Questioning the Bond

Maddox

Maddox sat rigid at the head of the heavy oak table in the pack dining room, staring hard at his Goddess-Gifted mate. The intoxicating biological scent of cloves and cardamom drifted across the polished wood, sinking deep into his lungs. Electrical sparks of the mate bond danced across his skin just from being in her proximity, urging a wanton, primitive sexual need within his body. His instincts roared at him to drag her away and claim what fate had handed him. Yet, despite the biological pull, her blatant disregard for his world unsettled his rational mind.

*‘I don’t care about those rules,’* she had just declared.

To an Alpha who ruled a vast, multi-territory pack conglomerate, those words were a glaring warning sign. He maintained his massive empire, kept the peace across volatile borders, and prevented bloody wars by adhering to complex laws. Protocols and alliances were the foundation of his existence. Her careless, entitled attitude toward the very structures that kept his people safe was a massive threat to his stability.

Worse still, Vivienne showed zero compassion for the raw, bleeding agony he was currently enduring. Maddox had just suffered through a brutal rejection with Genevieve—his former Luna and Chosen Mate of eight years. The severing of that deep connection left a gaping, invisible wound in his chest, a throbbing physical pain that threatened to drag him to his knees. He was bleeding out emotionally, navigating the agonizing reality of a broken bond. Yet Vivienne sat across from him, consumed by her own bruised ego.

She was furious that he was already claimed by another woman when they first scented each other at the mating ball. She was Goddess-Gifted; she believed he should have been waiting, unattached and desperate for her arrival. That harsh reality had struck a massive blow to her pride, a reality her aggressive father had also questioned during the tense aftermath of the ball.

Maddox stared at the sharp lines of her face, his mind flashing back to those heavy negotiations in her father’s office. He had stood firm against the older Alpha’s loud demands for an immediate claiming. Maddox refused to blindly bind a woman to his conglomerate without testing her character. He had offered only a strict one-month trial agreement. He needed to see if Vivienne possessed the necessary qualities to treat his pack, and most importantly his vulnerable omegas, with respect.

Her father had snarled, pacing the floor of his lavish office, his pride wounded by Maddox's refusal to announce a wedding. The older man had admitted to spoiling his daughter rotten over the years. He confessed that Vivienne was used to getting whatever she wanted, whenever she demanded it, suggesting she simply needed a dominant Alpha to make her submit and fall in line. Maddox had agreed to the trial, a decision he was now bitterly regretting.

Maddox was losing his patience with the experiment. If this was her submitting, it was a spectacular failure. Vivienne’s hostility hadn't waned for a single second on the long journey back to his territory. She had spent hours snapping at him in the confined space of his vehicle, her voice shrill and demanding. She badgered him relentless, demanding to know if he loved Genevieve. When he refused to entertain her jealous interrogations, choosing instead to reprimand her tone, her anger only festered.

Now, observing her entitlement broadcasted in front of his pack members, Maddox doubted she would ever change her toxic behavior. The wolves sitting at the nearby tables paused their meals, their ears swiveling to catch the drama unfolding.

"Show me around," Vivienne stated, breaking his train of thought. She stood up from the table, smoothing down the front of her expensive dress. She stared down at him expectantly, waiting for him to heel like an obedient dog.

Maddox's gaze hardened into dark ice. The simmering irritation in his chest boiled over, eclipsing the biological pull of the bond. He did not move from his chair.

"How about you ask me nicely," Maddox warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous rumble. "I am the Alpha, Vivienne. You don’t get to make demands of me."

Vivienne scoffed, the sound sharp and disrespectful in the quiet room. She rolled her eyes, stepping toward him with a defiant jut of her chin. "I’m your mate and equal. I can tell you—" she grated out, her voice rising in volume, intent on forcing his hand.

Maddox stood. His massive frame uncoiled with frightening speed, towering over her petite form and casting a dark, dominating shadow across the table. As he surged to his feet, his heavy oak chair slammed to the hardwood floor. The sharp, explosive crack of the wood echoing through the dining room made the nearby guards flinch and grip their weapons.

He cut her off with a booming growl that vibrated through the floorboards, asserting his raw Alpha dominance.

