A Luna's Farewell
Genevieve
She took her time carrying the last of her belongings down the sweeping staircase, taking measured steps to savor the quiet. The heavy cardboard box rested against her hip, filled with the remnants of a life that no longer belonged to her. This sprawling packhouse had served as her luxurious prison for eight years. Closing the thick oak doors of the Luna Suite behind her for the final time brought a strange, hollow sense of finality. The chapter was closed. It was done.
Through the waning, frayed edges of her severed pack bond, Tessa felt a sudden shift in the territory's energy. Maddox was moving. He had physically left the pack borders about ten minutes ago. She paused on the landing, her brow furrowing in confusion. His sleek black SUV remained parked in its designated spot near the training grounds. That meant he had stalked out of the territory on foot, heading deep into the dense, untamed woods. Extending her senses slightly, she picked up the familiar signatures of his elite security unit. They were all still inside the packhouse. He had left them behind. He was out there roaming the wild alone.
Tessa shook her head, adjusting her grip on the heavy box. She couldn't fathom why he would wander off alone into the trees right now. Their mating alliance was legally null and void. The ink on the separation agreement wasn't even dry yet. Logically, she figured he would be itching to drag his new mate into his bedroom. He should be marking her, claiming her, erasing the lingering memories of the chosen mate he had just legally discarded. If she were in his shoes, she would be out sealing the bond to finalize the transition and secure the pack's future. Maybe he took Vivienne with him to mate under the open sky? That wouldn't breach any remaining pack laws.
It didn’t matter anymore. She nodded politely to Vaughn, who stood sentinel near the bottom steps, honoring his final guard duty to ensure the new Luna didn't attack her. Stepping past the Beta, Tessa walked out the front doors and into the bright sunlight for the final time.
She froze on the front steps.
A massive, silent crowd filled the paved courtyard. Pack members, battle-hardened warriors, and young omegas stood shoulder to shoulder. They had gathered to see her off, their expressions heavy with sorrow and quiet mourning. Nobody moved to approach her, keeping a respectful, hesitant distance, but their eyes tracked her every movement.
Near the front of the crowd stood Jess. The young woman was heavily pregnant, swaying slightly on her swollen feet. Sweat beaded on her pale forehead, and her face was contorted with visible distress.
Tessa sighed softly, letting her guard down. She walked past the staring faces, set her box in the trunk of the Mercedes SUV, closed it with a solid thud, and walked back over to the gathered members. She offered them a gentle, reassuring smile before turning her full attention to the terrified mother-to-be.
"I'm due tomorrow, and you're leaving today," Jess murmured, her hands clutching her belly. Her voice trembled, thick with raw fear. "You're supposed to deliver my pup."
Tessa reached out and pulled the trembling woman into a gentle, grounding hug. She was acutely aware of Jess's heartbreaking medical history. Two lost pups before Tessa was brought to Obsidian Moon. Then, a traumatic, brutal birth with her last child that nearly ended in tragedy in the delivery room. The fear radiating from Jess wasn't just typical anxiety; it was deep, paralyzing terror of facing death alone.
"I know," Tessa said softly, rubbing soothing circles on Jess's back. "But Dr. Miriam will take over the delivery now. She is more than capable. If you're really worried, I'll contact Gamma Declan. He can stand in the delivery suite with you and use his Gamma Charm to keep your vitals steady. I’m sure he won’t mind one last request from me."
Jess pulled back, shaking her head frantically. Tears welled in her bright eyes. "But you've never lost a pup. You've never lost one of us."
Seeing the blind panic setting in the mother's eyes, Tessa relented slightly. Her healer's instinct flared, refusing to leave a patient in this fragile state. "Everything will be fine. Just breathe and stay calm, just like you did when you had Hope. Have a little faith that this little girl will be strong." She offered a warm smile, brushing a stray lock of damp hair from Jess's forehead. "You know, I don’t have to leave right this second. What say we go for a walk before I go, hey? Just to stretch your legs and clear your head before the big day."
Jess let out a shaky breath and nodded eagerly, linking her arm tightly through Tessa's.
They strolled slowly away from the packhouse courtyard, heading down the winding, tree-lined path toward the town center. The crisp morning breeze ruffled their hair, carrying the familiar scent of pine and fresh earth. For a while, they walked in a comfortable silence, the rhythmic crunch of gravel beneath their shoes serving as a soothing distraction from the impending farewell.
"Do you know anything about the new Luna we are getting?" Jess asked nervously, breaking the quiet with a hushed tone.
"No," Tessa answered, shaking her head. She had no interest in learning about the woman taking her place in Maddox's bed and his life. "I'm sure she'll be lovely, though."
Jess let out a dark huff, leaning closer. "I heard a rumor from the kitchen staff. They said Vivienne already yelled at the Alpha in the dining room this morning."
