Severed Bonds

Genevieve

Stepping back into the bustling packhouse, the contrast between the quiet, sterile isolation of the hospital and the chaotic energy of the main building hit Tessa instantly. The air was thick with the mingled scents of dozens of wolves, roasted meats from the kitchens, and the sharp tang of fresh pine carried in on heavy boots. Warriors rushed past her, carrying patrol files, while lower-ranking members shouted orders across the grand foyer. Through the throngs of moving bodies, she immediately spotted Maddox. He stood at the far end of the hallway, his imposing frame dominating the space, locked in deep conversation with Beta Vaughn.

Seeing him there, barking harsh orders and managing the vast territory, reminded her of his relentless, obsessive work ethic. Maddox lived and breathed his Alpha duties with a machine-like precision. He woke long before dawn, pushing his warriors through grueling combat drills until their bones ached. He ran the border patrols himself, managed the endless logistical paperwork until late at night, and then he would either retreat to his empty bedroom or summon her to his bed to have sex. That was his routine. She had never once witnessed him taking a moment to just sit back, relax, or joke around with his elite unit. He was driven by a dark, consuming duty, running on a fuel that kept him isolated even when surrounded by his own people.

Watching him function with such cold efficiency brought unbidden memories bubbling to the surface of her mind. Her own childhood had been the stark opposite of the idyllic, loving family life most pups experienced in their packs. Growing up, she had been shoved to the cold edges of her own home, treated like an unwanted ghost. She vividly remembered standing in the shadows of the long corridors, watching her father laugh and roughhouse with his legitimate children in the sunlit courtyard. She watched him scoop her half-siblings up, spin them around in the air, and praise their every small accomplishment with bright, shining eyes.

But whenever his gaze slid past them and landed on Tessa, the warmth vanished instantly. His eyes would harden into chips of ice, his mouth pulling into a sneer of clear, vocal disdain. He despised her. He made sure she knew it every single day, telling her she was a burden, a stain on his proud Alpha lineage. To survive the agonizing, daily pain of watching her own flesh and blood shower affection on everyone but her, Tessa had learned a crucial survival skill early on. She built a heavy, iron mental switch in her mind. Whenever the crushing weight of that ultimate rejection threatened to drown her, she reached deep into the recesses of her psyche and flipped that switch. She shut off her emotions, pulling a thick blanket of numbness over her heart, rendering herself immune to the sting of being unloved. Her clinical detachment was the only way she had survived her entire life.

Her clinical musings shattered when Maddox suddenly shifted his stance. Across the wide expanse of the crowded hallway, his dark, piercing eyes cut through the space and locked directly onto hers.

The physical change in the Alpha was instantaneous. His strong jaw tightened so hard a thick muscle ticked frantically under his tanned skin. His broad shoulders went rigid, the muscles bunching under his shirt. Without uttering a single word of farewell to his Beta, Maddox abruptly pivoted on his heel and stalked away down the corridor. He moved with aggressive, predatory strides, radiating a dark, suffocating anger that rolled off him in physical, heavy waves. It was potent enough that nearby pack members instinctively pressed themselves against the walls to avoid his path.

Tessa watched his retreating back, processing his visceral reaction through a lens of cold logic. The anger made perfect sense to her pragmatic mind. She was a lingering problem. Her continued presence in his home was a stubborn obstacle. She deduced he undoubtedly wanted her gone immediately so he could finally have sex with and claim his Goddess-Gifted mate, Vivienne.

Though Tessa had already explicitly granted him verbal permission to bypass the strict Mating alliance rules and bite Vivienne before her official departure, she noted the undeniable physical proof of his restraint. Before he turned away, she had clearly seen his neck. There was no fresh mating filigree marking his skin. The intricate, dark, bruised veins that always appeared when an Alpha marked his true mate were absent.

Assuming Maddox’s foul, suffocating mood was simply the result of intense sexual impatience, she let the encounter slide off her shoulders without a second thought. She approached Vaughn calmly, her footsteps light against the polished stone floor.

"I am sorting this out as quickly as possible, Vaughn," Tessa stated, her voice steady, even, and detached. She gestured back toward the direction of her packed boxes in her old room. "You, yourself, know this. Please tell him that. I am not holding anything up. I will leave as quickly as I can."

Far down the corridor, echoing through the sprawling packhouse, a heavy wooden door slammed shut with a concussive bang. The sudden noise reverberated through the floorboards, a clear testament to the Alpha's raging temper.

Vaughn sighed deeply, dragging a rough, calloused hand down his tired face. The Beta looked physically exhausted, carrying the heavy burden of his Alpha's turbulent, shifting moods. "I will be the one exclusively handling the separation agreement today, Tessa," he explained, his tone thick with resignation. "Not Maddox. He is... unhappy with things at the moment."

Tessa offered no reply. There was nothing left to say on the matter.

Vaughn turned heavily and motioned for her to follow him. He led her down the private executive corridor and pushed open the thick double doors to the Alpha’s sprawling office. The massive room smelled intensely of cedar, old paper, and Maddox's dominant pheromones. It was a space designed solely for intimidation and power, lined with dark, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and anchored by a massive, hand-carved mahogany desk.

Vaughn walked her past the standard visitor chairs and gently but firmly nudged her around the edge of the desk. He guided her right into Maddox's own massive leather chair.

Tessa stiffened instinctively as she sank into the plush, worn leather. The seat retained the faint warmth and heavy scent of the Alpha. This was a place of supreme power. It was a seat she felt she did not belong in, yet Vaughn insisted, pulling up a secondary, smaller chair for himself so he could easily access the computer keyboard.