"You are not my equal unless I claim you," Maddox declared, his voice freezing cold and echoing with heavy Alpha authority. The sheer force of his presence pushed the air out of the room, forcing Vivienne to take a stunned step back. "And so far, I’m not seeing anything in you that wants to make me claim you. You’re no different to how you were at the mating ball."

He leaned over the table, his dark eyes locking onto hers, ensuring she understood the gravity of his threat. He wasn't playing a game.

"I’ll not claim and mark you, make you my Luna to this pack if I don’t think you’ll be nice to my pack members. You might want to check your attitude."

The silence in the dining room was deafening. Vivienne stared up at him, her mouth parted in shock, the arrogant fire in her eyes momentarily dimmed by his aggressive display of dominance. But Maddox didn't wait for her retort. Unable to stomach another second of her suffocating presence, Maddox turned his broad back on his Goddess-Gifted mate and walked away, leaving her standing alone by the fallen chair.

Maddox pushed through the heavy double doors of the dining room and strode out into the wide packhouse corridors. His heavy boots thudded against the rich carpets, the sound hollow and isolated. A true mate’s presence was supposed to soothe an Alpha's pain, to wrap around their soul and offer peace. But Vivienne did the exact opposite. Her presence only amplified the throbbing ache in his chest, turning the dull throb of a severed bond into a sharp agony.

A deep, suffocating wave of regret clawed at his heart. He reached a hand up, rubbing the center of his chest as a physical tightness threatened to crush his lungs.

He had made a catastrophic mistake. If he had simply rejected his Goddess-Gifted the moment they scented each other at the ball. If he had kept his mouth shut tight, swallowed the biological urge, and walked away without ever telling a soul. If he had done that, Genevieve would still be his Luna right now.

The thought hit him with the force of a freight train. He squeezed his eyes shut, his stride faltering as a vivid, heart-wrenching vision hijacked his mind. They would be upstairs in their private suite at this very moment. He would have pushed her back onto the large, soft mattress. He would be passionately making love to the woman he actually loved. He pictured burying his face in her neck, right over his mark, driving his cock deep into her tight, wet heat and letting the familiar, steady warmth of their shared bond wash over him. He visualized the soft curves of her body flushed with heat, her breath hitching as he claimed her over and over again until the rest of the world faded away. He wanted to claim his Chosen Mate again, to hold her tight and never let her go.

He opened his eyes, the cold reality of the empty corridor snapping him back to the present. That reality was gone forever.

Genevieve was no longer his to touch. She was no longer his to command, to protect, or to have. He had accepted the rejection. He had severed the tie. And in exactly twenty-four hours, the grace period would end, and she would leave his territory for good.

A sudden wave of concern washed over his Alpha instincts, chilling his blood. Where would she go?

He stopped dead in his tracks, staring blankly at the ornate wallpaper. He didn't know where she was headed. He hadn't asked, and he had no right to demand answers anymore. He assumed she would return to her birth pack, back to her father who had orchestrated their alliance eight years ago.

But as he stood there in the quiet hallway, Maddox recalled a specific, odd clause in their original alliance document. His mind dragged the memory up from the depths of the thick stacks of paperwork he had signed years ago. He could almost see the black ink on the heavy parchment.

Upon rejection, she was mandated to find another pack. She was forbidden from ever returning home to her father's territory under any circumstances.

He frowned, his brow furrowing as the memory solidified. He hadn't questioned the weird stipulation back then. As a young Alpha, he had been focused on securing his borders, negotiating peace, and preventing a bloody war. The strange clauses regarding her eventual departure hadn't seemed important when he was just trying to stabilize his newly inherited conglomerate.

But now, the strangeness of the condition lingered dark in his mind, wrapping cold tendrils around his frantic thoughts. Why was she legally banished from her own bloodline? What kind of father negotiated a clause that permanently exiled his own daughter upon the dissolution of a political marriage? It made no logical sense. It felt deeply wrong, a hidden trap he had blindly agreed to in his youth.

The realization hit him hard, spiking his heart rate. Genevieve was being cast out, legally stripped of her title, her home, and now, he realized, her safety net. She had nowhere to return to. The dark implication of that contract clause left him with a desperate, burning need to know she would be safe out in the world alone.
