The Scent of Rejection

Genevieve

Genevieve stood before the massive walk-in closet of the Luna suite. The yellowed mating contract rested safe inside the battered canvas bag on her bed, yet the sheer volume of items left behind loomed over her. Racks of expensive garments lined the cedar-paneled walls. Row after row of tailored suits, heavy silk blouses, and formal gowns filled the expansive space. The shelves displayed pristine heels that pinched her feet, while velvet-lined drawers held delicate gloves designed to hide her hands. Her single, battered suitcase could never hope to hold everything she was entitled to take under the separation agreement. Even if she brought ten suitcases, the sheer volume of fabric would spill over.

She reached out, brushing her fingertips against the sleeve of a dark emerald dress. The rigid fabric felt like a cage. The store tag still dangled from the cuff, scraping against her skin with a sharp, papery sound. She felt no desire to pack the expensive, tag-laden dresses Maddox had provided. These garments carried a suffocating weight. They held stifling memories of forced Mating Balls, of standing stiff beside Maddox in the grand hall beneath glaring crystal chandeliers. She remembered the endless hours of playing the dutiful, silent role of his Chosen Luna, forced to dance a single opening dance with him before retreating to the shadows to watch over the pack. The clothes were heavy armor for the restrictive, performative duties she despised.

Having gained her long-awaited freedom just moments ago in his office, she refused to wear constant physical reminders of the life he dictated for her. Taking these clothes meant carrying his wealth and his rigid control into her new life. She preferred to leave it all behind.

Closing her eyes, Genevieve reached out through the pack mind-link. She pinged her personal Omega, Bethany.

*Bring me some cardboard packing supplies and heavy tape,* Genevieve projected, keeping her mental voice even and calm.

A few moments later, the heavy suite door clicked open. Bethany bustled into the room, her arms wrapped around a tall stack of collapsed cardboard boxes. The Omega moved with quick, eager steps, bringing a plastic tape dispenser resting on top of the pile.

"I brought the medium ones," Bethany said, her voice cheerful as she navigated the doorway.

Bethany turned the corner into the bedroom and stopped dead. Her gaze fell on Genevieve, who stood beside the bed, folding her meager hospital scrubs and plain cotton shirts. Bethany’s eyes darted upward, locking onto the side of Genevieve’s neck.

A loud gasp tore from the Omega’s throat. Bethany’s grip slackened. The heavy boxes slipped from her arms and hit the hardwood floor with a loud, hollow thud. The tape dispenser clattered against the baseboards.

Bethany stared in horror. She realized her Luna no longer bore the Alpha’s physical bite mark. The skin on Genevieve’s neck was bare, smooth, and unmarked. The heavy, dominant scent of Alpha Maddox—a scent that had clung to Genevieve like a shadow for years—was gone. The air around Genevieve smelled clean, carrying only her own natural scent.

"Tessa, what happened?" Bethany asked right away. She rushed forward, ignoring the dropped boxes on the floor, and reached out to touch Genevieve’s arm in a blind panic. Her fingers trembled against Genevieve’s sleeve.

Genevieve smiled gently. She took a calm step back, creating space between them, and returned to folding a worn gray sweater. "I’m certain Maddox will tell you all tomorrow. Best you hear it from your Alpha. Everything is as it should be, now."

Bethany’s mind raced. Her wide eyes scanned the meager pile of clothes, the battered canvas bag, and the bare neck. She deduced the truth. Maddox had finally executed the inevitable rejection. The whispers that floated through the lower ranks for months had become a stark reality.

"You have to leave," Bethany whispered, the realization draining the color from her face.

"I have a strict twenty-four-hour window to vacate the premises," Genevieve confirmed. She picked up a thick medical textbook from her nightstand and placed it squarely into the open suitcase. "The clock is already ticking."

Resigned and unhappy with the sudden turn of events, Bethany knelt on the floor. She grabbed a collapsed box, snapped it open, and ran a strip of thick tape across the bottom seams. She brought the cardboard box over to the desk, helping box up Genevieve's heavy medical books and diagnostic equipment. They worked in tandem, wrapping the spare stethoscopes, the blood pressure cuffs, and the boxes of sterile sutures.

The Omega’s voice laced with deep anxiety as she stacked the heavy anatomy volumes and thick pharmacology binders. "But who will safely deliver the pack's unborn pups now? The pregnant females trust you, Tessa. You know their charts. You know their histories. You are the one who sits with them during the long labors when their mates are out on patrol."

Genevieve met Bethany’s worried gaze, offering a calm, steady look. She placed her favored silver stethoscope into the center of the box. "Dr. Miriam is more than capable of handling the ward. She knows the procedures and she cares about the patients. She has shadowed me for two years. The mothers will be fine."

