Saving the Alpha
POV: Avery
The overwhelmingly intoxicating scent of deep cedar, sharp mint, and something dangerously dark and untamed physically wrapped around my senses. It coated the back of my throat, thick and demanding, acting like an invisible, heavy chain that relentlessly pulled me deeper into the treacherous heart of the ancient Murmur Woods. My rational, self-preserving mind screamed at me, the frantic warnings flashing vividly behind my eyes. *Turn back. Run. This is the forbidden zone.* Every lesson the Academy instructors ever taught us echoed loudly in my skull. Wolfless students were explicitly forbidden from wandering the dark paths alone.
But my body moved entirely of its own accord. I was completely captive to the scent. I stepped over twisted tree roots and pushed through the dense underbrush, my boots sinking into the wet, cold moss. Soon, a new odor assaulted me. The heavy metallic tang of fresh, spilled blood mixed with the distinctly foul, rotting stench of lethal shadow-poison. It smelled like decaying earth and burned copper. The toxic smell entirely overpowered the biting evening chill, making my stomach churn with a sudden, violent wave of nausea.
Pushing my way blindly through a thick, thorny curtain of hanging vines, I ignored the sharp thorns that sliced into my bare arms and left thin, stinging trails of blood. I violently stumbled forward, breaking through the dense foliage, and found myself in a hidden, sacred clearing perfectly ringed by colossal, ancient standing stones.
There, lying helpless beneath the sprawling, gnarled branches of a massive, ancient oak tree, was a wolf.
It wasn't just any ordinary beast. It was a colossal, terrifyingly huge silver-black Alpha. Even collapsed on the cold dirt, his sheer scale was breathtaking and horrifying. His massive ribs heaved with ragged, failing breaths. His silver-black fur was matted with thick, dark gore. Deep, oozing purple-black gashes brutally scored his heavily muscular hindquarters. The festering wounds screamed of fast-acting, deadly raider toxins. The shadow-poison was literally bubbling and eating his flesh right before my eyes, sending up faint wisps of dark, foul-smelling smoke.
Every single survival instinct drilled into me begged me to immediately flee from a dying, unpredictable Alpha. A cornered, poisoned predator of this immense size could effortlessly snap my spine with a single, desperate bite.
Instead, my knees gave out entirely. I dropped heavily to the damp dirt beside his massive head. He was rapidly slipping away. I could physically feel his immense body temperature plummeting dangerously, the icy coldness radiating from his dark fur as the dark corruption aggressively spread through his veins.
I had to save him. Working with a frantic, laser-focused intensity born of pure desperation, I scrambled up and wildly scavenged the sacred clearing. My mind locked instantly onto the exact botanical ingredients drilled into my memory from my Advanced Healing Theory classes.
I rushed toward the colossal standing stones. I found scattered fragments of fallen moonstone in the dirt, pulsing with a faint, dying inner light. I snatched them up, completely ignoring the sharp stinging of my aggressively bleeding palms as I frantically ground the jagged rocks together into a fine, shimmering powder. Next, I sprinted back to the massive oak tree. Thick vines wrapped around the ancient trunk like massive serpents. I dug my fingernails directly into their stems, forcing them apart to carefully harvest the glowing, luminescent sap of the rare moon-vines, letting the sticky fluid drip heavily over my cut fingers. Finally, I dropped to the ground near the shadowy edges of the clearing and violently uprooted shimmering silver-leaf plants from the earth. The soil was dense and packed, resisting my grip, but I ripped them free with everything I had, exposing their potent, shimmering roots.
I crawled desperately back to the dying Alpha, dumping the raw ingredients into the bowl of my cupped, bleeding hands. I reached out to a broad leaf nearby, tipping fresh, cold evening dew into the mixture to bind it. Staring at the horrific state of the wolf, I desperately whispered an ancient, powerful prayer I had only ever read in old, dusty texts.
"Moon Mother, grant healing, drive back the shadow."
Instantly, defying all biological logic I had ever known, the messy paste began to vividly glow.
And so did my hands. The bright silver light bled directly from my very skin.
