bared his teeth, stepping back from me. "I will be waiting for you to slip up, Valerie. I will be waiting right at the border of the pack," he threatened, a dark promise lingering in the air. He spun on his heel, stormed out of the manor, and slammed the door so hard the crystal chandelier above us violently shuddered.
Once I was finally alone in the suffocating silence of the hall, my shaking legs gave out. I stumbled up the winding staircase to my bedroom and collapsed onto the hardwood floor. The fiery adrenaline from striking Briggs drained away in a matter of seconds, and a much deeper, profound terror quickly set in.
I closed my eyes and reached inward, desperately searching the spiritual void for my wolf, Zira.
*Zira?* I called out through our mental link, my inner voice trembling. *I need you. Please, answer me.*
Silence.
The space inside my mind was cold and impossibly empty. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. I tried again, pushing past the agonizing pain of Kaelen's rejection, diving deeper into the very core of my soul to find her. It felt like reaching out in a pitch-black room, searching for a comforting hand that was no longer there.
Nothing.
The mystical connection to my wolf had been fundamentally severed. It felt exactly like a merciless, agonizing punishment from the Moon Goddess herself. Kaelen's betrayal had not just broken my human heart; it had stripped away the one piece of my soul that still believed I could survive this nightmare. Her absence echoed through my hollow bones.
Hot, bitter tears finally spilled over my lashes, tracking down my cheeks and dripping onto the floorboards. I curled into myself, letting the raw grief consume me.
A soft rustle of fabric broke the suffocating silence. Gemma knelt quietly beside me, her presence a sudden grounding force in the swirling chaos of my mind. She did not offer empty platitudes or pitying sighs. Instead, she reached out, gently brushing a stray strand of hair from my damp cheek with her calloused fingers.
"We'll find her. Together," Gemma promised in a fierce whisper.
I let out a ragged sob, my throat burning. "She's gone, Gemma. I can't feel her. The bond is just... dead."
"She is a part of you. She isn't gone," Gemma insisted, her voice steady and unwavering. "You are not alone, sweetheart. Not while I am still breathing."
Her steady loyalty wrapped around my battered spirit, becoming my only safe harbor in a territory that had betrayed me. Her touch grounded me, and her quiet strength forcibly sparked my resolve. I could not just lay here on the floor, waiting to rot into a pathetic ghost wearing a crown of broken memories.
I wiped my face and pushed myself off the floor. I waited until Gemma stepped out of the room to fetch fresh towels, leaving me alone in the sprawling, gilded cage of my bedroom.
Once left alone, I crept to the deepest, darkest corner of my sprawling antique wardrobe. I dropped to my knees, reaching past the heavy winter coats and silken gowns to the very back, where the cleaning staff never dusted. My fingers brushed against the wooden false bottom I had installed myself. I pried the panel up and unearthed a small, velvet-lined keepsake box. Inside lay a hidden, untraceable burner phone I had secretly stashed away years ago for emergencies.
With trembling fingers, I powered the small device on. The battery icon glowed a dim orange, and the signal was incredibly weak, but it was just enough to make a call. I dialed the only number I knew by heart, the only person outside these walls I could truly trust.
"Evelina?" I breathed the second the line clicked open.
"Valerie? What is going on? Whose number is this?" her voice rang out, laced with sudden alarm.
"I need your help," I told her, my voice urgent as I paced the length of my room like a caged lioness. The walls felt like they were shrinking, pressing in on me from all sides.
"Are you okay? You sound terrified."
I rapidly explained the horrifying details of the last twenty-four hours. I told her about Celia strutting into the pack hospital, proudly pregnant with Kaelen's 'true love' heir. I told her about the deafening cheers of the pack members who wanted a fertile mother over their rightful Luna. I told her about my sudden and unjust imprisonment within the Alpha residence under Briggs's watch. And, hardest of all, I told her about the terrifying disappearance of Zira from my mind.
"Oh, my Goddess," Evelina gasped, her voice thick with pure horror. "Valerie, I... what can I even do? You are locked inside his territory."
"Darius," I said quickly, the name tasting like a desperate lifeline. "Can you talk to your brother? Maybe he can help me. He sits on the council. Maybe there's a way he knows to break the mate bond without me losing my rightful title."
A stunned, heavy silence stretched over the line. "You want to divorce Kaelen?" she asked, her voice hushed with shock.
The horrific events of the past few days replayed in my mind's eye like a burning, agonizing film reel. Kaelen cradling Celia against his chest. Kaelen staring at me with unadulterated ice. Kaelen ordering his guards to banish me away like toxic waste. When a man tries to strip away your voice, your freedom, and your dignity, he ceases to be your mate. He becomes your enemy.
"Yes," I answered, my voice hardening into unyielding steel. "I want out."
Evelina let out a long, heavy sigh, the sound crackling through the weak signal. "Valerie, you know the council's legendary brutality. You know their bias against female Alphas. They will drag your name through the mud before they let you walk away with your title intact. Even with Darius's influence, this won't be an easy fight."
"I wasn't looking for easy, Evelina," I replied fiercely, my grip tightening on the small phone. "I was looking for possible."
"Okay. Okay, I'll talk to him. I will pull whatever strings I can. But you have to stay quiet until I reach back out. Kaelen has eyes and ears everywhere."
"I know. Thank you."
After hanging up, I sank onto the edge of my mattress. My exhausted thoughts drifted inevitably to Darius. The formidable, intimidating, silver-eyed councilman. I remembered watching him during his diplomatic visits to my father's pack. I had foolishly crushed on him as an awkward teen, daydreaming about his composed, untouchably regal aura. But I wasn't that naive little girl anymore, wishing for a powerful Alpha to simply notice her.
I was a deeply betrayed political prisoner trapped in my own home. And Darius was my absolute only hope to untangle this deadly web.
A gentle knock echoed through the heavy wooden door, pulling me from my swirling thoughts. "Luna? I brought your evening tea," Gemma called out softly from the hallway.
I scrambled quickly to hide the burner phone, shoving it deep under the heavy mattress. I smoothed out the blankets, making sure no visible trace of my rebellion remained.
"Just leave the tray at the door, Gemma," I called back, keeping my tone even. "I just need to rest."
"Yes, Luna."
I listened closely, waiting until the heavy click of the closing door faded into the silent hallway. Once I was sure no one was lingering outside to eavesdrop, I resumed pacing my gilded prison. My bare feet padded softly against the cold floorboards.
I closed my eyes, actively pulling strength from the past. I pictured my late father standing tall on the training grounds, his voice booming with pride and unshakeable authority. I remembered the scent of the snow-covered forests from my childhood. I recalled Zira's powerful first words to me, the fiery, untamed rush of our very first shift under the blood-red moonlight. Those memories belonged to me, and Kaelen could never steal them.
I opened my eyes and stared out the reinforced glass window, looking out over the sprawling, darkened pack lands that had turned their back on me. I had almost no friends here. I had no political voice to defend myself. And currently, I had no wolf to lend me her ancient strength.
But a fierce, unyielding fire still burned deep inside my chest, and I would use that very fire to burn Kaelen's pathetic lies straight to the ground.