Genevieve pointed toward the vast walk-in closet. "Gather up the remaining designer clothes. Put them in the donation bins downstairs. Once I am gone, I need you to do a deep spring-clean of this suite. Change the sheets, wash the curtains, open the windows. Erase all traces of my scent from this room."

Bethany paused, a heavy medical dictionary hovering in her hands. She stared at Genevieve in shock. "Where are the boxes going? I need an address for the shipping labels."

Genevieve shook her head. "There is no address. I have no set destination in mind."

"You don’t even know where you’re going?" Bethany asked, her eyes wide, staring in pure disbelief. "How can you leave if you have no place to go? Can’t Maddox have the decency to send you to an affiliated pack where you’ll be safe?"

Genevieve shrugged, unbothered by the looming uncertainty of the open road. The wild unknown held more appeal than these gilded walls.

"It’s not up to him where I choose to go, Bethany. I’ll make that decision on my own. I’ll find a pack that needs a doctor and go there. I have my hands and my medical degree. That is enough."

Bethany scoffed, shaking her head. She walked into the closet and began ripping the expensive gowns and tailored suits off their velvet hangers. She bundled the heavy fabrics into her arms.

"He's making a mistake," Bethany muttered angrily under her breath. She marched toward the door, her arms full of expensive donations. "Maddox will hate seeing the lower-ranking omegas parading around the territory in the clothes he bought for his Luna. It’s going to serve him right."

Genevieve just shook her head as the door clicked shut behind the Omega. Bethany was wrong about Maddox. Maddox rarely looked at her anyway, save for when she was lying in his bed, stripped naked, wearing nothing but her mother's gold galaxy pendant resting against her collarbone.

That was the only time his eyes locked onto hers. He never cared to look into her eyes during dinner, or ask about her day in the medical ward. The raw, physical act of claiming her body in the dark was the extent of his attention. She had endured those cold nights, staring up at the ceiling, feeling the cool metal of the spinning pendant against her bare skin while he pushed into her to satisfy his Alpha needs. The moment he finished, he would turn his back, leaving her to trace the shape of the tiny stars on her necklace until dawn broke.

She reached up and touched the pendant now. The delicate gold chain felt familiar and grounding against her throat. A single star hovered above a crescent moon, housing a galaxy core that rotated on a tiny spinner. The deep, star-sparkled blue of the pendant matched the eyes of her inner wolf, Vala.

Genevieve traced the edge of the pendant, her thoughts drifting to the wolf she kept buried deep inside. Following her grandmother's strict, terrifying warning never to let anyone see Vala's unique eyes, Genevieve kept her wolf suppressed and hidden from the world. Her grandmother had been relentless, gripping Genevieve’s small shoulders and drilling the fear into her young mind. The old woman insisted that those star-sparkled blue eyes marked a rare, dangerous lineage that would bring ruin if discovered by the wrong Alpha. They were not normal wolf eyes. They were a beacon for greed and war.

Genevieve had obeyed. She built a wall of iron inside her own mind, trapping Vala in the dark. She managed to resist her own father's direct Alpha command to shift. The memory still brought a phantom ache to her bones. Her father had stood over her in his massive study, furious at her refusal. His dominant aura crashed over her, crushing the air out of her lungs, ordering her to let the wolf out and prove her worth. The pressure had been agonizing, tearing at her muscles, forcing her to her knees, and drawing the metallic taste of blood into her mouth. But she held the barrier shut. She endured the brutal punishment of his aura, refusing to break, letting him beat her down with his power rather than expose Vala.

In the end, she managed to convince him that her wolf was simply defective, trapped inside her human form. Her father believed she was a broken, useless she-wolf. He had looked at her with disgust, dismissing her from his sight forever. Maddox believed the exact same lie.

Genevieve taped the final cardboard box shut, running her thumb over the adhesive to secure it. She grabbed the heavy canvas bag holding her scrubs, her medical equipment, and the voided contract. She cast one last look around the sterile Luna suite. The large bed was impeccably made. The massive walk-in closet was empty of her lingering presence. The air already felt devoid of her scent, wiped clean by her impending departure.

Leaving the room behind, Genevieve headed downstairs. Her boots made soft, rhythmic thuds against the long carpeted runner of the Alpha's hallway. She bypassed the portraits of past Alphas lining the walls, ignoring the grand history she was no longer a part of.

In the grand foyer stood Beta Vaughn. He waited for her near the massive front doors, his hands clasped behind his back, a solemn expression etched into his rigid jaw. The morning light streamed through the tall glass windows, casting long shadows across the polished marble floor.

Genevieve walked directly toward him, her spine straight and her chin held high. In her hands, she carried her aged copy of the mating alliance document. The thick, yellowed paper felt heavy with finality. She was ready for him to void it with the pack stamp, ready for him to forever erase her existence from the Obsidian Moon pack files by the end of the day.