He began preparing the final, legally binding separation documents, his fingers flying across the keys before he hit print. He slid the crisp white papers across the dark wood toward her.

"I need your pack phone, Tessa," Vaughn requested quietly, holding out his hand.

Tessa reached into her pocket, pulled out the sleek black device, and formally surrendered it to him. She placed it squarely in his broad palm.

Vaughn unlocked the screen, intending to wipe the data and reset the device, but he paused. He tapped into the photo gallery to ensure no sensitive pack information was left behind. As he scrolled, his thick eyebrows drew together in a deep, puzzled frown. He swiped again, then again, his expression morphing into total bewilderment.

"What is it?" Tessa asked, watching his confusion mount.

"There are no personal photos on here," Vaughn said, turning the device and holding the glowing screen up for her to see. "It is just pictures of hospital charts, medical supply manifests, and official Luna duty schedules. That is odd, Tessa. Normal people take pictures of their lives. For keepsakes. To remember good days. You have zero personal memories saved on this device."

"Why would I?" she stated matter-of-factly, crossing her arms securely over her chest. "I wouldn't have anyone to send them to anyway. There is no need for personal photos."

Vaughn lowered the phone slowly, staring at her as if she had just spoken in a forgotten language. "Your father? Your grandmother? You never take pictures to send to your family to keep in touch?"

Tessa sighed heavily. A deep, tired exhale escaped her lips, rustling the silence of the office. She stared at the Beta, marveling at his profound lack of understanding regarding the bleak reality of her trauma. He had been there on the day she arrived at this pack. He should have known better.

"Father sold me to Maddox," Tessa explained, her voice devoid of any warmth, sorrow, or hesitation. It was a simple, clinical recitation of facts. "The Luna told me never to return to their territory ever again. And my father severed his kin bond with me a week later."

Vaughn froze, his breathing hitching in his chest. His eyes widened in horror.

Tessa continued, unaffected by his visible shock. "My grandmother died a few years back. She was the only one who cared, and I felt the bond snap when she passed. It is just me now, seeing as my mother died in childbirth."

She remembered the exact moment her father had severed the kin bond. She had been sitting alone in her room in this very packhouse. A sudden, sharp tearing sensation had ripped through her chest, a phantom blade mercilessly severing the ethereal, magical thread that tied her soul to her bloodline. She had expected her father's ultimate rejection her entire life. So, when the bond physically snapped all those years ago, she had simply blinked, absorbed the sharp, agonizing ache in her ribs, and moved on with her day. It was just another undeniable proof that she was unwanted, a brutal truth she had accepted long before he formally executed it.

"Tessa," Vaughn gasped, his voice cracking under the weight of her words. He looked horrified, his face rapidly draining of color. He leaned forward, gently reaching out across the massive desk to touch her arm. His fingers brushed her sleeve in a desperate, pleading gesture of comfort. "Why didn't you say anything to anyone? Why did you keep all of that terrible isolation to yourself?"

Tessa looked down at his hand resting on her arm, then back up to his wet eyes, finding his sudden pity useless. She pulled her arm back subtly, breaking the contact. "There was nothing to say."

Vaughn shook his head slowly, staring at her with wide, devastated eyes. The silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating, before Vaughn leaned in closer. When he spoke again, his voice dropped into a low, shocking, desperate suggestion.

"If you want to stay here, Tessa... Maddox would like that."

Tessa raised a skeptical eyebrow. Her mind instantly recalled Maddox's murderous, dark glare in the hallway just minutes ago. The clenching jaw, the dark fury rolling off his broad frame, the heavy door slamming in the distance. Nothing about his demeanor suggested he wanted her to stay.

"And just how do you think his new Luna will feel about that?" Tessa retorted sharply, her tone clipping the heavy air like cold steel. "It is not at all appropriate for me to remain here."

Vaughn opened his mouth to argue, but Tessa cut him off, clinically reminding the Beta of the undeniable facts of their arrangement.

"I was chosen merely to be rejected, Vaughn. That was the core of the agreement. The ironclad alliance dictates I must leave within twenty-four hours of the rejection taking place. I am leaving. That is the rule." She leaned back in the Alpha's massive leather chair, looking at him with genuine, calculating confusion. "What I do not understand is why he is dragging this out. Why hasn't Maddox bedded his new mate yet to ease his own suffering? He needs the physical release. I know how he operates. It has been days."

Vaughn withdrew his hand from the desk, his broad posture slumping in defeat. He looked at her with a profound, aching sadness etched into his features.

"Out of respect for you still being here," Vaughn replied quietly, the heavy words hanging in the quiet office space. "Maddox will not Mark or Mate Vivienne while you are still here inside his pack. It is wrong to do so, in his eyes. He refuses to cross that line until you are officially gone."

Tessa stared at him, shaking her head. She dismissed the archaic, nonsensical sentiment. It made no logical sense to her pragmatic mind.

"I did give him permission," Tessa stated, her voice sharp with cold, impenetrable logic. "I told him he could bypass the wait. He should just go and do it. Have sex with her. Mark her. Claim her body. It would likely stop him from looking at me like he just did, with all that dark anger. His sexual frustration is pointless when the solution is right there."

She met Vaughn's gaze, expecting him to agree with her straightforward pragmatism. Instead, Vaughn just sat there, frozen. He made no move to print the next document. He offered no counterargument. He merely continued frowning at her in sad, heavy silence, baffled by the bleak isolation she wore like impenetrable armor.