I stared down at my palms in sheer shock, feeling an immense, ancient stirring awakening deep within my chest. But the massive Alpha's violently failing, rattling breath snapped me violently out of my trance. The horrible, wet sound demanded my absolute, immediate attention.
"Please don't die," I whispered a frantic plea. I leaned directly over him, cradling his terrifyingly massive head heavily in my lap. The sheer weight of his skull pushed down on my thighs. "I didn't come all this way just to watch you perish."
With trembling fingers, I forcefully pried his terrifying, razor-sharp jaws open. The deadly fangs pressed dangerously against my soft skin, capable of severing my hand, but I refused to stop. I tilted his massive head back and carefully, deliberately poured the luminescent, glowing liquid directly down his throat.
The exact millisecond my bare fingers brushed against his wet tongue, a sensation like pure lightning exploded violently through my veins.
It wasn't pain. It was a sudden, monumental awakening. It started at my fingertips—a scorching surge of raw electricity that shot directly up my arms and slammed straight into my heart. It felt as though my very blood had instantly turned to liquid starlight. My racing heartbeat perfectly, seamlessly synchronized with the ancient forest itself. Every nerve ending in my body ignited with raw, crackling power.
The massive wolf violently convulsed in my lap. Blinding silver light erupted from his massive frame, forcefully driving the hissing, dark poison directly from his flesh. The toxic purple-black smoke evaporated into the night air as the light miraculously knitted the fatal, oozing wounds closed right before my very eyes.
An overwhelming, blinding wave of pure moonlight completely engulfed his shifting form. The sheer force of the magic forced me to scramble backward, squeezing my eyes shut. The terrifying sound of heavy bones cracking, stretching, and rapidly reforming echoed sharply in the silent clearing.
As the intense radiance finally faded away into the night air, I opened my eyes.
A stunningly beautiful, completely naked man lay precisely where the giant wolf had been.
Intense, burning heat violently flooded my face. I immediately slapped my hands tightly over my eyes. I shouldn't look. But my treacherous, intensely curious fingers parted just enough to allow me to freely peek at his exposed body.
He was breathtaking. I stared openly at his incredibly lean, heavily muscular build. The pale moonlight washed over his broad chest, highlighting the deep, sculpted ridges of his abdomen and the thick, powerful muscles of his thighs. Resting heavily against his thigh was his thick, bare cock, completely exposed to the cool forest air. I swallowed hard, my gaze snapping frantically up to his face. He had flawlessly sharp features that looked as though they were carved directly from moonlight itself. A strong, chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, and dark hair that exactly matched the silver-black fur of his wolf form.
The overwhelming, pure scent of his deep cedar and sharp mint sank deeply into my lungs, making my head spin with dizzying intoxication.
Trembling violently, I forced my hands away from my face. I tore off my own uniform jacket and carefully leaned forward on my knees, draping the dark fabric directly over his naked form. I was acutely aware that it was a pathetically inadequate cover for his large body, barely stretching across his hips and groin to afford him any real modesty.
"Just a professional assessment," I frantically whispered to myself, trying desperately to steady my violently racing heart. "I'm just conducting a professional assessment."
I tentatively reached my bare hand toward a small, lingering cut on his forehead, needing to make absolutely sure the shadow-poison was truly gone.
My fingertips were barely an inch from his pale skin when his ice-blue eyes snapped open.
They weren't human eyes. Vertical, highly predatory pupils fiercely dilated, intensely locking onto mine with lethal, unbreakable focus.
Faster than I could even blink, his large hand shot out. He clamped like an iron vise around my delicate wrist, the sheer physical power in his grip instantly paralyzing me. At the exact same second, his other hand possessively threaded deep into my hair. His thick fingers firmly cradled the back of my head, anchoring me tightly in his grasp.
With an unstoppable, dominant force, he aggressively pulled me down toward him. The intoxicating scent of cedar and mint completely engulfed me.
His lips parted, and his voice was a deep, vibrating rumble that rattled through my own chest as he made his claim.
"Mine."