Tessa snorted out loud, a genuine, unladylike sound of amusement escaping her lips. Maddox had a fierce, dominant temper. She had seen it directed at her once, and that single, terrifying display had been enough to ensure she never incurred his wrath again. "He'll yell right back to assert his authority. He doesn't bow to anyone. They’ll settle once they’re marked and mated. Things will be all good once I’m gone from the pack. It’s normal for a Goddess-Gifted to be unhappy about her mate having a prior history. They just need space to sort out their dynamic."
"I don't want you to go," Jess whispered, her grip on Tessa's arm tightening. "None of us do. The whole pack is sick over this."
Tessa's voice took on a clinical, detached tone. She needed to smooth over the pack's unrest before she departed. "That is nice to hear, Jess, but it isn't up to any of you. It never was. Maddox found his Goddess-Gifted and brought her home. I always knew I was merely the Chosen Luna, waiting on a timer for the inevitable rejection. He told you all from the start what my position was. I have to step aside."
The severed bond still pulsed deep in her chest, a raw, burning ache that spiked whenever his name hung in the air. But she relied heavily on her innate Luna's Calm to push the agony down. She had comforted countless wolves through rejection over the past eight years. She knew the medical reality of it. The physical pain would take months to fade, eventually settling into a dull memory. Then, she would move on.
Down in the bustling town square, Tessa guided Jess toward the small outdoor café. There was no immediate rush to flee. Technically, the separation agreement gave her until tomorrow lunchtime to depart the borders. She stepped up to the counter and ordered a hot coffee for herself and an iced tea for Jess.
When the barista handed over the drinks, Tessa pulled out her own personal money to pay. It was a simple exchange of cash, but the weight of the moment settled deep in her bones. This was her very first sweet taste of a new, free life outside the pack's strict financial structure. She took a slow sip of the steaming coffee. The rich, bitter flavor washed over her tongue. It tasted better than any cup she had ever consumed within these borders.
They enjoyed their drinks, soaking in the late morning sun and the ambient noise of the town. When the cups were empty, they turned around and began the slow stroll back to the parking lot. The time had come for her final goodbyes.
As they approached the parked Mercedes, Jess's hand suddenly shot out, gripping Tessa's arm like a vise. Her fingernails dug through Tessa's jacket, biting fiercely into the flesh beneath.
Jess gasped, her eyes going wide with blinding agony. Her knees buckled as a fierce, massive contraction hit her body with zero warning. A loud splash followed. Her amniotic water broke, soaking her pants and splashing right onto the pavement next to the car tires.
"Oh Goddess," Jess whimpered, clutching her swollen belly, her face twisting in pain. "It hurts. It's happening right now."
Tessa didn't flinch. She shifted instantly into doctor mode, her posture straightening as medical adrenaline flooded her veins. She looped her arm securely around Jess's waist, holding her heavy frame steady.
"That desperate to have me deliver your little girl?" Tessa teased her playfully, keeping her tone light to mask the sudden urgency. "Cheeky woman, tricking me into staying until you went into labor by making me go get coffee. Come on, to the pack hospital with you. I’ll stay and deliver your little girl."
Jess groaned through another brutal spike of pain, barely able to stand. "I really didn't mean to. But... thank you."
In the dark back of her mind, a low rumble vibrated against Tessa's consciousness. Her wolf, Vala, paced in the shadows. She snorted, sending a grave, serious warning through their mental link.
*She needs you, or she and that pup will not make it.*
Tessa frowned, guiding Jess step-by-step toward the medical wing just down the street. *You don't know that for sure.* The mere thought of losing both a mother and a pup made her stomach turn.
*Yes, I do,* Vala stated matter-of-factly. Her ancient tone left no room for argument or doubt.
*Well, let's not see that happen then,* Tessa silently shot back to her beast. She refused to lose a mother or child on her watch. Not today. Not ever. *Get ready to use that Luna's Calm.*
*I am always ready. Use that caffeine hit from the coffee. You are the one running on two hours of sleep,* Vala retorted.
It was true. Between the packing, the legal paperwork, and the crushing heartbreak of the severed bond, Tessa had managed a meager two hours of rest over the last four days. Vala had slept to conserve strength, but Tessa was physically exhausted.
Yet, in this critical moment, the exhaustion vanished. A profound, energizing sense of purpose washed over Tessa, sharpening her focus and driving the fatigue from her bones. She always found the strength when a mother and pup were on the line.
Delivering one last pup and keeping its mother safely alive would be her final, definitive duty to the Obsidian Moon pack. It wouldn't be a quiet slip out the back door in the shadows. It would be a fitting, beautiful end to her time here. Saving lives, bringing new ones into the world, and doing exactly what she and Vala were destined for.
"Keep breathing, Jess," Tessa commanded, her voice steady and echoing with the soothing resonance of her Luna's Calm. "I've got you. We are going to bring this pup into the world together."
She adjusted her grip on the laboring mother, leaning into the challenge ahead, and marched toward the hospital doors.
